This weekend Screambox celebrates Earth Day with James Nguyen‘s authentically so-bad-it’s-good Birdemic: Shock and Terror, which is easily one of the best-worst movies ever made, as well as its sequels Birdemic 2 and the festival favorite Birdemic 3: Sea Eagle, which blew the roof off last year’s Fantastic Fest.
The first Birdemic was acquired out of a hilariously legendary screening in Park City, Utah during the Sundance Film Festival by Severin Films. It’s so raw, authentic, and comically terrible that it’s infinitely rewatchable. It also boasts the acting debut of Bloody Disgusting family member Whitney Moore, who has appeared in several horror films over the years and has become a well-known host in the metal and movie community.
All three films are now streaming on our Screambox platform!

After premiering last year at Fantastic Fest, Birdemic 3: Sea Eagle, the third film in James Nguyen‘s authentic so-bad-it’s-good franchise, arrives on VOD platforms tomorrow!
In the latest from Severin Films, the birds are back, and global warming has them roiled!
“When global warming triggers climate chaos along the Northern California coast, two scientific researchers will discover tender romance, awkward dancing, overly earnest moralizing, appalling CGI, automatic weapons, and a plague of attacks by sea eagles that could lead to the extinction of life on earth. Or as one character wisely proclaims in this conclusion of Nguyen’s immortal cinematic vision, ‘We have to accept our fate. It is death.'”
Birdemic: Shock and Terror, which was somewhat of a revelation and easily one of the best bad movies ever made, was acquired out of a hilariously legendary screening in Park City, Utah during the Sundance Film Festival by Severin Films.

Every year, there are more bad movies made than anyone could ever watch in a lifetime. Between what is released directly to VOD or the many, many ultra low-budget flicks that make their way to Redbox via companies like The Asylum, it's overwhelming. But every once in a while, some of these B-movie exercises manage to break away and actually get through to people in a meaningful fashion. Such was the case with 2010's "Birdemic: Shock and Terror," director James Nguyen's ultra-low-budget creature feature that gained so-bad-it's-good cult status in the way few films can ever hope to achieve. It is probably near "The Room" in that regard.
Despite the cult status and midnight movie reputation, it seemed unlikely that it would spawn an entire franchise. And yet, here we are, in the year 2022, with "Birdemic 3: Sea Eagle" having recently premiered at Fantastic Fest, one of the premiere...

Fantastic Fest is back for its seventeenth edition featuring killer teddy bears, man-eating sharks, elderly zombies, cocktail-serving robots, and Park Chan-wook… all under one roof.
The festival will once again take over the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar in Austin, TX from September 22nd – 29th and one film taking flight will be Birdemic 3: Sea Eagle, the third film in James Nguyen‘s authentic so-bad-it’s-good franchise that will celebrate its World Premiere.
In the latest from Severin Films, the birds are back, and global warming has them roiled!
Interestingly, the press release teases that this is the “director’s cut” of his thrilling, romantic, and worthy sequel. James Nguyen will be in attendance.

Fantastic Fest will be making its long-awaited return to in-person festival events in Austin this September, and per usual, the lineup is heavy on delightfully bizarre horror films from around the world.
In addition to the impeccable selection of genre fare the festival has come to be known for, the lineup also features several Cannes favorites that are sure to be players throughout the fall festival season. Ruben Östlund’s Palme d’Or winning “Triangle of Sadness” will make its U.S. premiere, closing out the festival. The U.S. premiere of Park Chan-wook’s “Decision to Leave” is also headed to Fantastic Fest, and the director will be in attendance to accept a lifetime achievement award for his mind-bending body of work, which includes films like “Oldboy” and “The Handmaiden.”

For years, Fantastic Fest, the annual genre film festival in Austin, Texas, has been one of the best kept secrets on the festival circuit. Taking place at one theater (the Alamo Drafthouse on South Lamar), it’s an endlessly delightful cornucopia of exploding heads, talking animals and deviant sex (sometimes all in the same movie). This year’s festival features 21 world premieres, 14 North American premieres and 21 U.S. premieres, with a mixture of mainstream fare (Paramount’s new horror movie “Smile” will have its premiere at the festival) and the endearingly esoteric.
The festival will once again take over the Alamo Drafthouse from Sept. 22-29 and on the web via a virtual Ff@Home experience from Sept. 29-Oct. 4.
Among the many delights of this year’s festival include the opening night premiere of “Smile,” the U.S. premiere of Park Chan-wook’s “Decision to Leave,” with the closing night film being “Triangle of Sadness,...

Putting a camera in the hands of people whose own medium is not film, often leads to interesting final products, a passage down a road less travelled, an opportunity to experience the world through a novice’s eyes. Heck, careers have been launched and even whole cinematic movements have been birthed because of such shoe-strap filmmaking. Creators working within the confines of limited budget and experience assembling a product from scratch with nary a plan in hand tend to serve their audiences a platter of rare delights screaming for appreciation. On the flipside, Hiroshi Yamamori’s debut feature “Promise In The Palm” is a nauseatingly lifeless ordeal, an incomprehensible mess that falls flat on its face with all the grace, composure, and awkward hilarity of a Neil Breen or James Nguyen dud.

The pilot season, launched back in July with the support of Arcadia Films, The Australia Council and City of Sydney, saw Carroll Harris – a writer and regular critic for ABC Rn’s The Screen Show – commission works from 12 different artists and filmmakers.
Her brief to the creatives had no thematic limitations, rather she simply funded them to create something short and designed to be viewed on a small screen.
The motivations behind the idea were twofold. One, Carroll Harris wanted to support creatives whose work she found interesting. Two, she was keen to shake up how experimental screen art was commissioned and distributed. That is, to take it outside of traditional...

Tommy Wiseau. James Nguyen. Neil Breen. Connoisseurs of “so bad, they’re good” movies are familiar with these infamous directors, but have you heard of Stephen Groo? Continuing their strides to create and tell compelling real-life stories, Vice Media has announced the launch of Vice Documentary Films, a new division of Vice Films that will produce feature-length documentaries from both established and up-and-coming directors around the world.
Expanding on the adventurous storytelling that the company is known for, the new projects will focus on character-driven stories about rebels, radicals and people on the margins of society. The new division will be led by Jason Mojica, who previously served as Editor-in-Chief and Executive Producer of Vice News, and Brendan Fitzgerald, who helped launch the Viceland cable channel as its Head of Development.
“You hear a lot of people saying that there’s never been a better time for documentaries, and it turns out that’s true,” said Mojica, Executive Producer of Vice Documentary Films. “Audiences are more interested than ever in non-fiction storytelling and there are more and more platforms serving it up.

Holy shit! Two things I love dearly are coming together to make the constant existential crisis we laughingly refer to as "life" somewhat bearable: Rifftrax is going to be doing an exclusive riff on an unreleased film from director James Nguyen, the mastermind behind the bad movie classic Birdemic. The film is a sci-fi take on Hitchcock's Vertigo called Replica. Here's how... Read More...

The RiffTrax gang of Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy, and Bill Corbett are back again, this time taking on Replica, an as-yet-unreleased film from the writer/director of Birdemic: Shock And Terror, James Nguyen. The former Mystery Science Theater 3000 jokesters and director Ngyuen talked exclusively with The A.V. Club about Replica, intentional camp, and why filmmakers let these guys put their films through the wringer.
“There’s probably been some release for everything we’ve done,” Nelson says on the unprecedented move of taking on a film that’s never been released to the public. “We had a strong suspicion that Replica would be good. We heard from Mr. Ngyuen that, unlike his other films, this one was more of an immature vision and that made us lick our chops. ‘Wait a minute, there’s a film that’s worse than Birdemic?’”

In January 2009, software salesman James Nguyen traveled to the Sundance Film Festival to self-promote his low-budget independent horror film “Birdemic: Shock and Terror.” He handed out flyers from a beaten-up van with a stuffed bird on the antenna and covered with paper signs reading, “Bidemic.Com” (accidentally misspelled) and “Why Did The Eagles And Vultures Attacked?”
Word of mouth from horror movie websites spread around the festival and eventually the trailer was shown on G4’s “Attack of the Show.” In February of 2010, “Birdemic” had its Los Angeles premiere hosted by Tim & Eric, and it was soon picked up for distribution by Severin Films. It had a brief theatrical run in numerous cities in the United States and in Toronto, Canada from April through July.

There are films that can be called “so bad they are good” and other bad films that are funny to watch for all the wrong reasons… What camp does Birdemic: Shock and Terror sit in? That’s for you to decide. With a story similar to The Birds, Birdemic tells the story of two lovers Rod (Alan Bagh) and Nathalie (Whitney Moore) who find themselves caught in the “Birdemic” with birds of prey suddenly attacking a small seaside town.
It is hard to defend Birdemic: Shock and Terror, it just isn’t a good movie. I can see why some may champion it as being so bad its good, but it didn’t fit that category for me. This review isn’t going to be me bashing it though, because that would be unfair. Why would you consider purchasing the Blu-ray?...

When American cinemas began midnight programming in the 1970s, they typically scheduled films that were either too weird for the mainstream or so bad they really were worth watching. In those pre-internet, pre-vcr days, a midnight movie was something illicit, a chance to watch something you might never see again.
Matinee screenings might’ve featured Charlton Heston saving a stricken airliner or surviving a Los Angeles earthquake, but the night belonged to El Topo, Alejandro Jodorowsky’s weird Western, and Night Of The Living Dead, which ushered in the era of grim, downbeat horror pictures.
Decades later, despite the competition from home entertainment, the midnight movie was alive and well and playing at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, Texas, where James Nguyen’s Birdemic was revelling in its newly-acquired status as one of the worst films ever made. The movie proved so popular during its limited theatrical run that a sequel,...

What are widely considered to be the finest works of late, great Euro-cult master Jess Franco’s labyrinthine career, his 1971 erotic horrors Vampyros Lesbos and She Killed in Ecstasy have long been sought after by cult cinema collectors. Now, for the first time ever in the UK, the fully restored, uncensored versions of both films will be available in Special Editions from Severin Films.
Both films star the bewitching beauty Soledad Miranda, who was tragically killed before either film was released, and achieved additional cult status thanks to the sexadelic, ultra groovy soundtrack that became an unexpected dance floor hit three decades after original release.
Vampyros Lesbos has already had successful and acclaimed theatrical screenings in the UK ahead of these releases, and the time is set for the extraordinary work of the mercurial Franco to reach out to a brand new audience. Featuring newly created cover art by Wes Benscoter,...

I adore bad movies. I own Foodfight! on DVD. I’ve made countless friends furious when I forced them to sit through Manos: the Hands of Fate. I own a VHS player partly so I can watch my copy of Miami Connection. Terrifyingly personal psycho-drama turned black comedy The Room, no-budget bigfoot horror Night of the Demon, the many sordid works of Neil Breen, real estate agent by day, least charismatic person to ever act by night- these are movies that I enjoy, truly, and, strange as it may seem, they mean something to me. When I tell people that Birdemic is one of my favorite films ever, I mean it in every way, with no ironic distance. As silly as they are, as strange as the cult of bad movie watchers is, these things are more than just trainwrecks to be watched with a sense of sadistic joy; they’re odd,...

With the popularity of films like The Room, Birdemic: Shock and Terror, and Sharknado (now with a 2 behind it!), it seems that some people tend to like bad movies more than they like good ones. However, long before Tommy Wiseau or James Nguyen were directing films, and before Tara Reid was even born, there was a magical man named Edward D. Wood, Jr. Even with his terrible sense of plot, sequence and cinematic structure, Ed Wood managed to give his own flavor to his films, culminating in the granddaddy of all bad movies: Plan 9 From Outer Space. In 1994, Tim Burton directed Ed Wood, telling the story of the infamous director and how his friendship with horror movie legend Bela Lugosi helped breathe some life into both of their careers. The 2004 DVD release of the film includes a commentary with Burton, edited together with his filmmaking cohorts, which delivers a comprehensive look at the film’s creation...

I am reminded of growing up in the late-80s, watching Unsolved Mysteries on prime-time television. Intrigued by commercials for Time Life’s Mysteries of the Unknown, an encyclopedic series of books about everything supernatural, extraterrestrial and any other unproven or unexplained phenomena, I recall begging my parents to buy me the books about alien abductions, Stonehenge, and mythical creatures that live in our backyards. Sadly, they never did, but I did manage to find the random torn and battered volume available at the local library.

Writer Lee Gambin calls them Natural Horror films, other writers call them Revenge of Nature or Nature Run Amok films and writer Charles Derry considers them a type of Apocalyptic Cinema.
Of course we’re speaking of one of the great horror subgenres for which we’ll employ writer Kim Newman’s tag: The Revolt of Nature.
Since the end of the 1990s, lovers of animal attack films have been subjected to copious amounts of uninspired Nu Image, Syfy Channel and Syfy Channel-like dreck like Silent Predators (1999), Maneater (2007) Croc (2007), Grizzly Rage (2007) and a stunning amount of terrible shark attack films to name a few that barely scratch the surface of a massive list.
These movies fail miserably to capture the intensity of the unforgettable films they are imitating and the recent wave seems to carry with it the intent of giving the Revolt of Nature horror film a bad name.

Birdemic, described by director James Nguyen as a romantic thriller, is a story about a young couple falling in love against the backdrop of a batshit insane tale of a town under siege by homicidal eagles! Inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds (in fact The Birds actress Tippi Hedren makes a cameo in the film in stock footage), the film also tackles topical issues such as global warming and world peace, all wrapped up in a film so inept that you’ll leave the film with the hugest grin on your face. We’ve all heard the phrase “so bad it’s good”, well Birdemic is the epitomy of that phrase!
Where to begin reviewing a film like Birdemic? It’s script? Garbage. It’s actors? Terrible, however the blonde female lead (Whitney Moore) is nice to look...

The 7th annual Sydney Underground Film Festival, which runs this year on September 5-8 at the Factory Theatre, opens with a real bang when they will screen cult filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky’s latest cinematic odyssey, The Dance of Reality. This is Jodorowsky’s first film in over twenty years and is an imaginative and playful quasi-autobiography.
The rest of the four-day celebration is packed with more film oddities and excursions into surreal and transgressive territory. One particular highlight that is not to be missed is Don Swaynos’ incredibly crowd-pleasing comedy Pictures of Superheroes, about a slacker cleaning woman’s descent into an absurd world she can’t escape. Read the Underground Film Journal’s review of Pictures of Superheroes here.
Other twisted fiction films screening include Drew Tobias’s sick and twisted See You Next Tuesday, Cody Calahan’s apocalyptic Antisocial and Lloyd Kaufman’s highly-anticipated sequel Return to Nuke ‘Em High: Vol.

In a week in which Sharknado was a thing, you might well think that humanity’s artistic expression had reached its zenith.
Having climbed so high, breathed the sweet serene of such wonder, you may fear that there are no more dreams to pursue, no more untrammelled caverns of the imagination left to explore. Sure, Shakespeare might have blathered on about morality and mortality and love and stuff, and Picasso may have deconstructed the very ways in which we perceive our world, but Beverly Hill 90210′s Ian Ziering blasted Sharks out of the sky with a gun and (spoiler alert) chainsawed his way through one (with a chainsaw!) straight into the pantheon of awesome.
And you know what? Maybe we did fly too close to the sun on this one, people. Because once the chocolate of sharks was mixed with the peanut butter of tornado there was no going back...

But, the big highlight of the fest will be a special workprint preview screening of Troma daddy Lloyd Kaufman’s latest epic of grotesqueness and debauchery: Return to Nuke ‘Em High Vol. 1, the fourth trilogy-busting entry in the classic Nuke ‘Em High series. This will screen on the 13th at 8:00 p.m. and will be preceded by a Q&A with the always entertaining Kaufman himself.
Other features include Quentin Dupiex’s 2nd flick, the missing dog comedy Wrong; angry birds of prey return to terrorize L.A. in James Nguyen’s Birdemic 2; werewolf soldiers invade NYC in Battledogs; a...

Have you seen the movie Birdemic: Shock and Terror? Well, it's gloriously awful, and unless you enjoy watching movies that are so bad they're good, it's hard to recommend. The script, story, acting, and special effects are all just utterly terrible, but the movie has managed to gain a cult following, and director James Nguyen is back with a laughably bad sequel called Birdemic 2: The Resurrection.
A platoon of eagles and vultures attack Hollywood, California. Why did the eagles and vultures attack? Who will survive?
If you've got 3 minutes to kill you can see for yourself how ridiculously bad this movie looks.

Director James Nguyen’s “Birdemic 2: The Resurrection” is either the dumbest movie ever made or a calculated slice of comedy gold. I honestly can’t figure it out. Regardless, the “visionary” filmmaker’s follow-up appears to be “Birdemic” on steroids. Instead of one goofy couple, you get two. In addition to killer birds, you get zombies. And that’s fine by me. The more the merrier. Now bring on the Blu-ray, already! I’m impatient! Check out this synopsis: A flock of eagles and vultures wreak havoc amidst blossoming romance in Hollywood, California, leaving bloodshed and destruction wherever they hover. The story features original ‘Birdemic’ survivors Rod and Nathalie, who are joined by new friends – struggling filmmaker Bill, aspiring actress Gloria and several other Angelenos they encounter as they battle angry birds and a host of new enemies. “Birdemic 2: The Resurrection” stars Whitney Moore, Alan Bagh, Patsy van Ettinger,...

Director James Nguyen’s “Birdemic 2: The Resurrection” is headed to Los Angeles later this month. In order to prepare everyone and their wily grandparents for the film’s debut, the director and his promotional team have unleashed the colorfully over-the-top poster you see below. Please try to contain your excitement to mild shrieks. For those who are unfamiliar with the original outing, “Birdemic” explores the relationship between two good-looking West Coast types as they contend with the invasion of blood-thirsty birds. Why are these feathered creatures attacking everyone? Honestly, I can’t remember. But the film is an absolute blast, particularly if you’re of the belief that “The Room” is one of the greatest cinematic endeavors of our time. Bad taste is an absolute must. Here’s what the sequel is all about: Bill is a struggling filmmaker; Gloria is an aspiring actress. Rod, a Silicon Valley millionaire finances Bill’s film,...

Birdemic: Shock and Terror
Written by James Nguyen
Directed by James Nguyen
USA, 2008
You have to respect an artist with a vision. Sometimes they make Dances With Wolves or The Passion of the Christ and are rewarded critically and commercially for their risky works of passion. Other times you get James Nguyen’s notorious 2008 film Birdemic. The film is an homage to Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds and Al Gore’s Oscar winning documentary An Inconvenient Truth. Shot largely on weekends and funded completely by Nguyen’s day job as a software salesman in Silicon Valley, the film is actually quite magical for bad movie fans due to the tonal shift midway through. It’s kind of like two awesomely bad movies for the price of one!

Films as bad as Birdemic: Shock and Terror aren't supposed to get sequels, but if James Nguyen can keep the acting poor, the sound abysmal and the humour intact, it'll be another classic
Made on a reported budget of $10,000 (£6,385), Birdemic: Shock and Terror quickly vaulted into the highest echelons of the best worst films ever made upon its 2010 release. Thanks to Birdemic's trailer – largely comprised of a scene where several almost-actors listlessly flap their arms at a handful of stock-still Commodore 64 maybe-eagles – the film immediately joined the likes of The Room and Sharktopus; films best watched drunk at 3am when your brain has lost the power to process competency.
And thanks to all this notoriety, there's going to be a Birdemic sequel. According to Dreadcentral, Birdemic 2: The Resurrection will be released in June, with screenings all over the world. This is uncharted territory. Films as bad as Birdemic aren't supposed to get sequels.

2010’s Birdemic: Shock and Terror currently stands tall with an impressive 1.9 on IMDb, and despite critics largely panning it as one of the worst films they’ve ever seen – and, in some cases, the best worst film of the year – writer-director James Nguyen is back for more.

James Nguyen's Birdemic: Shock and Terror is one of those "so bad it's good" movies that has built up a reputation over the past couple of years through screenings and word of mouth. Praised for its inept direction, atrocious special effects and terrible acting, the movie was Nguyen's attempt to pay tribute to Hitchcock's The Birds. The resulting film has been mentioned in the same breath as such cult classics as Troll 2 and The Room, and Tim and Eric even took a liking to it and helped promote it as well. Two years later, a sequel is imminent... but does it matter that James Nguyen is now in on the joke? Birdemic II: The Resurrection finds many of the same cast members returning to deal with another eagle and vulture attack... this time in Hollywood, California. The first teaser trailer has premiered online over at Yahoo! of all places,...

Stop what you're doing. Drop everything. Call your parents. Consult a medium if they're no longer with us. It's time to get clicking because Birdemic II: The Resurrection, the sequel to Birdemic: Shock and Terror (review here), now has a website.
Alan Bagh and Whitney Moore have officially signed on to reprise their characters along with many other familiar characters from Half Boon Bay that are set to return. While showing off his mastery of the romantic thriller, director James Nguyen will be introducing two new characters as well, and while we can't drop the plot bombshell we learned of on you guys just yet, we can tell you that Nguyen has raised the stakes this time; and you, my fellow sickos, are in for one hell of a crazed and very romantic experience. Birdemic II: The Resurrection is now in post-production, and you can check out the first cast...

It might've been a fever dream, but then, fever dreams tend to make more sense. I'd heard the legend of Birdemic: Shock and Terror -- a film allegedly so bad that it has rapidly become a contender for the worst film ever made -- but not until I sat down for a viewing did I realize how profoundly I would be transformed. Directed by the self-proclaimed "Master of the Romantic Thriller(Tm)", James Nguyen, the film tells the tale of two lovers (Alan Bagh and Whitney Moore) whose small, Northern California town becomes a front line in the ecological war when a flock of environmentally-conscious (not to mention surprisingly volatile) eagles and vultures decide to vent their fury with explosive, kamikaze attacks and acid-laced spit (or possibly poop -- it's hard to tell). Clearly a labor of love for its creator, who cites Hitchcock's The Birds as inspiration (and who...

Our friend and cohort Elric from "Inside Horror" was lucky enough to catch up with director James Nguyen on the final day of shooting for his upcoming film Birdemic 2: The Resurrection 3D. Check out the video interview here!
Nguyen dishes on how the sequel differs from the original but is careful not to give away too many secrets. In Birdemic 2 a platoon of eagles and vultures attack Hollywood, California. Why did the eagles and vultures attack? Who will survive? What will be left of them. How long will it take to scrape all the bird poop off your windshield?!
You can check out more at the Birdemic 2: The Resurrection 3D website and at the Birdemic 2: The Resurrection 3D Facebook page. Check out the interview with Nguyen right below.
