In some ways, the Lassie films are like the canine answer to the James Bond series. Both have literary antecedents, both have been big screen successes for MGM, and the basic formula remains essentially the same: a hero saves the day. The equivalent of Sean Connery is probably Pal, the rough collie dog who portrayed Lassie in seven feature films in the 1940s and 1950s. In Lassie: A New Adventure, Lassie is played by Bandit, who brings what is needed to the role, in a slick, handsome, functional way that suggests the Lassie franchise is perhaps in its Pierce Brosnan era, though unfortunately more Die Another Day doldrums than GoldenEye high point.

Global Screen has closed further presales for “Lassie — A New Adventure,” the sequel featuring the most famous dog in the history of cinema.
The film, directed by Hanno Olderdissen, has sold to A Contracorriente for Spain; Ads Service for Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Moldavia; Turkey’s Bir Film; Gpi for the Baltic states; Bulgaria’s Pro Films; Karantanija for ex-Yugoslavia; and Greece’s Zinos Panagiotidis. Poland and Benelux are in negotiation.

German film and TV company Telepool, jointly owned by Hollywood actor-producer Will Smith and Swiss investor Elysian Fields, is moving forward in multiple areas of the entertainment business, CEO André Druskeit tells Variety. Druskeit reveals a major new acquisition for its German distribution arm, and Julia Weber, head of theatrical sales and acquisitions at Telepool’s world sales arm Global Screen, speaks about the films making their market premieres at this month’s European Film Market in Berlin.
Last year Telepool launched into theatrical distribution in Germany, and continues this year with titles such as “Ironbark,” starring Benedict Cumberbatch. Berlin -- Hanno Olderdissen went straight to the top of German producers' must-call list Tuesday, as he won two trophies at the First Step Awards, Germany's top honor for first-time directors.
Olderdissen won for both best commercial spot and best short film for the drama "Robin."
Brigitte Bertele and Johanna Stuttmann won best feature-length film for "Nacht vor Augen," about German soldiers in Afghanistan, while Niko Apel took the documentary prize for "Sonbol," his portrait of a young Iranian dentist.
