There had been great anticipation among One Piece fans over the casting of Smoker who was introduced in the final minutes of the Season 1 finale as a teaser for what is to come in Season 2. While the character’s face was not revealed at the time, there were major clues, including Smoker’s characteristic naval uniform and the two cigars the man was smoking at the same time.

Netflix’s runaway hit series One Piece sets sail for the anticipated season 2. The manga adaptation became such a success that Halloween star Jamie Lee Curtis, who is a vet of the film industry, has been lobbying for a role in the next season as the character Doctor Kureha. Curtis, who recently started production on Freaky Friday 2, had taken to her social media with photoshopped images of her in the role, which even got the attention of the show’s official accounts.

While fans wait for that announcement, Variety has reported on the casting of several villains in the upcoming season. Daniel Lasker, known from Raised by Wolves, has been cast to play Mr. 9, Batwoman’s Camrus Johnson will be added to season 2 as Mr. 5, Jazzara Jaslyn, who can be seen in Warrior, will be playing Miss Valentine and Late Night With the Devil star David Dastmalchian will be portraying the role of Mr.

Netflix has found its Baroque Works agents for the upcoming second season of the live-action adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s best-selling manga — four villains who are key members of the criminal syndicate.

David Dastmalchian (Oppenheimer) is Mr. 3, Jazzara Jaslyn (Warrior) is Miss Valentine, Camrus Johnson (Batwoman) plays Mr. 5 and Daniel Lasker (Raised By Wolves) is Mr. 9. The four characters come directly from Oda’s pirate adventure manga.

During the Paris Fan Festival, Taz Skylar, the actor cast to portray Sanji in Netflix’s One Piece Live-Action series, opened up about the initial wave of negative comments he faced on social media following the casting announcement.

During the festival’s Q/A session, Taz recounted his very first exposure to criticism and it was around the time when the One Piece casting news came out. He revealed that his friends informed him that his name was trending on Twitter alongside references to his resemblance to rapper Eminem.

“The best way to get me to do something is tell me I can’t do it,” Skylar stated, revealing that rather than being deterred by the negative feedback, he found motivation in the challenge. “I remember I laughed because I was like, you know what, they have a point. I do kind of look a little bit like Em,” he added.

Netflix’s highly anticipated live-action adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece manga is set to return for its second season in 2025, with co-executive producer Joe Tracz joining the creative team. Netflix made the announcement on social media on Thursday, exactly two weeks after the series debuted on the streaming service.

Based on the popular manga and anime series of the same name, “One Piece” follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy, a young pirate who searches the Blue Sea for the mythical One Piece treasure. If he can do it, he will become King of the Pirates.

Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s long-running manga series One Piece launched last week and seems to have been a big success. Fans are eager for more, and producers told Variety that scripts for One Piece season 2 are already complete.

“We’ve got scripts ready,” said Marty Adelstein, CEO of Tomorrow Studios, which produces the series. “Ever since I was a kid, the sea’s been calling, so I’m setting out to follow my dreams — I’m going to be King of the Pirates!” Monkey D. Luffy says in the first footage from Netflix’s live-action One Piece adaptation, released Saturday during the streamer’s annual Tudum fan event.

To sweeten the pot, Netflix also revealed that the first season of One Piece will (finally!) premiere on Thursday, Aug. 31.

“One Piece” is a live-action take on the beloved Japanese manga of the same name. The eight-episode series stars Iñaki Godoy as Monkey D. Luffy, Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro, Emily Rudd as Nami, Jacob Romero Gibson as Usopp and Taz Skylar as Sanji. The first look was revealed at Netflix’s Tudum 2023 event in Brazil. It will release on Netflix on Aug. 31.

The show tells the story of Luffy, a young man on his way to become pirate king alongside a crew of friends who help him on his hunt for treasure.

Based on the manga title by Eiichiro Oda, One Piece will follow the other-worldly adventures of Monkey D. Luffy and his pirate crew as they explore exotic islands and endless oceans in search for the ultimate treasure “One Piece” to become the next Pirate King.

Iñaki Godoy stars as Monkey D. Luffy, along with the Straw Hats played by Mackenyu (Roronoa Zoro), Emily Rudd (Nami), Jacob Romero Gibson (Usopp) and Taz Skylar (Sanji).

Cast also includes McKinley Belcher III, Morgan Davies, Aidan Scott, Vincent Regan, Jeff Ward, Craig Fairbrass, Langley Kirkwood, Celeste Loots, Alexander Maniatis, Ilia Isorelýs Paulino, Chioma Umeala and Steven Ward.

Steven Maeda and Matt Owens serve as writers, executive producers and showrunners. Oda, Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements also executive produce.

One Piece is produced by Tomorrow Studios and Netflix in partnership with Shueisha.

It’s been seven long years since Netflix first announced its live-action adaptation of the groundbreaking manga-turned-anime “One Piece,” and with the end almost in sight, it’s now finally going to see the light of day.

In an open letter to fans posted to Netflix’s social media accounts Thursday, “One Piece” creator Eiichiro Oda was frank about the creative challenges, and differences, that have contributed to such a long development. But, he also promised, “We’re in the final process! Right now! Of finishing all 8 episodes!”

However, despite Netflix announcing in January that the show will launch in 2023, Oda suggested that it might be just a little later than that before we see it. “They’ve promised that we won’t launch until I’m satisfied,” he wrote.
