Spoilers for "X-Men" to follow.
2024 was the first year of the relaunched "X-Men" comics line, "From The Ashes," detailing the mutants' fall back into minority status after losing their nation Krakoa.
The backbone series of "From The Ashes" are "X-Men" (primarily authored by writer Jed MacKay and artist Ryan Stegman) and "Uncanny X-Men" (written by Gail Simone and primarily drawn by David Marquez). In their latest issues, the two series are converging for the first crossover in "From The Ashes," titled "Raid on Graymalkin."
"X-Men" follows Cyclops and Magneto leading a mutant colony in Alaska, while "Uncanny X-Men" is set in Louisiana. The "Uncanny" team are mentoring young mutant runaways called "The Outliers." It's not only the Uncanny Outliers who are going back to school, because Graymalkin is a mutant prison made out of the former Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters.

Normally, we choose to spotlight the five best comic books of each week. But every so often, a week comes along that is so full of glorious titles and releases that it’s impossible to only choose five issues. This is one of those times.
Each of the comics on this list either teases a new future for someone, shows the growth of a character, features something amazing happening, or a moment simply occurs that changes everything throughout its respective universe. It’s a heck of a way to continue the final month of new comic books and there are still two weeks of new comics left.
So, let’s get right into it with the pick of the week and it’s not from Marvel or DC.

Since the 1990s, there have consistently been so many "X-Men" comic series that Marvel can publish huge crossover events focused on only the X-Teams. That includes "The Age of Apocalypse," "Messiah Complex," "X of Swords," and now, "Raid on Graymalkin."
The latter is the first crossover of the new "From the Ashes" era of "X-Men" comics, bringing together "X-Men" by Jed MacKay & Ryan Stegman and "Uncanny X-Men" by Gail Simone & David Marquez. The overall theme of "From The Ashes" is that, now that mutantkind have lost their homeland Krakoa, the X-Men are displaced around the globe.
Both comic series follow different groups of familiar mutants carving out new homes. In "X-Men," Cyclops, Magneto, Psylocke, Beast, and more have settled in Merle, Alaska. "Uncanny X-Men" follows Rogue and Gambit going to Louisiana, followed by Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Jubilee, and four...

X-Men: From the Ashes was a bold move by Marvel Comics. Putting things back to the way they were after years of prosperity for mutants wasn’t something X-Men fans looked forward to. The Krakoan Age was the first time that mutants seemed happy. Sure, there was a lot to criticize, but it was a young nation trying to figure things out. Krakoa didn’t come into its own until it was in the White Hot Room (read X-Men: Forever No. 4 and Uncanny X-Men No.700 for that story).
So what do you do if you’re Marvel Comics? You get an epic creative team that reminds comic book readers that nothing stops Marvel’s Mightiest Mutants. That team is historically phenomenal writer Gail Simone (Batgirl and Deadpool) and brilliant artist David Marquez (Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man and All-New X-Men) to create Uncanny X-Men. Gail Simone and David Marquez's run on "Uncanny X-Men" has been a mix of the old and new. The core cast is five familiar X-Men: Rogue, Gambit, Wolverine, Nightcrawler, and Jubilee.
After the fall of mutant homeland Krakoa earlier this year, the five have regrouped in Gambit's home state of Louisiana. Unsure what purpose the X-Men even have anymore, Rogue has taken on a leadership role. In fact, she has to, because four young mutants recently showed up on the X-Men's doorstep. The "Outliers" are on the run from a terrifying new villain called the Hag. Flashbacks have shown that the Hag has some history with Professor X, but her existence is news to Xavier's students and readers. The result has been an X-Men story with flourishes of Southern Gothic horror.
Marvel has shared an exclusive preview of "Uncanny X-Men" #5 with /Film. This will wrap up Simone and Marquez's first story arc,...

Marvel's X-Men relaunch, "From The Ashes," has definitely felt like playing the hits next to the X-Men's previous, revolutionary Krakoa era. Still, some of those hits have a very nice sound. One of them is "Uncanny X-Men" by writer Gail Simone and artist David Marquez.
"Uncanny X-Men" is set in Louisiana and true to its setting is a Marvel comic with a twinge of Southern Gothic. Simone picked the perfect X-Men cast for her superheroes-as-people style (especially her decision to anchor the series around the headstrong and sassy Rogue) and for Marquez's lovely art. But not all is well in the Bayou.
Issue #3 of "Uncanny X-Men" ended with Wolverine about to face a new dangerous villain — the Hag — alone, and Rogue sensing Logan was in danger. Now, Marvel has shared an exclusive preview of the opening pages to "Uncanny X-Men" #4 with /Film. The preview synopsis for the issue...

The Krakoa era of "X-Men" comics saw the mutants of the world build a new homeland on a South Pacific island. The X-Men and their kind went from being feared and hunted to a global superpower, with all the security (and compromises) such a nation takes. To quote Henry Hill (Ray Liotta) in "Goodfellas" — "And now it's all over."
The Krakoan age wrapped earlier in 2024 and the relaunched X-Men line, "From The Ashes," sees mutants again divided and scattered across the globe. One of the stronger series of this new era, so far, is "Uncanny X-Men" (launched in July 2024). Written by the legendary Gail Simone and drawn by David Marquez, the book stars some vagabond ex-x-Men slumming it in Gambit's home state of Louisiana. "Uncanny" is the book most in-tune with how "X-Men" readers are feeling post-Krakoa; they had everything they dreamed of and lost it, so now what's to fight for?...

The X-Men's new era is fully underway, and starting this December, we'll get to experience an epic crossover between two of its three flagship titles in "Raid on Graymalkin."
Left broken and scattered in the wake of Krakoa, the X-Men have since regrouped into distinct teams of their own. In Jed MacKay and Ryan Stegman’s X-Men, Cyclops leads a squad of hardened mutant soldiers out of an abandoned Sentinel factory in Alaska.
Meanwhile, in Gail Simone and David Marquez’s Uncanny X-Men, Rogue attempts to build a new home with her chosen X-family along with a handful of new students down in Louisiana. Their different approaches to the X-Men’s mission erupts into a tense standoff when a plan of action is needed to take down Graymalkin Prison, formerly Xavier’s Institute.
The X-Men’s school has been transformed into a brutal penitentiary for mutants by the callous Dr.

This was one of the most balanced five comic book picks of the week. Image, Marvel, DC, and Dynamite Comics were all represented this week. Each of this week’s issues had a great story, furthered their storylines, and helped enhance their respective characters, too.
But which ones truly stood out? Let’s get right to it with the best comic book of the week.

Marvel’s mutants have just lost their best chance at unity and self-determination. They’ve been betrayed, beaten, and scattered back into the world, far from their sovereign nation of Krakoa. For oncoming Uncanny X-Men writer Gail Simone, the thing these mutants need is some sexual healing.
“I love that Rogue and Gambit are central to it because their romance is super hot,” Simone tells Den of Geek when we chat with her in an exclusive interview. In fact, she wants you to feel all kinds of things when you pick up her new X-book. “If you’re familiar with my writing at all, you know that I really am fan of the roller coaster of emotion that we can get out of these stories. You’re gonna laugh, you’re gonna cry, you’re gonna be horrified, you’re gonna feel horny, I hope. I want readers to feel these emotions throughout the story.

Marvel’s What If…? episode 1 is here, and it’s a fascinating glimpse at a version of the MCU we never expected to see. “What If…Captain Carter Were the First Avenger?” is an action-packed riff on the events of Captain America: The First Avenger, showcasing a world where Peggy Carter, not Steve Rogers, was the recipient of the super soldier serum, and took on Nazi forces and the hordes of Hydra.
Want to delve deeper into this version of the MCU? Or just looking for Marvel references you might have missed? Well, we’ve got you covered…

The new and official trailer for “the Snyder Cut” of Zack Snyder’s Justice League landed last weekend. And while it showed off a ton of new footage, including a brand new Steppenwolf design and our best looks yet at other evil denizens of Apokolips like Darkseid, Desaad, and Granny Goodness, it didn’t quite solve all the mysteries or reveal all the surprises still waiting in the new film. Fans will continue to have to wonder whether a human Green Lantern will make an appearance for a little longer, and there was no footage of Martian Manhunter.
But a new Justice League #59 variant cover from DC Comics, with art by none other than Jim Lee, seems to have given us our first full look at what J’onn J’onnz, the Martian Manhunter, will look like in the movie. Director Zack Snyder has long confirmed that Martian Manhunter was...

If you’re assembling a Justice League roster, names like Superman, Batman, Flash, Hawkgirl, and Aquaman spring immediately to mind. But what about Black Adam, Hippolyta, or new hero Naomi? When Brian Michael Bendis reunites with artist David Marquez in Justice League #59 in March, your perception of what a Justice League team can be might change.
Mr. Bendis told us what to expect about this new and unexpected Justice League.
Den of Geek: This is an interesting roster. It’s a very different kind of Justice League roster than we’ve seen in a long time.
Brian Michael Bendis: I was genuinely delighted by the reaction to the roster. I was ready for the pushback. But people seemed really into it. I think I have to thank Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson for laying the tracks for Black Adam so nicely. I thought it was going to be more of a pushback,...

DC Comics released a first look at its March comics, the first batch after the end of the multiverse-spanning Dark Nights: Death Metal and the pause-everything company wide reset Future State, and from our first glimpse of the solicitations, the big changes coming in Future State look like they might be sticking around.
With the sheer volume of change that DC underwent in the last year – new distributors, new release days, personnel changes, cancellations and FanDomes included – there was a lot of speculation about the future of the comics line. This first batch of solicitations provide an interesting answer to that speculation. It looks like, post-Future State, DC’s changing everything. By keeping some things the same.
Here are our biggest takeaways…

I know every comic book publisher loves a ‘special’ issue, an ‘anniversary’ issue, or a ‘reached a big number’ issue, but at first glance a 144 page monster book for issue 1027 of Detective Comics seems a bit of a stretch. Longevity, sure, but we just had a whole raft of anniversary specials did we not? Then you realise. Detective Comics #27, back in 1939, was not only the very first appearance of Batman, but became the title that led to National Periodicals eventually becoming DC Comics. They liked the series so much they named a company after it. So, in comic book terms, Detective Comics #27 is probably the second most important published, beaten out only by Action Comics #1. Although most of WarnerMedia's film productions are in current lockdown, the company's DC Comics continues to publish new comic book titles for August 2020, filled with fresh stories and compelling imagery:
"Dceased: Dead Planet" #2 is written by Tom Taylor and illustrated by Trevor Hairsine, Gigi Baldassini with covers by Francesco Mattina and Ben Olivier:
"...the 'Justice League' is trapped on Earth, and they've discovered that life still survives on this dead planet! Survival is precarious, though and with billions of infected still roaming the surface, death lies around every corner. But it isn't just the anti-living our heroes have to worry about, because 'John 'Constantine', 'Swamp Thing' and 'Zatanna' are about to discover another thing growing..."

I seem to be reviewing a whole lot of 80 Page Giants of late, most of which have been appearing from DC. That’s not a complaint mind you. I’m still an avid collector of the DC Dollar Comics issues from the late 1970′s and early 1980′s, so something about DC and oversized comics just feels right. Besides, there is a very good reason for this one. One of DC’s most famous characters, or franchises if you are a corporate lawyer, is celebrated his 750th issue. Not all in one continuous run of course, but in the many volumes and stop starts of recent times, Flash has crossed the exclusive line of characters with a 750 issue run. That’s something to celebrate. So how do you celebrate? You pull in writers and artists old and new. Your Geoff Johns,...

Mariko Tamaki, co-writer of critical darlings and Eisner-lauded books like This One Summer and Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up With Me, and solo writer of books that more people should be talking about, like Supergirl: Being Super, was announced as the new regular writer of Wonder Woman. “Wonder Woman was the hero I grew up with, she was my little-kid-living-room-cosplay,” she said. “I have always wanted a golden lasso and an invisible jet, and I feel like now, writing Wonder Woman, I’m one step closer.”
Joining Tamaki on the first arc is the ridiculously good Mikel Janin. Janin comes to Wonder Woman off of career-best work on Batman, and is perhaps more famously known as the artist behind that scene in Grayson where Midnighter recognized Dick Grayson through his spy tech because of his butt.
The new arc kicks off with Diana getting herself together after her battle with the Four Horsewomen,...

Joshua Williamson tells us why the Batman Who Laughs chose particular DC superheroes to turn evil.
DC's new Batman/Superman book is more than just a World's Finest team up story. Instead, it's a meditation on what makes Batman and Superman so different from each other, and a celebration of the shared values that make them heroes and friends. But it also explores the nature of heroism in the DC Universe, by exploring the very opposite of that with the villainous Batman Who Laughs, and his quest to "infect" various DC heroes with a toxin that turns them into evil versions of themselves.
Batman/Superman comes from the creative team of Joshua Williamson and David Marquez, and it's one of the most important titles in the DC line at the moment. Of course, what's the point of having evil superheroes running around if you don't have amazing visuals to go with them,...

What does The Batman Who Laughs want in Batman/Superman? And how does it fit in the larger DC Universe? We've got an exclusive first look.
Everybody knows that Batman and Superman are much more effective as teammates and friends than they are as enemies. Sure, the two most recognizable characters in the DC Universe might not have the same methods, and they certainly don't always see eye-to-eye, but they're the World's Finest team for a reason, complementing each other's many strengths and keeping each other honest.
And while DC long ago retired the "World's Finest" title, they do look for any excuse to put Clark Kent and Bruce Wayne in a book together. The latest comes in the form of Batman/Superman by Joshua Williamson and David Marquez, which will see the pair take on the creepy, nihilistic evil of the Batman Who Laughs, who has...

Batman and Superman investigate the lair of The Batman Who Laughs and find a Jokerized DC hero.
The Batman Who Laughs may be the culmination of ten years of Scott Snyder's Batman work, but the hot-selling, utterly terrifying comic that has a Jokerized, parallel dimension Batman going toe to toe with the prime Bruce Wayne is also the launching point for a new Batman/Superman team up book, and DC shared a preview of its first issue today.
The promotional materials and solicit text for the book so far have talked about the marquee pairing fighting a new "Secret Six." In the preview, we find out something shocking: it's not a gang of villains, bickering and doing espionage together, as previous versions of that team have done. No, here it's heroes infected by the Joker toxin that Batman is currently fighting off in the pages of...

Scott Snyder takes us inside the dark weirdness of The Batman Who Laughs
Want to feel old? Scott Snyder’s breakout Batman story, “The Black Mirror,” was released almost 10 years ago. He was a rising star when he got the gig on Detective Comics, and that book led to him being handed the reins on the New 52 relaunch of Batman and turned him into the character’s defining voice of the era. Snyder's time with Greg Capullo on Batman helped him redefine Bruce Wayne’s world, landed him the multiverse-reshaping Dark Nights: Metal gig and eventually saw him get to steer the entire ship of the DC Universe in the pages of Justice League.
And while he’s busy building new multiverses and starting a war across time between the Justice League and the Legion of Doom in one book, he’s also penning a culmination of sorts to his Batman stories.

Batman and Superman are on a mission to find a new Secret Six before it's too late. Here are the details on the new series from DC Comics...
Batman and Superman will join forces for a brand new comic book series debuting in August. Batman/Superman will be written by Josh Williamson, best known for his incredible run on The Flash, and drawn by Marvel veteran David Marquez (All-New X-Men). The latter has also signed an exclusive contract with DC.
At the center of the book is the evil Batman Who Laughs, a nightmare version of Batman who was Jokerized on an alternate Earth. First introduced in DC's Dark Nights: Metal crossover event by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo, the Batman Who Laughs has most recently appeared in Snyder's Justice League as well as his own Batman Who Laughs miniseries, which is actually being extended to a...

We don’t know what fate awaits the talking trash panda in this month’s Avengers: Endgame, but it seems that Rocket’s comic book career is about to hit a major snag.
Marvel Comics has announced that an upcoming arc of the Guardians of the Galaxy series will be titled “The Death of Rocket Raccoon.” When promoting comics coming up this July, the House of Ideas revealed the shocking title of the next storyline to come from Donny Cates’ recently-rebooted Guardians book.
Interestingly, Rocket hasn’t actually been featured as a member of the team in this line-up, with only Star-Lord and Groot from the movies retaining their places. However, the character does play a part in the Avengers: No Road Home bi-weekly series.

Maybe all of the recent hoopla surrounding the next Guardians of the Galaxy film being delayed and possibly retooled due to the firing of James Gunn has something to do with the books being shaken up, but I like to think there’s less pressure on Marvel Comics to have their products reflect the movies in recent years. After all, there’s a reason why we refer to the literature as “source material.”
As you may remember, the House of Ideas has spent the past few months teasing a fresh team lineup to be featured in a new ongoing series written by Donny Cates and illustrated by Geoff Shaw. And like I expected, reactions proved to be divisive because, as stated earlier, it’s not exactly reflective of what’s been enjoyed on the silver screen. But if you’re like me, you dig seeing oddball additions to super groups every now and then.

Despite Thanos currently being cock of the walk on the live action side of things, the Mad Titan hasn’t had as much luck in the comic book realm as of late. Long story short, Requiem, formerly Gamora, beheaded her father and now the universe is one purple despot lighter.
As one would expect, there’s a power vacuum of sorts being left behind, and it appears as though the House of Ideas won’t wait much longer before filling the void. In fact, the soon-to-be relaunched Guardians of the Galaxy series looks to be the book to watch if you want to keep up with this situation.
We say that because Marvel Comics have now dropped their March 2019 solicitations online, and the one corresponding to Guardians of the Galaxy #3 warns of “a new Thanos rising.” Like many of you, I’m left simultaneously intrigued and perplexed.
