They Will Be Dust is Carlos Marques-Marcet’s fourth feature film, which made its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in the Platform competition. The accomplished Spanish director assembled an impressive cast led by Ángela Molina and Alfredo Castro to tell a story that few would dare to bring to the screen.

Molina stars as Claudia, an elderly actress living with her long-time partner Flavio, played by Castro. When Claudia is diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor, she decides she does not want to endure the suffering ahead and proposes to Flavio that they end their lives together through assisted suicide in Switzerland, where it is legal. Flavio, unwilling to face life without the woman he loves, agrees to join her.

Their daughter Violeta and other children are shocked by the news. The film explores the varied emotional experiences and perspectives within the family as they confront their parents’ controversial choice.

Fathom Events and Warner Bros.’ DC Studios are blasting off documentary Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, a favorite from Sundance, and Music Box has the festival’s Grand Jury Prize-winner In The Summers among a handful of solid new release including The Featherweight about boxer Willie Pep, and Who’s Afraid Of Nathan Law? a doc following the heroic Hong Kong student activist.

DC, HBO Documentary Films and CNN Films acquired Super/Man out of the festival. It will debut in cinemas across the U.S. on Saturday with an encore presentation Sept. 25, Reeve’s birthday. Reeve’s definitive portrayal of Clark Kent/Superman over four films set the benchmark for the superhero cinematic universes that dominate cinema today. Warner is the home of Superman and the films that shot the unknown actor to stardom before a tragic horseback riding accident left him a quadriplegic dependent on a ventilator to breathe.

To suggest Alessandra Lacorazza did not make things easy for herself with her feature directorial debut “In the Summers” is something of an understatement. Not only was her screenplay broken into subsequent decades, but it required three sets of actors to play the key roles of sisters Eva and Violeta. For most independent filmmakers, winning any prize at the Sundance Film Festival on a first feature would be a dream come true. But Alessandra Lacorazza took things a step further on her directorial debut “In the Summers,” winning both the U.S. Grand Prize and the Directing Prize at the 2024 edition of the festival.

The semi-autobiographical film stars Puerto Rican rapper Residente as a divorced father who spends his summers with his two daughters in Las Cruces, New Mexico. The daughters are recast multiple times throughout the film, illustrating how they change over the years while the film remains in a single setting.

“In the Summers” earned largely positive reviews following its Sundance bow, with many critics singling out Lacorazza’s sensitive directorial touch and praising the film’s fragmented narrative structure as an effective storytelling device that allowed it to juxtapose change and consistency.

A directorial debut, “In the Summers” tells the story of two daughters navigating a turbulent but loving father during yearly visits to his home in Las Cruces, New Mexico. The Latin-American family portrait is headlined by Grammy Award-winning Puerto Rican rapper, songwriter, and actor René Pérez Joglar (known in the music industry as Residente), who plays the divorced father, while the two siblings, Violeta and Eva, are played at different ages by several rising actors, including Sasha Calle (“The Flash”) and Lío Mehiel (“Mutt”). The cast is completed by Leslie Grace (“In the Heights”) and Emma Ramos (“New Amsterdam”).

Fox’s The Cleaning Lady season three has expanded its series regular cast to include Kate del Castillo (A Cuban Girl’s Guide to Tea and Tomorrow) and Santiago Cabrera (Star Trek: Picard). The newcomers will make their debuts as siblings Ramona Sanchez and Jorge Sanchez when The Cleaning Lady returns for season three on Tuesday, March 5, 2024 at 8pm Et/Pt.

Cabrera and del Castillo join a cast that’s led by Élodie Yung as Thony De La Rosa.
