It is also now among Prime Video’s top three most-watched romantic comedies of all time, according to Amazon, which wouldn’t disclose the two other films Red, White & Royal Blue would be joining in the top three.
Amazon is also touting “a huge surge in new Prime membership signups” due to the film’s release. The company didn’t say how they determined this, though this generally measured as the title was the first one an account watched after subscribing to a streaming service.

Prime Video has debuted the trailer for the comedy ‘Red, White and Royal Blue.’
Alex Claremont-Diaz (Taylor Zakhar Perez), the son of the President of the United States (Uma Thurman), and Britain’s Prince Henry (Nicholas Galitzine) have a lot in common: Stunning good looks, undeniable charisma, international popularity … and total disdain for each other. Separated by an ocean, their long-running feud hasn’t really been an issue, until a disastrous—and very public—altercation at a royal event becomes tabloid fodder, driving a potential wedge in U.S./British relations at the worst possible time. Going into damage-control mode, their families and handlers force the two rivals into a staged “truce.” But as Alex and Henry’s icy relationship unexpectedly begins to thaw into a tentative friendship, the friction that existed between them sparks something deeper than they ever expected.

Romance is getting the royal touch in the first trailer for the long-awaited adaptation of Casey McQuiston’s book “Red, White, & Royal Blue.”
The trailer certainly makes a point of laying out the various peaks and valleys of the plot, introducing Alex Claremont-Diaz (Taylor Zakhar Perez), the son of the President of the United States (Uma Thurman) and Britain’s Prince Henry (Nicholas Galitzine). After an international incident involving a wedding cake happens the two are forced to engage in a staged friendship. But the more time they spend together the pair realizes that what started as animosity is turning to love.
The bright, colorful tone, coupled with its adaptation bona fides makes it look akin to other Prime Video fare like “The Summer I Turned Pretty.” There’s also a healthy dose of 1953’s “Roman Holiday,” especially with this film’s emphasis on a royal deciding between love...

How ‘Polite Society’ Created an Exhilarating Blend of Action from ‘The Matrix,’ Eunice Huthart, More
From the Bruce Lee poster on her wall to the spinning kick by real-life stuntwoman Eunice Huthart she spends hours trying to perfect, aspiring stuntwoman Ria Khan (Priya Kansara) lives and breathes action cinema. So did the team making “Polite Society,” which draws stylistically on everything from the heightened wirework action of “The Matrix” and “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” to the gleefully destructive chaos of “Kill Bill,” and actual, real-world karate bouts.
There’s a wonderful differentiation to the fights, which all feel as targeted and emotionally distinct as the songs in a musical: Ria slowly gets more confident, the stakes behind her sister Lena (Ritu Arya) marrying a too-perfect doctor Salim (Akshay Khanna) and acquiring a domineering mother-in-law Raheela (Nimra Bucha) get higher — and Ria’s schemes to stop the marriage get more bonkers.

Despite erratic nationwide weather pattern, May Day 2023 has nevertheless brought with it a palpable sense of Spring reverie and renewal—not least of all in movie theaters and on streaming platforms. The freshly-launched Writers Strike (necessary and overdue) will no doubt result in some crinkling of the garden hose of fresh content, but that’s for future content consumers to worry about. In the meantime, enjoy this month’s Don’t-Miss Indies!

[Editor’s note: This story contains spoilers for “Polite Society.”]
It took everything I had not to yell out loud during “Polite Society.”
Not because of the intense fight sequences, killer martial arts, or even that twist — what had this reporter out of her seat was a dance sequence that unfolds during the film’s final act. As Ria (Priya Kansara) dances at sister Lena’s (Ritu Arya) wedding, she aims to “distract” the assembled guests while her friends are busy executing a master plan that’s consumed most of the film’s running time. Dressed in an emerald-green outfit, Ria takes the stage, and the opening notes of “Maar Dala” begin to play.
Composed by Ismail Darbar with lyrics by Nusrat Badr, “Maar Dala” first appeared in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s 2002 film “Devdas,” based on 1917 Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay novel of the same name. In the film, Madhuri Dixit-Nene performs the number (sung by Kavita Krishnamurthy and K.K.) as courtesan Chandramukhi,...

Focus Features’ Sundance-premiering Polite Society opens on 927 screens, the feature debut of writer/director Nida Manzoor, creator of We Are Lady Parts, the Peacock comedy about the eponymous British punk rock band.
This comedic mash-up of sisterly affection, parental disappointment and bold action, where martial artist-in-training Ria Khan tryies to save her older sister from an impending marriage, is 91% Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. Deadline review here.
It’s joined by a handful of other specialty titles with theatrical debuts ranging from 900 screens to one, following a week where specialty and independent film was showered with kind words at CinemaCon, the annual exhibitor conference. Focus chair Peter Kujawksi called the specialty audience passionate and the market a launching pad for exceptional talent and “unique and elevated stories.” No disagreement there. He also said the specialty business has “recovered better and faster’’ out of Covid than the overall box office. Indie...

Editors note: This review original published January 20 after its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. It opens Friday.
Written and directed by Nida Manzoor, Polite Society stars Priya Kansara (Bridgerton), Ritu Arya (Umbrella Academy) and Nimra Bucha (Disney+’s Ms. Marvel). The Focus Features movie had its world premiere Friday in the Midnight section of the Sundance Film Festival.
The movie begins with Ria (Kansara), a Pakistani teenager in a karate class. She’s a purple belt who is serious about honing her skills to become a stunt woman. She records YouTube videos of her home training and recites the line “I am the fury.” Her older sister Lena (Ayra) is an art school dropout who mopes around her parents’ house and often helps Ria record her videos. Ria is obsessed with professional stunt woman Eunice Huthart, who she frequently emails but never receives a response.

Arriving in theaters nationwide Friday, April 28th is Nida Manzoor’s Polite Society (a film that this writer very much enjoyed out of Sundance) courtesy of Focus Features. The film stars Priya Kansara as Ria, a high schooler who dreams of one day becoming a stuntwoman who must put her own unique training to the test when she has to save her sister Lena (Ritu Arya) from marrying Salim (Akshay Khanna), who has his own nefarious reasons for wanting to find a wife.
During the recent press day, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak briefly with both Kansara and Arya about their involvement in the project, but the duo discussed what attracted them to their respective roles and how much they enjoyed working on Polite Society as a whole.
Check out our video interview with both Priya Kansara and Ritu Arya below and look for Polite Society in theaters everywhere this weekend.

Though she’s the only writer credited on it, filmmaker Nida Manzoor had a very special writing partner on her debut feature “Polite Society.” The British-Pakistani creator of “We Are Lady Parts” told IndieWire that she co-wrote her film with her younger self — literally.
“I wrote the script over 10 years ago, and it basically got passed on everywhere,” Manzoor said in a recent Zoom interview with IndieWire. “It wasn’t until the success of ‘Lady Parts’ that it sort of became something viable again — for the first time, actually — and it was weird. I really had so much self-doubt around it, because it had gotten nowhere [because it was] just hard to define.”
It’s a question she got used to hearing from potential producers: “How are we going to sell a film that we can’t define?’”

During “Polite Society,” writer-director Nida Manzoor’s boisterous, shrewdly funny and altogether wonderful coming-of-age action-adventure, you might try to recall the last time you’ve seen a young female on the big screen with as much fire in her belly as Ria. Was it the football-loving and tradition defying Jess in “Bend it Like Beckham,” the precocious rebel Marjane in “Persepolis,” the all-female trash metal stars of the recent documentary “Sirens” or the real-life Syrian sisters Yusra and Sarah Mardini in “Swimmers”?
While the lead Pakistani character of “Polite Society”—a die-hard martial arts enthusiast played by a fierce Priya Kansara—isn’t an existing hero based on a real-life story of courage, her defiant spirit is so lovingly and precisely defined by Manzoor that you unreservedly believe in her when Ria claims: “I am the fury!”

For her first feature, We Are Lady Parts creator Nida Manzoor crafts the highly entertaining action/adventure/sci-fi hybrid Polite Society that explores what happens when traditional values and modern sensibilities clash to thrilling effect.
In Polite Society, Priya Kansara plays the strong-willed Ria – a Pakistani high schooler who wants nothing more than to become a stunt woman, a profession that her parents aren’t exactly keen about her pursuing after she graduates. Ria’s older sister Lena (Ritu Arya) is also something of an anti-traditionalist too, as she recently dropped out of art school due creative frustration and has been trying to figure out what’s next. The sisters end up at a hoity-toity party due to their mother Fatima’s (Shobu Kapoor) desire to fit in with all the other moms in their community where Lena is introduced to pretty boy Salim (Akshay Khanna), who is on the hunt for a wife.

Filmmakers Quentin Tarantino and Edgar Wright are still making movies, but their signature styles already influenced an entire generation of artists. Toss their works into a blender along with Bollywood flair, and you’ll get Nida Manzoor’s feature film debut, Polite Society. This offbeat martial arts comedy doesn’t reach the heights of its inspirations, but its high-spirited nature makes it an infectious adventure.

Sometimes when things fall apart, you've got to kick a little butt. That's message behind Focus Features's "Polite Society," which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on Jan. 21. Focus Features released the trailer for the action comedy on Jan. 18, and it's all about Ria Khan (Priya Kansara), a teenage girl in London who's obsessed with becoming a professional stunt woman. School doesn't matter; all she cares about is martial arts and her sister, Lena (Ritu Arya), who's struggling after dropping out of art school. But when Lena announces that she has given up on art, is getting engaged to a guy Ria thinks is a "smarmy wanker," and is moving to Singapore immediately after the wedding, Ria is worried that something much deeper is going on - and thinks she's the only action hero who can save her sister. "They are not taking her away without a fight," she vows.

Ria Khan is “the fury,” or so she repeatedly claims, in Polite Society, an absolutely bonkers action-packed comedy from writer/director Nida Manzoor (We Are Lady Parts). Ria’s a schoolgirl with big dreams and no filter in Manzoor’s wild and crazy feature film directorial debut.
Don’t mess with the Khan sisters or Ria (Priya Kansara) will unleash hell. Or at least she’ll try her damnedest. She’s got her mind set on becoming a stuntwoman, even though her kicks miss more often than they connect. Never mind that her incredibly patient Pakistani parents aren’t supportive of her chosen profession or that her teacher tries to squash her dreams by suggesting she’s more suited to become a doctor. The horror! Nothing will keep Ria from her chosen profession.

The teenage central character of Polite Society has more energy than she knows what to do with, and so does the film that contains her.
This debut feature from writer/director Nida Manzoor, creator of the acclaimed television series We Are Lady Parts, is the sort of wildly audacious work that signifies a rising talent who can’t wait to throw more ideas into the cinematic mix. Admittedly, not all of them gel in this raucous comedy receiving its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival before a theatrical release by Focus Features in April. But even when the ambitious film overshoots, you can’t wait to see what happens next.
And a lot happens in this story revolving around Ria (Priya Kansara), a British-Pakistani girl who dreams of becoming a stuntwoman like her idol (represented by photos of famed real-life British stuntwoman Eunice Huthart), to whom she consistently writes...

London teen Ria Khan (Priya Kansara) desperately wants to be a stuntwoman. Her family and teachers don't take her seriously — they'd rather her follow the expected path of becoming a doctor — but she's devoted: She makes martial arts videos in her backyard and writes (unanswered) emails to her idol, a world-famous stuntwoman named Eunice, asking for advice. Ria is convinced two things are destined to happen: she will achieve her goal, and her older sister Lena (Ritu Arya) will become an artist. If “Polite Society” were a Jane Austen novel, a big wedding would be the happiest of endings, but in the eyes of the film’s feisty teenage protagonist, Ria Khan (Priya Kansara), watching her older sister Lena (Ritu Arya) trade her art career for a husband feels like Game Over. If Lena can’t make it as a painter, what hope is there for Ria, who dreams of becoming a stuntwoman? That’s the engine driving writer-director Nida Manzoor’s rowdy feature debut, which channels everything from Sergio Leone to “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” in its wild and frequently outrageous route to sparing Lena the indignity of an (almost) arranged marriage.
Bringing irreverent pop culture mojo to a middle-class British South Asian family story, “Polite Society” packs much of the same appeal that made “Bend It Like Beckham” such a hit two decades earlier, plus a twist that brings...

Stunt performers are arguably among the most overlooked members of the filmmaking industry. After all, they put their lives and bodies on the line for the daring stunts we see in movies, both big and small, every year. Needless to say, we don't typically get films centered around them, much less give them the spotlight they deserve.
In Nida Manzoor's "Polite Society," however, stunt people might just be the key to exposing a dangerous conspiracy. Manzoor, who made much-deserved waves with her Peacock series "We Are Lady Parts," makes her feature directorial debut with this action-packed comedy premiering at the upcoming Sundance Film Festival. To mark such an occasion, Focus Features released our first look at the film, in addition to revealing when audiences who are not Park City-bound can check it out.
The film follows Ria (Priya Kansara), who's on a mission to become a stuntwoman, much to the dismay of her parents.
