Alex Cambert
- Actor
When Alex Cambert walks onto a stage - or into a room - laughs are
never far behind.
Cambert, a two-time Emmy Award winning broadcaster, recently became Hispanic Heritage Ambassador for The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, creating and producing hilariously insightful man-on-the-street pieces to "enlighten and en-Latin" audiences.
Before that, he helped develop "Mas Vale Tarde con Alex Cambert," a late night talk show for Telemundo - a rarity for Spanish television. Shaping and hosting his own talk show was definitely a dream come true for this gifted comedian. While some have called him the Latin Leno, Advertising Age says, "Think Jerry Seinfeld, if the comic were Cuban-American, and spoke Spanish."
Most recently, Cambert has been expanding his horizons as a producer in reality TV, with a slate of hilarious projects in various stages of development.
Noting his strong international appeal, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and Dick Clark Productions tapped Cambert to cohost the 64th Annual Golden Globes pre-show. (The show aired in 27 countries and, for the first time ever, was simulcast over the web on MSN.) As always, Cambert displayed his sense of fun and spontaneity on the red carpet as he charmed the Botox off of Hollywood's biggest stars.
King World and Sony Pictures Television selected Cambert to host the revival of the game show classic The Joker's Wild. Cambert immediately contemporized the well known format and made it thoroughly his own. Executive Producer Harry Friedman (Wheel Of Fortune & Jeopardy) said, of working with Cambert, "Alex is a fun, fresh face." (Alex attributes that to hours of exfoliation and occasional moisturizing.)
Cambert served as the entertainment and lifestyle correspondent for ABC's "Good Morning America" where he wrote and produced his own segments. He brought what TV Week called his "personality plus" style of broadcasting to the morning show genre -- covering everything from awards shows, to in-depth celebrity interviews, to the anniversary vigil for Elvis at Graceland.
Live television has given Cambert the perfect forum in which to display his lightning-quick wit. He provided humorous commentary for the Miss America Pageant and brought his singular perspective to the behind-the-scenes action when he hosted Countdown to The Emmy Awards both for ABC. He also hosted The Latin Billboard Music Awards and Carnaval's Calle 8, one of the world's largest Hispanic street festivals, for Telemundo.
Cambert not only shines in front of the camera, but he has made a mark for himself behind the scenes as both producer and host of original network specials for Telemundo. La Silla Caliente, his first effort as producer, garnered Cambert his first Emmy Award as well as a nomination for the coveted Imagen Award. His second project, Noche de Estrellas, marked the first time that Spanish-language television in the U.S. was broadcast live from the Academy Awards.
He previously completed three seasons as senior entertainment reporter/producer for Telemundo's nighttime entertainment magazine, Edicion Especial. He popularized his Silla Caliente segment through his adroit bilingual word play and warm on-camera personality. His extemporaneous interview style got Hollywood's top celebrities to drop their guard, laugh, share secrets, and even speak a little Español with Señor Cambert.
Cambert was also the host of the hilarious game show Los Recien Casados, based on the vintage favorite The Newlywed Game. The show, Sony's first venture with Telemundo, showcased Cambert's trademark quick wit and lively conversational style as he tickled the audience's funny bone. He was nominated for an ACE Award as Outstanding Host in a talk or variety program.
In addition, Cambert hosted Amazing Tails on Discovery's sister network, Animal Planet. The program spotlighted his on-the-spot comedic abilities as he brought humor to the great outdoors by interacting with all sorts of animals, including "lions and tigers and bears." ("Oh my!")
Cambert brings a wide range of talents to every project. Entertainment Weekly described him as "Ben Stiller meets Adam Sandler." His bevy of amazing and quirky characters have been featured on Late Show with David Letterman and have been heard throughout South America where he was the signature voice for Locomotion, the area's leading animation network. In fact, he won the prestigious BDA - Gold Air Award at the 1998 Promax Festival in Toronto for his work with Locomotion.
Cambert honed his comedic and broadcasting skills in New York, where he reported for the Emmy Award-winning entertainment magazine The Scene. He also performed excerpts from his auto-biographical one-man show, One Flew Over The Cuban's Nest, at Caroline's Comedy Club.
Cambert landed his first job in broadcasting in radio as a morning personality on Miami's WAXY 106 FM, co-hosting Ellen & Alex in the Morning. Cambert's impact was felt immediately. Florida Highway Patrol will never forget the listener who ran her car off the road because she was laughing too hard to drive. By the way, the ratings doubled, too.
Cambert has been performing improvisational comedy on stage since he was in college. He was a premier player with Mental Floss until he formed his own troupe, Miami Laugh Machine.
Cambert, who is fluent in Spanish, hosted Juegos Nocturnos, an internationally syndicated Spanish language game show, and Frecuencia Musical, a weekly sketch comedy and music video show on Telemundo.
Bottom Line: Alex Cambert's diverse comic talents guarantee laughs in any language.
