The 12th iteration of the Austin-based television festival also will include a Dawson’s Creek 25th anniversary screening and conversation as well as a discussion with the cast and creatives of Outlander.

Justified: City Primeval, from showrunners/executive producers Dave Andron and Michael Dinner and based on the novel City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit, is an eight-part limited series that picks up 15 years after U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) left the hollers of Kentucky in FX’s Justified. Netflix has unveiled the official trailer for the back half of Firefly Lane Season 2, which will bring the dramedy to an end for good.

The series has followed Kate and Tully's relationship over 30 years, and just like real-life, it hasn't been easy sailing for either of them.

The first half of the second season found the pair ending their years-long friendship, but fans were left with plenty of cliffhangers.

When “Firefly Lane” co-executive producer and author of the novel Kristin Hannah met with the TV adaptation’s creator Maggie Friedman, she gave her two pointers on the core of the story, which chronicles the ever-evolving friendship between quirky, methodical Kate Mularkey (Sarah Chalke) and bold, ambitious Tallulah ‘Tully’ Hart.

“The single most important thing was that this was a story that highlighted almost a female soulmate, your very best friend who is your best friend from the time you’re 13, for all of your life,” the author said in a recent interview with TheWrap. “We don’t sort of see enough of that representation on TV. I do think that the series has done an amazing job of creating these two women who, as different as they are, you absolutely believe that they love each other, and when the chips are down, they’re going to be there for each other.

Netflix announced Monday that Firefly Lane will conclude with its forthcoming second season.

The news comes as a bit of a surprise, but there is some good news.

The second -- and now final season -- will comprise 16 episodes.

That is six more episodes than Firefly Lane Season 1, which launched in February 2021 on Netflix.

Firefly Lane returns on December 2, with the first nine episodes of the season.

The final seven episodes will then premiere in 2023.

“Firefly Lane” is a series that, despite being set over several decades, reminds us of how things have painfully stayed the same. “It’s really interesting to watch the evolution,” series creator Maggie Friedman told IndieWire. “We’ve made so much progress, but we’re still fighting some of the same battles.” Those same battles include sexual harassment and rape culture that the characters Kate and Tully navigate from their teenage years in the 1970s through to 2003.

It’s easy to see why Chalke and Heigl were the perfect actresses to play the grown-up versions of author Kristin Hannah’s characters since both actresses have been working in Hollywood since they were teenagers. “Sarah, she’s so endearing, and so lovable, and so funny,” Friedman said. “And Katie brings such a humanity to Tully — [and] that character, if not played right, you don’t love her because she does a lot of stuff that’s questionable.

“Firefly Lane” definitely feels like a series set in 2003. By that, I mean if someone told me this show was filmed that year and had been languishing in a vault for the last 18 years, I’d believe it. The series, an adaptation of Kristin Hannah’s novel of the same name, feels akin to series like “Brothers and Sisters” or “Parenthood” in its high-stakes melodrama and tackling of real issues. But with the former ramped up to 11, the latter — looking at sexism and workplace harassment — is overshadowed at best and incredibly maudlin at worst. I’d love to say that I was wowed by Netflix’s series adaption of Kristin Hannah’s novel, Firefly Lane (dropping Wednesday, Feb. 3). Truth be told, I dive into every show that I’m tasked with reviewing hoping the same thing — to be dazzled, stunned, impressed.

I was none of those things. There was nothing there that we haven’t seen before, done smarter, more wittily and incisively, simply better.

The forthcoming female-led reboot of Doogie Howser has found its lead in Peyton Elizabeth Lee (Andi Mack).

The series is titled Doogie Kameāloha, M.D., and is a female-led reimagining of the classic ABC medical dramedy, the streamer announced Thursday.

The streamer also dropped the logline:

Set in modern-day Hawaii, the 10-episode comedy follows Lahela "Doogie" Kamealoha, a mixed race 16-year-old girl, juggling a budding medical career and life as a teenager.

Guiding Lahela (and also complicating things) is her family, including her spit-fire Irish mother who’s also her supervisor at the hospital, and her ‘Local Boy’ father struggling to accept that his daughter is no longer his little girl.

The original Doogie Howser starred Neil Patrick Harris, and aired on ABC from 1989 to 1993.

The rest of the cast will be announced at a later date.

In today’s TV news roundup, NBC released a trailer for the fifth season of “This Is Us,” and HBO Max renewed “Craftopia” for a second season.

Casting

Kathleen Turner will reprise her role in the third and final season of Netflix’s “The Kominsky Method.” The actor returns in her role of Roz Volander, a skilled doctor who has a volatile relationship with Sandy Kominsky (Michael Douglas). In the upcoming season, Roz will join her daughter Mindy (Sarah Baker) in Los Angeles. Turner is represented by Buchwald and Culture Group.

Renewals

HBO Max has renewed its competition series “Craftopia” for a second season, set to debut in 2021. The eight-episode season, titled “Craftopia: Holiday Showdown” will feature new contestants and inventive challenges. The show is hosted and executive produced by crafting expert Lauren Riihimaki, and Rhett Bachner and Brien Meagher also executive produce for B17 Entertainment with Claire Kosloff signed on as showrunner.
