Emílio Domingos is a filmmaker, anthropologist, researcher, screenwriter and producer. He is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture, Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). Graduated in Social Sciences from UFRJ with an emphasis on Visual Anthropology, Urban Culture and Youth, and mastered from the Postgraduate Program in Culture and Territorialities.
As a director, he made the features: Black Rio! Black Power! (2023) about the 1970s soul dances in Rio and Chic Show (2023) about the famous black dance in São Paulo; Favela é Moda, winner of the Best Documentary Feature Film by Popular Vote award at the Rio Festival (2019); Deixa na Régua, winner of the Special Jury Prize at the Rio Festival (2016); The Battle of Passinho; winner of the New Directions Exhibition at the Rio Festival (2012); L.A.P.A., Best Film at the Câmera Mundo Festival, in the Netherlands (2008). For TV, he was General Director of the series "Enigma da Energia Escura" with Emicida (GNT), in which he also directed the episode "Eu Falei Faraó - Cultura e Resistência".
As a screenwriter, in addition to his films, he wrote "Gilberto Gil Antologia Vol.1" for Canal Curta; the series "Anitta: Made in Honório" for Netflix; the feature film "Viva São João", by Andrucha Waddington; the series "Viajando com os Gil" for Amazon, the podcast "No Passinho do Funk" for Kondzilla/Spotify; the series "Abre Alas, with Agnes Nunes" for YouTube Originals; the "Guided Tour" video for Google's Black Awareness Month campaign; the series "Romário, o cara" for HBO.
Emílio has also worked as a curator of the International Ethnographic Film Exhibition and the Visões Periféricas Festival. And, as a researcher, he worked on films such as Mistério do Samba, Viva São João, Pierre Verger, Sou Feia Mas Tô na Moda and Santa Cruz; with directors such as João Salles, Breno Silveira, Lula Buarque de Hollanda; and on the program Esquenta, on TV Globo. He also served as head of creation on the program "É o Fluxo!", on Multishow.
