The actor, writer, director and producer (who famously worked on and starred in Sons of Anarchy) was serving as an executive producer on the show, which is a Western starring the likes of Lena Headey and Gillian Anderson.

News of his departure comes with an alleged three weeks left of production, and sources have hinted at what sparked the decision.

Sutter, who created the drama and was serving as showrunner, left the show over creative differences with Netflix. The Abandons, set in the Oregon Territory in the 1850s, has a few weeks of production on its season remaining and will continue filming in Calgary, Alberta.

Netflix declined comment.

Netflix gave a straight-to-series order to The Abandons in October 2022. That makes him a bit of an awkward fit at Netflix, where execs have a reputation for micromanaging.

Today’s Deadline report claims that Sutter clashed with his streaming bosses over the running time of The Abandons’ pilot.

Sutter’s cut of the episode allegedly clocked in at one hour and forty minutes.

According to a report from Deadline, the reason behind Sutter's sudden departure from The Abandons has to do with "creative differences" regarding the direction of the series. As the outlet explains, Netflix wasn't on board with a cut of the seven-episode series' first episode, which clocked in with a 100-minute runtime.

Following the discovery of the movie-length pilot episode, the plan moving forward was to split the first episode into two episodes. That called for the creation of a newly written cliffhanger and additional scenes to allow both episodes to stand on their own.

Deadline reports that Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter has exited The Abandons just three weeks before production on the first season of the Netflix series was slated to wrap. As always, the reason apparently comes down to those dreaded creative differences.

The report states that Netflix was concerned when the initial cut of the first episode came in at 1 hour and 40 minutes. It proved impossible to trim the episode down to an hour, so they decided it should be split into two. This required some additional scenes to create a cliffhanger for the new premiere, which have reportedly been written but not shot. After viewing the unfinished split episodes and part of the third, Netflix felt they “looked a bit disjointed and not propulsive enough.” A meeting between Netflix execs and Sutter to address the concerns didn’t take place before he departed.

Kurt Sutter’s upcoming western series “The Abandons” is rounding out its cast.

Variety has learned exclusively that Ryan Hurst, Michael Greyeyes, Michiel Huisman, and Toby Hemingway have all joined the Netflix series in recurring roles. Exact character details are being kept under wraps.

The series marks a reunion for Hurst and Sutter, who previously worked together on the hit FX series “Sons of Anarchy.” Sutter created the series, on which Hurst played the character Opie for the show’s first five seasons. Hurst is also known for his time on “The Walking Dead” and shows like “Bates Motel” and “Outsiders.” He has starred in films like “Remember the Titans” and “We Were Soldiers.”

He is repped by UTA and Piper Kaniecki Management.

Greyeyes has previously been in films such as “Blood Quantum” and “Wild Indian.” His recent credits include the Taylor Sheridan series “1923” at Paramount+ and the comedy “Rutherford Falls” at Peacock.

Exclusive: Katey Sagal (Sons of Anarchy), Billy Campbell (Troll), and Rhys Coiro (Hustlers) have joined Sophie Turner in the psychological thriller Trust for Twisted Pictures and Republic Pictures.

Details as to their roles are under wraps. Other new additions set to round out the cast include Peter Mensah (Gladiator 2), Forrest Goodluck (The Revenant), and Gianni Paolo (Power).

In Trust, Turner plays a Hollywood starlet who seeks refuge in a secluded Airbnb following a high-profile scandal, only to find herself at the mercy of hardened criminals on the hunt for a score.

Carlson Young (The Blazing World) is directing from a script by Gigi Levangie (Stepmom), with Twisted Pictures’ Oren Koules producing alongside Miles Koules of Koulest Productions. The film stems from a new multi-picture distribution deal between Twisted Pictures, producer of the Saw franchise, and Republic Pictures. Production commences in Mexico later this month.

Exclusive: Netflix is rounding out its cast for The Lincoln Lawyer Season 3 with Michael Irby, Maisie Klompus (Good Trouble) and Wolé Parks (Superman and Lois) in recurring roles. Additionally, Jon Tenney (And Just Like That…) returns to the series as Mickey Haller, Sr.

They join returning stars Manuel Garcia-Rulfo as Mickey Haller; Becki Newton as Lorna; Jazz Raycole as Izzy; Angus Sampson as Cisco; and Yaya DaCosta as Andrea Freemann. Klompus will play Annabeth Stephens, a neighbor of the late Giselle Dallinger, she is interviewed by Cisco, but her testimony ends up being more useful to the prosecution.

Irby is coming off two hit shows that ended their runs in 2023, FX’s Mayans M.C. and HBO’s Barry.

In the Kurt Sutter and Elgin James-co-created motorcycle drama Mayans. M.C., Irby played the series regular role of Obispo ‘Bishop’ Losa across the show’s 5 seasons. The Sons of Anarchy spinoff follows the titular M.C. based in the fictional California border town of Santo Padre. Bishop held leadership positions including former Presidente and Vice Presidente of the club’s Santo Padre Charter. Exclusive: Paradigm has signed Kim Coates, the actor and producer best known for a major role on FX’s Emmy-nominated crime drama Sons of Anarchy, for representation.

In Kurt Sutter’s series focused on the lives of outlaw motorcycle club members, which ran for seven seasons between 2008 and 2014, Coates plays one of the lead characters, Tig Trager, who serves as the sergeant-at-arms and is often involved in the club’s most challenging and controversial activities.

The forthcoming Netflix Western adds six cast members to its roster today, with Lucas Till, Diana Silvers, Lamar Johnson, Aisling Franciosi, and Natalia del Riego.
