Orange Studio will unveil exclusive first footage from Léa Domenach’s Bernadette starring Catherine Deneuve as former French first lady Bernadette Chirac and from Philippe Lefebvre’s star-powered comedy New Beginnings at the Unifrance Rendez-Vous in Paris this week.

Set to be released via Warner Bros. France later in 2023, Bernadette has been one of the French film world’s buzziest titles in recent months since the legendary Deneuve took on the role.

Marion Cotillard and her partner Guillaume Canet have reteamed to star in the film “Rock’n Roll.” This time the duo, who previously worked together on “Blood Ties” and “Little White Lies,” portray themselves in this meta showbiz comedy.

After Canet is told by a young co-star that he’s not “rock’n roll” enough and can’t sell films anymore, the actor then tries to prove her wrong by getting help from his wife and actress Marion Cotillard. The first trailer (via The Playlist) doesn’t include subtitles but it has enough fun scenes that show the actors in sticky situations, and helps you understand the narrative.

After working together on Little White Lies and Blood Ties, for the third time this decade Guillaume Canet has directed his partner Marion Cotillard. The film, titled Rock’n Roll, doesn’t have U.S. distribution yet, but it’ll arrive in France early next year and so it’s time for the first international trailer.

A drama with a meta spin, Canet and Cotillard play themselves, with the latter telling the former he’s not rock ‘n’ roll enough, so he “freaks out” and goes to learn from the French king of rock, Johnny Hallyday. While the first trailer is free of subtitles, one can see the meta elements at play with awards shows and studio back lots. Canet, whose last film was co-scripted by James Gray, hasn’t quite had the U.S break-out that some other French contemporaries have had, but hopefully this one gets some attention here.

With three Sundance premieres under his belt, it may have only been a matter of time before Antonio Campos (Christine, Simon Killer, Afterschool) moved onto studio fare. It was less a matter of time that he’d direct a prequel to one of the most popular horror films in movie history, yet THR has word that 20th Century Fox seeks him for The First Omen, a movie who want to know a bit more about the possessed child named Damien.

Details on the project are a bit sparse, save for the involvement of screenwriter Ben Jacoby and, on the producing side, David S. Goyer‘s Phantom Four. Make of the suggestive title what you will — if you have any desire to think about this in any terms, I mean. The prospect of Campos’ static, long-shot aesthetic entering the big-studio reboot / remake realm is intriguing, certainly, but to what end, really?...

Reda Kateb to star as legendary jazz guitarist while Pathe will also continue to sell Marion Cotillard-Guillaume Canet comedy Rock ‘n’ Roll.

Pathé International has boarded sales on Etienne Comar’s upcoming biopic Django Melodies starring French actor Reda Kateb [pictured] as the legendary French jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt.

The feature focuses on Reinhardt’s adventures during World War Two when he tried to flee France to escape persecution by the Nazi because of his Roma ethnicity.

The jazz guitarist – who co-founded the iconic Quintette du Hot Club de France with violinist Stéphane Grappelli in the 1930s - was at the peak of his career when war broke out in 1939, performing regularly in the top clubs of Paris as well as collaborating with Us artists such as Louis Armstrong or Dizzy Gillespie.

Friday came & went and there was no Fantastic Fest 2012 announcement. We published a list of films we thought would play and so far, we got one hit on that (Dead Sushi). Fantastic Fest has officially announced their first wave of programming for this years festival. This is just the first wave and there will be plenty more films to announce between now and September along with the amazing events that are put on by the festival.

France already has one high profile nightclub set crime thriller on the horizon with Toronto film fest hit Sleepless Night but, proving that 'parallel development' isn't just an American phenomenon, there's also a second on the way in Philippe Lefebvre's One Night (Une Nuit).This one appears to be going for a slightly glossier style than the raw energy of Sleepless Night and the club featured prominently in the trailer is of a much sexier variety - consider that your workplace safety warning - but will it be enough to create a bit of separation between the two projects? After the success of last year's crime drama The Town, Ben Affleck is filling his schedule with directing work. Deadline reports Warner Bros has hired Affleck to direct its co-production (with Universal Pictures) of Tell No One, a remake of the 2006 French thriller based on the novel by Harlan Coben and directed by Guillaume Canet.

Sony Pictures initially attempted to adapt Coben's novel in 2003, with Star Trek screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman attempting to crack the dense and intricately plotted novel into a movie, but it never came together and Sony eventually gave up. Canet's and co-screenwriter Philippe Lefebvre's attempt proved successful, with their version of Tell No One debuting to excellent reviews.

Chris Terrio (Heights) is writing the screenplay for the movie, which, to put it simply, follows a pediatrician hunting down the truth of his wife's murder. Terrio also wrote the script for the political thriller Argo,...

The trio of New York Times critics (Manohla Dargis, A.O. Scott and Stephen Holden) have weighed in with their own nominations for the year's best in movies with their selections for Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress and Original and Adapted Screenplays. Quickly glancing through the list I see Manohla Dargis loved Charlie Kaufman's Synecdoche, New York (at least the acting) and is the only one that gave The Dark Knight any love. Thankfully Slumdog Millionaire wasn't "nominated" for anything other than a lone Adapted Screenplay notice from A.O. Scott. Happy-Go-Lucky saw plenty of attention and believe it or not, there isn't one film all three could agree on for Best Picture with Wall-e and Happy-Go-Lucky being the front-runners as they were mentioned twice - Dargis was the main reason for this as her selections didn't show up on either Stephen Holden or A.
