The most prestigious film festival in the world has officially commenced at the French Riviera with 2024 being a significant year for Indian cinema. Seven Indian films have been chosen to be screened at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, with Payal Kapadia-directorial leading the line.
The Malayalam film “All We Imagine as Light” broke the jinx as it became the first Indian cinema in three decades to compete at the festival’s main segment, Palme d’Or. Shaji N. Karun’s 1994 film “Swaham” was the last film to compete in this category.
Though not the Palme d’Or, several other Indian productions have won big in these 30 years and brought glory to the Indian cinema.

Written & Directed by Manish Jha
It took me a while to figure out what is wrong with Manish Jha’s third feature film, and his first in 9 years.
The Legend Of Michael Mishra is the movie equivalent of Eddie Redmayne’s character in The Danish Girl. This is a case of role assumption, a personality masquerade. While Eddie played a girl trapped in a man’s body, The Legend Of Michael Mishra is an animation film masquerading as a feature.
There is no other explanation for the filmed ferocity of cartoonish excesses that slash across the 2-hour film in flinch-inducing flamboyance. The savagely broad satirical strokes with which the characters are painted make the people who populate Manish’s world like like puppets on a swig. These Bihari characters look so drunk they would find it hard to enter Nitish Kumar’s...

Arshad Warsi's latest film The Legend of Michael Mishra which released today has run into a major problem. The film has released all over India except Punjab as the government of Punjab has banned it. On Thursday, a spokesperson for the Punjab government released an official statement announcing the ban of the film stating that the decision was taken due to prevailing strong resentment among the Valmiki community about some objectionable references to Maharishi Valmiki. The film's suspension was aimed to keep peace and social harmony in the state as the film may have caused protests. The government has suspended the film with immediate effect for two months and during this time it will be considered as an uncertified film in Punjab. Directed by Manish Jha, The Legend of Michael Mishra is a madcap comedy starring Arshad Warsi, Aditi Rao Hydari, Boman Irani and Kayoze Irani.

A lot of actors nowadays begin their homework for their roles much before they start shooting for a film and actor Aditi Rao Hydari is no different.
In her next film The Legend of Michael Mishra, where she plays Arshad’s love interest, she has taken every measure to play the part perfectly.
Since the movie is heavily based in Patna and her character hails from the same, she spent time with many locals there to get her Bihari accent right. Aditi says it is important to justify the language that you adopt for a character and also get the tone and pronunciation correct.
As part of her preparation, she also took part in workshops. But it was the day to day interaction with the locals that helped her speak the language accurately.

Playing a conman is one thing and a Casanova another, but being a husband to 13 women sounds bizarre. Well, Arshad Warsi will be seen having 13 wives in his upcoming film Fraud Saiyyan. Following the lines of Ranveer Singh who conned women in his film Ladies v/s Ricky Bahl, Arshad Warsi will be using marriage as a means to con the ladies whom he comes across in his life. We hear that Arshad's character will use marriage as a profession and target well settled middle class women who can support him monetarily. Though the story is about love and betrayal, it is being said that the film will be treated with humour. Fraud Saiyyan will be shot extensively in North India especially amidst picturesque locales of Bhopal and it is said to commence from November onwards. Produced by Prakash Jha, Fraud Saiyyan will be directed by Saurabh Shukla. Meanwhile, Arshad Warsi...

An uproar of protest has broken out in the Gehlaur village of Bihar where once lived the legendary 'Mountain Man' Dashrath Manjhi who hand-chiseled a road through a rocky mountain to connect his inaccessible village to the nearest town. Says a villager, "Aamir Khan visited us on February 25 and told us that the first episode of his serial was dedicated to Dashrath Manjhi. We were all glued to the television in the community hall in our village at 10 am. We were sorely disappointed when the episode aired was about something else. Mumbai, Aug 5: Showing rare grace and sincerity, filmmaker Manish Jha has decided to abandon plans for making a biopic on Dashrath Manjhi, the man who dug a roadway out of a mountain that separated his village in Bihar from the nearest hospital.

Bejoy Nambiar has been left with no choice but to film the three stories of his new film David in reverse. He has just completed the third story featuring Tamil star Vikram and Tabu. Now he moves into the second story this July with Vinay Virmani and Lara Dutta in the cast, though the two are not paired together. The first story with Neil Nitin Mukesh in the lead has been the most problematic. Though Neil green lighted the project, he has yet to find dates for it, as he's busy shooting for a horror thriller with his lady-love Sonal Chauhan. Says a source, "Neil favoured 3G, the film that was shot in Fiji. Away from prying eyes in Mumbai, Neil and Sonal got to know one another really well." Back home, rather than twiddle his thumb, Bejoy Nambiar has decided to shoot another story with a very unusual cast.

Though the film didn't do many wonders at the box office, it was acclaimed for it's unique presentation and the fact that it boasted of a huge A list star cast. Circa 2012 and the feat is being taken one level higher up with a film which has, hold your breath, 11 stories. Politician Kripashankar Singh’s son is unperturbed and believes the only way ahead is to make good cinema. He’s roped in Matrubhoomi director Manish Jha to helm his next project, Mountain Man, and is hoping to sign on the Heroes’ star, Sendhil Ramamurthy for it. Vikramaditya Motwane’s “Udaan”, the film that made it to Un Certain Regard at Cannes International Film festival after seven years has been the talk of the town lately. With Udaan, Indian cinema’s seven year long jinxed relationship with the premier film festival has come to an end. Murali Nair’s Arimpara was the last film to have made it to Un Certain Regard, the section that carries the second most prestigious award, in the year 2003. Prior to that, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas was presented as a special screening out of competition at the festival in 2002.
Come to think of it, India and Cannes have had a cordial relationship right from the start. 1946, the year one of the oldest film festivals began at Cannes, Chetan Anand’s Neecha Nagar was screened as a Feature film in competition. Neecha Nagar was a pioneering effort in realistic Indian cinema and...

Bollywood filmmakers usually avoid making women-centric films, in fear of delivering a box office turkey. But times have now changed. There is news of not one, but two upcoming films that feature women in major roles. The first is an untitled Shilpa Shetty– Bipasha Basu starrer. While it was kept on hold during the recession, its shooting has supposedly resumed after the two actresses enjoyed themselves on Farah Khan’s show. It is an action film for which Shilpa and Bipasha are undergoing training. It will be written and directed by Manish Jha (of Matrubhoomi fame).

Game over for Mobile ESPN
NEW YORK -- Mobile ESPN will be shut down by year's end after the service that launched with much fanfare at the Super Bowl couldn't bring in enough subscribers as a stand-alone service. It is a rare misstep for the self-proclaimed "worldwide leader in sports," which has changed sports TV and moved into the restaurant business with a network of ESPN Zones across the country. It even became a Gatorade flavor. Mobile ESPN is a mobile virtual network operator, a service that uses a cellular phone's network to deliver content to a subscriber base hungry for its multimedia offerings, in this case sports. But Mobile ESPN senior vp and general manager Manish Jha said Thursday that the company learned that most wireless customers don't change their service based on the entertainment options. Mobile ESPN customers had to pay as much as $199 for a specially designed handset as well as paying for the service.
