There are not many films in the Indian film scene that have explored futuristic post-apocalyptic stories. Kalki 2898 Ad counts among the original stories in the genre, but again, this Nag Ashwin film is fantasy fiction. The short film by Dibakar Banerjee in Ghost Stories on Netflix explored the zombie apocalypse briefly. It is the first time a Malayalam filmmaker has explored the futuristic theme based in India. Gaganachari, loosely translated to ‘celestial traveler,’ is about a group of men who live in the India of the 2040s and accidentally play host to an alien and find a way to make her feel comfortable.

Netflix’s new muddle mystery Murder Mubarak is like Agatha Christie on uppers. Or maybe we can just call it Knives Ouch and be done with it. Homi Adajania, the wizard of wackiness, loves to play around with genres.
He also loves to cast Dimple Kapadia as these very strange women who give eccentricity a bad name. In Murder Mubarak Dimple plays Cookie a well, kookie high-society creature who dresses up like Elton John and thinks herself hysterically classy. She is of course one of the murder suspects—how she could not, our wintry Bobby!— and so is Tisca Chopra as Roshni Batra (affectionately known as ‘Rosh’) who flirts till it hurts and makes eyes at everything that moves. She also has the best line in the 2 hour 20 minutes of gruelling hedonism: “Rich people can’t even crack a joke”
Rosh’s joke being, “The poor must die.”

Directed by Homi Adajania, the Netflix 2024 film Murder Mubarak is a whodunnit comedy drama. Every movie or show in this genre is filled with a whole lot of characters who have more than one reason to commit the murder and are under the assumption they would get away with it. The presence of an investigating officer will only make the matter worse, as one of the many in the crowd will eventually be caught if the telltale signs are caught on to, and the cop will catch up to the clues and see through the criminal as he or she explains their side of the story. Murder Mubarak uses the same template with several characters who have enough and more motive to kill a person.
