Lopez is a filmmaker-hyphenate... a showrunner, a producer, a director, cinematographer, and lighting designer. The trademark of his shows are striking visuals, lighting and composition.
He was a director on the Emmy nominated, History Channel mini-series, The World Wars. As director of photography for The Men Who Built America, another 8 hour mini-series for the History Channel, he earned a primetime Emmy nomination.
Some of his other recent shows include Washington for History which debuted as one the most successful cable TV launches in several years, American Playboy: The Hugh Hefner Story, for Amazon, Season 1 of Roman Empire for Netflix, Jonestown: Terror in the Jungle for AMC/Sundance, Jerusalem for CNN, The Icons The Built America for History, and Liberty or Death: Boston Tea Party for Fox Networks.
Spike Lee executive produced his last feature film as DP, "The Girl is in Trouble," and it starred Wilmer Valderrama. For his work on "I Sell the Dead," starring Ron Perlman and Dominic Monaghan, López was awarded the Kodak Vision Award for Best Cinematographer at the Slamdance Film Festival. Variety magazine has described his work as "expert."
He has lensed concerts for Alicia Keys, Norah Jones, Mariah Carey, Harry Connick, Jr., Florence and the Machine, and the Jonas Brothers. Corporate/commercial clients include Pfizer, Pepsi, Taco Bell, Reeses, Christian Dior, Paul Mitchell, Sears, Bank of America, Philips Norelco, Sony, Kimberly-Clark, Nestle, Mastercard and Hersheys.
Before embarking on a career in TV, López worked for 7 years in the policy circles of Washington, DC. He worked as a congressional aide to Representative Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Executive Director of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, and a political appointee in the Clinton Administration. He holds degrees from Columbia University, Stanford University, and the University of Michigan. He is currently an Associate Professor in directing and producing at the Feirstein Graduate School of Cinema at Brooklyn College.
