This article contains Deep Water spoilers.
The breakout star of Adrian Lyne’s “erotic” thriller is a six-year-old girl who packs in more charisma than its leads put together. Grace Jenkins has just two IMDb credits to her name–Deep Water and a short called The New Nanny–but it’s safe to say she absolutely stole the show in a movie which also stars Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas. No mean feat.
Jenkins is adorable and she’s very funny. But we can’t help but think there is another hidden reading to Trixie’s part in the story, should you choose to examine it.
Ostensibly, Deep Water, based on the novel by Patricia Highsmith published in 1957, follows a dysfunctional married couple with a kid (Trixie) who drive each other crazy. Melinda (de Armas) flaunts lovers in front of her husband Vic (Affleck), who is sometimes infuriated, and...

Hulu’s buzzy new erotic thriller “Deep Water” debuted on March 18 and has been trending on Twitter ever since, thanks to a bizarre plot that feels like chunks were left on the cutting room floor, as well as the sultry performances of one-time real-life couple Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas. Variety has cobbled together some burning questions from some of the film’s most outrageous moments, along with helpful timestamps so we can unravel these mysteries together.
Warning: there are Spoilers for the entirety of “Deep Water” ahead, as well as some sexual language describing this very horny movie.

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Scott Thompson on Wbgr-fm on March 17th, reviewing “Deep Water,” featuring Ben Affleck in an adaptation of a Patricia Highsmith novel, and is streaming on Hulu beginning March 18th.
Rating: 3.0/5.0
Affleck is Vic, a retired software millionaire who is married to Melinda (Ana de Armas), a much younger woman who is also the mother of his daughter. Melinda is a tremendous flirt, in front of Vic, and has man friends that Vic says is part of their marriage arrangement. When one of Melinda’s friends drowns in their pool, everybody starts to point fingers – including suspicious author friend Don (Tracy Letts) – and many of those fingers are pointing at Vic.
“Deep Water” is streaming on Hulu starting March 18th. Featuring Ben Affleck, Ana De Armas, Tracy Letts, Rachel Blanchard and Grace Jenkins. Screenplay adapted by Zack Helm and Sam Levinson.

Two films go under the HeyUGuys Film Review-o-scope today, and they couldn’t be more different. Adrian Lyne (maestro of the Erotic Thriller) returns to the big screen after a couple of decades with Deep Water, starring Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas. Then HeyUGuys favourite Craig Roberts returns with his new film as director, The Phantom of the Open, starring Mark Rylance and written by Paddington man Simon Farnaby.
Linda Marric and Scott Davis took the plunge on these two film – here’s what they had to say.

So for the last couple of weeks, the box office has been dominated by the latest incarnation of a fabled comic book hero re-imagined, as many reviewers, including one from this site, noted as a dark (almost pitch-black) “noir” thriller. Ah, but there’s an element largely missing from it (no doubt to keep its PG-13 rating), which was a hallmark of many a classic “noir” and that’s a dangerous and often deadly sexual attraction. Yes, “the Bat” and “the Cat’ share a smooch and longing gazes, but there’s no fogging of the Batmobile windows. Now if you’re in the mood for that, this weekend sees the release of such a tawdry tale, set in the real world,...

There’s something missing from Adrian Lyne’s “Deep Water,” and it’s not just the body of Martin McRae, the last unfortunate rival to get a little too friendly with Vic Van Allen’s wife. Vic (Ben Affleck) and Melinda (Ana de Armas) have an open marriage, but her … distractions have a habit of disappearing, and so do pretty much all ties to recognizable human behavior in the “Fatal Attaction” director’s unexpectedly cool-headed adaptation of the 1957 Patricia Highsmith novel for Hulu. This erotic thriller is still sexy and plenty entertaining, mind you, but it’s just not very useful insofar as what it says about real relationships.
Late last century, Lyne had a long, successful run of portraying complex sexual dynamics through grown-up eyes, but it’s been 20 years since “Unfaithful” — two decades he spent fighting to get this film off the ground — and the now-octogenarian helmer’s...

In 1972, the ads for the late Peter Bogdanovich’s hilarious throwback “What’s Up, Doc?” promised, “It’s a screwball comedy. Remember those?” If Disney weren’t consigning “Deep Water” to its Hulu streaming service — the fate for most upcoming titles from the 20th Century and Searchlight shingles — they might well have posters that tease, “It’s an erotic thriller. Remember them?”
And who better to save Hollywood cinema from chaste franchises, stolid superheroes, and a general lack of horniness than director Adrian Lyne, returned from a two-decade hiatus to bring heavy breathing back to mainstream movies.
“Deep Water,” a Patricia Highsmith adaptation starring couple-at-the-time Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas, doesn’t invoke the beads of sweat that the genre’s best can manage, but it’s a pleasurably trashy reminder of the flashy fun that Lyne and his many imitators once regularly brought to the screen.

Gonna let you know right up front: Deep Water is not for me. But it’s not for you either, and it’s not for anyone who likes a well-written, well-directed, and well-cast motion picture. Yet like that proverbial car crash we’re always hearing about, it’s hard not to keep looking at it. Just 10 minutes in, it’s all too clear why this turgid “erotic” thriller — based on a novel by Patricia Highsmith, no less (The Talented Mr. Ripley) — was shoved off a theatrical release by 20th Century Studios and shuffled onto a Hulu premiere berth instead.
Ben Affleck plays Vic Van Allen, who’s fabulously wealthy due to his invention of a chip that the military uses in its battlefield drones. In other words, he’s invented something that helps kill people, as numerous characters remind him throughout the film, not that he cares what they think.
