BAFTA has confirmed plans to stop its separate Awards for the children’s media industry, and present them under the banner of the more high-profile Film, Games and TV Awards from 2025.
The end of the separate Children and Young People awards ceremony comes after what BAFTA itself described as a consistent drop in entries and engagement in recent years. The ceremony last took place in November 2022 after a two-year pause.
This move is to booster the British Film and TV Academy’s support for the children’s media industry and its ongoing learning programmes for the next generation of creatives.
A new brand is being formed – Young BAFTA – to incorporate its outreach programmes for children and young people, which will be steered by a new cross-industry Young BAFTA Advisory Group.
The Young BAFTA Advisory Group will be led by BAFTA board member and industry trailblazer Andrew Miller MBE, a disability...

Some of television’s most beloved (and reviled) children’s characters are headed to streaming. The first trailer for Netflix’s upcoming “Teletubbies” revival series has been released, promising a return to the long-running franchise’s bizarre world.
First created in 1997 by Anne Wood and Andrew Davenport, “Teletubbies” is a British children’s show aimed at toddlers. Named after the main characters — a bizarre quartet of multi-colored, toddler-like creatures with antennae on their heads and television screens on their bellies — the show follows them exploring and playing in the grassy landscape they call home. The original show ran for five seasons and over 300 episodes and developed a global following thanks to syndication in over 120 countries. Even outside of its target demographic, the show quickly became famous for its surreal tone and character designs, and attracted sometimes bizarre controversy — such as when televangelist Jerry Falwell accused one of the Teletubbies, Tinky Winky,...

Teletubbies co-creator Anne Wood has admitted that she is "sad" about the show getting a remake.
Wood said that she isn't fond of shows such as Danger Mouse and Clangers being remade for a new audience.
"I'm a bit sad," she told Radio Times. "It comes down to the times we're in - people feel safer remaking hits of the past rather than investing in something new."
Wood - who also produced In the Night Garden - continued: "There are such a lot of programmes being remade and I just feel the children's television industry is worth more than that.
"It would be nice if more encouragement was given to new work."
Wood's latest series Twirlywoos launches on CBeebies next week, while she has also been responsible for the likes of Roland Rat, Brum and Rosie & Jim.

The creator of kids TV show The Teletubbies said in a magazine interview that she will not watch a reboot of the series for a BBC channel and said she was "a bit sad" about the U.K. trend of remaking classic shows for children. Anne Wood told Radio Times magazine that she would not watch the new episodes, which are set to air on BBC kids network CBeebies later this year. "I couldn’t bring myself to" watching it, she said. "I mean I have nothing against them, it might be brilliant. They tell me they’ve got the best producer

Teletubbies creator Anne Wood has accused the BBC of "ghettoising" children's television. The BBC recently moved all children's programming away from BBC One and BBC Two to its digital channels Cbbc and CBeebies. The move is part of director general Mark Thompson's 'Delivering Quality First' proposal, which aims to cut millions from the budget by 2017 and reassess the BBC's output. Although she felt the move was "inevitable", Wood stated that it was "dismissive of children". She described the scheduling change as "cynical" and said that it gave a "completely different attitude to the one that scheduled Magic Roundabout before the 5.40pm news". "Children's shows have just become fodder, and as a practitioner, I feel very sad about that," she told Radio Times. Wood continued (more)...

Actor/director/writer/producer Edward Burns‘ next film Nice Guy Johnny has its first trailer. The drama stars Matt Bush, who I loved in Adventureland, alongside Kerry Bishe, Anne Wood, Max Baker and Edward Burns himself. It looks beautifully shot, but wish the trailer had a touch more of the story. Check out for yourself below via Apple and let me know what you think.
Plot: Sure, she can be a little overbearing sometimes, but baby-faced Johnny Rizzo loves his fiancee Claire, and he made her a promise: by the time he’s 25-years-old, he’ll trade his current dream job as a local sports talk radio host (even if it is the 2 a.m. slot) for something that’ll pay bigger bucks. And Johnny’s nothing, if not a man of his word. Now he’s flying to New York to interview for some snoozeville job that Claire’s well-to-do father set up.

Todd McKenney has been labelled a distant father figure to his 2-year-old daughter Charlotte. The source told The Daily Telegraph: "It has to be that way. Todd (more)...

Kids TV licensers play new game
The British kids TV import Teletubbies created a new paradigm for preschool show launches in 1998 when it caused a sensation in the press and at retail. Last month, Teletubbies creator Anne Wood launched her latest show, Boohbah, with a bit less fanfare -- and with no toys immediately available on the U.S. market. As the yearly American International Toy Fair continues today and Wednesday in New York, changes in the industry are a hot topic. The difference between the United States launch of Boohbah in January and that of Teletubbies six years ago -- both on PBS -- illustrates overall changes in the licensing of entertainment properties. " 'Tubbies' occurred at a unique moment in time," said Andrew Kerr, vp marketing and strategic alliances for Teletubbies and Boohbah producer Ragdoll. "With 'Boohbah, ' it's a different show at a different time. It's a different universe now." Kerr refers not only to the children's TV landscape, but particularly to the worlds of licensing and retail that are a critical component of any show launch's business plan today.
