Network executives once came to the upfronts on a mission to get advertisers excited about a handful of new series coming in the fall. This year, TV’s big players took a T-shirt cannon approach.

Every one of the major presentations during the May 13-15 sprint in midtown Manhattan — NBCUniversal, Fox, Disney, Amazon, Warner Bros. Discovery and Netflix — emphasized the breadth of the company’s content offerings. Call it the everything-everywhere-all-at-once strategy for the streaming age.

As always, common themes emerged across the week. “Connections” was the buzziest of buzzwords used by executives pitching their hearts out from the stage. Without question, the song of Upfronts ’24, the one heard at most if not all events, was Beyoncé’s “Texas Hold ’Em.”

After sorting through the firehose of shows and spin, here are a few trends that stood out this year.

1) Star-Power Surge

Last year, the writers strike kept boldface names from appearing at the upfronts.

Mindy Kaling got right to the point at the top of the Warner Bros Discovery presentation Wednesday by joking how her show The Sex Lives of College Girls is “filled with smoking hot guys who run around campus topless.”

“It’s a Max show, not a BBC show,” she said.

Amazon Prime Video made its first upfront presentation to advertisers on Tuesday in New York, with the streamer bringing out some of its biggest stars to break some news while touting its original series, film and sports offerings.

Amazon took over Pier 36 in Manhattan, which included a large installation dedicated to Amazon shows like “Fallout” and “The Summer I Turned Pretty” as well as movies like “Road House” and their various sports offerings like “Thursday Night Football.”

Amazon’s first major upfront started half an hour late — the long line to get in was referenced several times by Amazon MGM Studios head Jen Salke and even “You’re Cordially Invited” stars Reese Witherspoon and Will Ferrell. But once inside, advertisers were presented a star-studded litany of projects and news designed to make a huge splash in the marketplace.

The legendary racer will leave NBC Sports’ NASCAR team, where he has held forth as a color commentator since 2018, in favor of lending his expertise to both Warner Bros. Discovery and Amazon. The two companies struck new pacts with the racing league last year in agreements that spread NASCAR properties around the media landscape. NASCAR remains with both its current rightsholders, NBC and Fox.

The fifth installment of the syndicated daytime talk show will build on the success of Season 4, which featured interviews with Angela Bassett, Erykah Badu, Miranda Lambert, Halle Bailey, Dale Earnhardt. Jr., Billy Porter and Tanya Tucker, among others. During the fourth season, the show became the season’s most improved daytime talk show in terms of ratings among network or syndicated series, according to Nielsen live-plus-seven-day figures of minutes viewed.

As of late May, the “Tamron Hall Show” experienced growth both ratings-wise and in terms of total viewers for the 33rd consecutive week, with its 0.68 rating during the week of May 29 marking a 10% boost when compared to the same week a year ago, when the program averaged a 0.62 rating, according to live-plus-same-day figures from Nielsen’s syndicated program ranker. “Tamron Hall” has been renewed for a fifth season with leading broadcast groups including Hearst, Scripps, Nexstar, Cox and Gray, ABC News president Kim Godwin announced Thursday. The groups join the ABC Owned Television Stations Group, which previously announced a two-year renewal of the Daytime Emmy-winning nationally syndicated talk show through the 2023-2024 season.

“Having this incredible vote of confidence in the show speaks to the great work the Ths team does every day,” Hall said of the news. “Wherever I go, I hear from members of our loyal audience, known as the Tam Fam, about how they connect with our topics, our guests and our breakthrough moments with some of the biggest celebrities in the world. Dale Earnhardt Jr. is stepping out of the driver’s seat and behind the camera for USA Network’s unscripted series “Race for the Championship.” The athlete will executive produce the series, premiering Sept. 1, giving viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the drivers and teams competing in the NASCAR Cup Series.

ESPN has clambered aboard the Nft bandwagon: The sports giant is going into business with Tom Brady, angling to sell fans on the idea of owning a digital piece of the famed NFL quarterback’s legacy.

ESPN inked a multiyear deal with Autograph, the Nft startup co-founded by Brady, to release its first nonfungible tokens. NFTs provide a way to authenticate ownership of digital content, using distributed blockchain networks — and media and entertainment companies have flocked to NFTs as a way to generate incremental revenue and boost fan loyalty.

Thirty-nine Nascar drivers and their crews pushed Bubba Wallace’s car to the front of Talladega Superspeedway’s field before a race today in a show of support for the circuit’s only black driver one day after a noose was discovered hanging in his garage stall.

In a video posted on Nascar’s YouTube page, a narrator calls racing “the great equalizer” and says, “No one is white, black, brown or yellow. They are all racers and they are all our heroes.”

According to ESPN, the show of solidarity just before a race came about after driver Jimmie Johnson said in an interview that he would stand with Wallace during the national anthem. Driver Kevin Harvick then suggested that the drivers should push Wallace’s car to the front of the field. ESPN reports that Wallace “climbed out of his car and wept.”

Ashton Kutcher’s unscripted series Going From Broke has been handed a second season by Crackle Plus as the AVOD service unveils its latest slate of originals.

The digital platform is leaning heavily on scripted and non-scripted series from its sister company, Landmark Studio, which was set up by owner Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment and former Idw Entertainment President David Ozer last year.

The slate was announced as part of its NewFronts advertising presentation.

Going From Broke, which the company said has scored 16M views, will return for a second ten-part run in the first quarter of 2021. From executive producer Kutcher, the series sheds light on the national crisis of student debt and offers practical solutions for young people to go from broke. Produced by Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment, it is hosted by Chegg CEO Dan Rosensweig.

On the scripted side, Crackle Plus has unveiled four originals.

The Confederate flag has long been a common sight at Nascar races, particularly in the infield, where some fans fly the polarizing symbol alongside the U.S. flag and banners for their favorite drivers. NBCUniversal’s streaming service, Peacock, is hatching a new short-form series called “The At-Home Variety Show.”

Beginning Monday, May 11, at 7 p.m. Et, the series will stream every weekday for four weeks. “Family Guy” creator Seth MacFarlane will introduce each segment, which will generally be under 10 minutes and will feature performances from NBCU stars including Jane Lynch, Soleil Moon-Frye, Fred Armisen, Kevin Hart and more.

Peacock will donate funds to the Feeding America, Americares and United Way charities, which are helping those affected by the coronavirus pandemic, including essential workers. Viewers will be encouraged to donate to the charities via Peacock’s website.

Peacock will begin streaming The At-Home Variety Show, a short-form weekday series featuring stars from the NBCUniversal family to aid in Covid-19 relief efforts. Each installment will be introduced by Seth MacFarlane in his first major NBCU gig since the Family Guy creator and star signed a mega overall deal with the company in January.

The At-Home Variety Show kicks off today, May 11 at 7 Pm Et and will run for four weeks. MacFarlane, who also is a Grammy-nominated singer, will introduce each installment, most of which will be under 10 minutes.
