Richard Osman may be turning his hit novel The Thursday Murder Club into a Netflix feature, but it has not stopped him from roasting the streamer’s chief executive.

During a jolly curtain closer at the Rts London Convention, Osman and his The Rest Is Entertainment podcast co-host Marina Hyde, cast a satirical eye over the day’s speakers.

Osman poked fun at comments made by Ted Sarandos during his opening keynote, in which the Netflix co-ceo shared the secrets of streaming success to an audience of British television luminaries.

Sarandos added that “there’s no reason we couldn’t take 25%” audience share in the UK, which would more than double Netflix’s current viewership of 10%.

Amblin is producing the adaptation of Osman’s bestselling series of murder mystery novels, and the project has assembled a stacked cast.

Spielberg and Osman were pictured with Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley, Celia Imrie, who star as friends in a retirement home who gather to solve murders for fun, but find themselves caught in a real case.

Per Deadline's reporting, Withnail & I star Richard E. Grant and Lucifer's Tom Ellis lead the latest round of additions to the buzzy Brit-led crime caper.

Hailing from writer-director Columbus and backed by Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment, there's some serious creative firepower behind Netflix's take on Osman's tale of crime-solving pensioners caught up in a real high-stakes murder mystery. As has already been confirmed, The Thursday Murder Club's central quartet consists of Helen Mirren's ex-spy Elizabeth, Pierce Brosnan's former union man Ron, Ben Kingsley's retired psychiatrist Ibrahim, and Celia Imrie's kindly former nurse Joyce.

Whether The Thursday Murder Club turns out to be good, bad or indifferent, there’s no doubting the strength of its cast. Among the stars already announced, we can now add Withnail himself, Richard E Grant, and veteran British actor Paul Freeman, whose signature roles include Belloq in Raiders Of The Lost Ark.

The murder mystery adaptation’s other new additions, according to Deadline, are Tom Ellis, Geoff Bell, Sarah Niles and Ingrid Oliver – the latter perhaps best known as recurring character Petronella Osgood in Doctor Who. Danny Dyer may be better known these days as Mick Carter in EastEnders, but before that, he’d been a steady presence in British film for over two decades, from his debut in Justin Kerrigan’s Human Traffic through The Football Factory and Severance.

The one thing Dyer had never done was lead a sitcom – until now. Mr Bigstuff is created and written by Ryan Sampson, who’s perhaps best known for starring alongside Nicholas Lyndhurst and Celia Imrie in BBC sitcom After You’ve Gone, and for co-starring in ITV2 sitcom Plebs.

CBS Studios and the BBC’s period drama series “King & Conqueror” has revealed additional cast members, including “The Crown’s” Luther Ford and “Game of Thrones” actor Joseph Mawle, as it begins production in Iceland.

UK-based Carnaby Sales and Distribution has acquired international rights to Connor O’Hara’s debut feature Kindling, which it will debut at Cannes next week.

Kindling is produced by Mark Foligno, who was an executive producer on The King’s Speech, and Jamie Gamache; for UK companies Haymarket Films, Lowkey Films and Hyprr Films.

The UK film tells the story of a young man with testicular cancer who decides to turn his final summer into a celebration of life, love and friendship. The film is based on O’Hara’s proof-of-concept short Infinite starring George MacKay.

Universal has unveiled the first official trailer for a new psychological thriller from Blumhouse titled You Should Have Left, based on the novel of the same name by German writer Daniel Kehlmann. Actors Ruth Wilson and Clarke Peters took the dais at Ccxp to talk about HBO fantasy drama His Dark Materials, based on the best-selling novels by Philip Pullman. The two went into detail about their characters and how it has been like working on such an ambitious story about Dafne Keen’s Lyra, who, after searching for her kidnapped friend, uncovers a sinister plot involving stolen children and becomes a quest to understand a mysterious phenomenon called Dust.

Keen wasn’t able to attend the panel and sent a message of thanks via a video before the actors talked about the show, which tackles intense and heavy topics and themes is just as relevant to children as it is to adults. “We shouldn’t underestimate children,” said Peters. Actress Stana Katic's series "Absentia" has got a greenlight for a third season.

Amazon has given a formal season three pickup to its thriller "Absentia", which is executive produced by Katic. It will debut in 2020 exclusively on Prime Video in the Us, as well as in select markets globally, reports deadline.com.

In addition, Geoff Bell and Josette Simon are joining the cast, while Will Pascoe has been tapped as executive producer and showrunner.

“Absentia” centers on FBI agent Emily Byrne (Katic), and the new season opens three months after the dramatic events of season two with Emily nearing the end of her suspension from the FBI and working hard to be the best possible mother to her son. Everything is upended when one of Nick Durand’s (Patrick Heusinger) criminal cases hits too close to home and threatens the lives of the family Emily is desperately trying to hold together. It’s a dangerous journey that will take Emily far from Boston testing her like never before and forcing her to learn to trust again, to love again, and to finally realize her true place in the world.

Absentia has been renewed for a third season — and with a few changes.

Filming on the third season of Absentia is well underway in Sofia, Bulgaria, with new executive producer/showrunner Will Pascoe, who succeeds Season 2 showrunner Samantha Corbin-Miller. Geoff Bell (Kingsman: The Secret Service) and Josette Simon (Wonder Woman) have joined the cast.

HBO and the BBC have set premiere dates for the big-budget adaptation of His Dark Materials.

The British public broadcaster will air it first on Sunday November 3 and HBO, which co-produced the fantasy epic, will air it in a Monday night slot on November 4. The WarnerMedia-owned broadcaster will also air it internationally where it has networks and streaming services.

The trio are among those to sign up as voice actors for the the Philip Pullman adaptation, written by Jack Thorne and produced by Bad Wolf.

The “hot priest” is joining His Dark Materials… Fleabag actor Andrew Scott has signed up for the HBO and BBC co-production.

Scott is set to play Colonel John Parry, the father of Will Parry, who is being played by Amir Wilson. Parry, who is also known as Doctor Stanislaus Grumman or Jopari, accidentally travelled to Lyra’s world where he became a renowned scholar and shaman. His dæmon was called Sayan Kötör and had the form of an osprey.

He joins the second season of the drama with season one scheduled to air later this year.

The creative team behind His Dark Materials has called the Philip Pullman adaptation a “challenging” show to write but the “quintessential” HBO/BBC co-production.

Writer Jack Thorne and exec producer Jane Tranter, who runs production company Bad Wolf, spoke about the big-budget fantasy epic alongside stars including Dafne Keen, James McAvoy, Ruth Wilson and Lin-Manuel Miranda at its TCA press tour panel.

Thorne admitted that he wrote several dozens drafts for the first episode of the show, which is set to launch on HBO in October. “We wrote papers to ourselves about all the different ideas in the show. We wanted to do a Ph.D. in Phillip Pullman and we tried to do a Ph.D. in His Dark Materials. I wrote 46 drafts of episode one in order to find a way to tell this story as elegantly as possible. [Pullman’s] denseness is a blessing and a curse; it’s so exciting.

The BBC has committed to a second season of Philip Pullman’s “His Dark Materials,” with the first season still in production.

“We are making two series of Philip Pullman’s ‘[His] Dark Materials,’” BBC director general Tony Hall said Tuesday during an appearance before a government committee. “The cost per episode is high – it’s really ambitious.”

Based on Pullman’s bestselling trilogy of young-adult fantasy novels, the show is produced by Bad Wolf with New Line Cinema for the BBC, in association with BBC Studios Distribution and Anton Capital Entertainment. It is currently in production at Bad Wolf’s studios in Cardiff, Wales. Like the first season, the second season will consist of eight episodes.
