Ahead of the Showtime and Paramount+ merger, Paramount Global is cleaning house. “American Gigolo” and “Let the Right One In,” two drama series that premiered last year, have been canceled at the channel, IndieWire has confirmed.
In addition, Showtime will no longer be proceeding with the series “Three Women,” starring Shailene Woodley, Betty Gilpin, DeWanda Wise, and Gabrielle Creevy. The series, which finished principal production, will be shopped to other outlets, and “American Gigolo” and “Let the Right One In” are also reportedly being shopped.
Paramount Global announced the integration of Showtime into Paramount+ across both streaming and linear television on January 30, revealing it will occur “later this year.” Rather than just offering Showtime on the Paramount+ app, Showtime Ott and Showtime linear will be rebranded to “Paramount+ with Showtime,” and the Showtime Ott and Anytime apps will be shut down, IndieWire is told. Showtime is thinning its roster of scripted originals in the wake of its consolidation with Paramount+.
Scripted dramas Let the Right One In and American Gigolo have both been canceled and the Shailene Woodley-led adaptation of Three Women is no longer moving forward at the premium cable network. The latter series, which has already completed production, is being shopped to other outlets.
Both American Gigolo and Let the Right One In had been in the works for years before debuting in 2022 on the Paramount Global-backed premium cable network. Neither series lit the ratings on fire and reviews were mixed, at best.
“We are extremely proud of this series and of the outstanding work by Demián Bichir, Madison Taylor Baez, Anika Noni Rose, our showrunner Andrew Hinderaker and his fellow executive producers, and the entire cast and crew. We would like to thank all of them and our partners at Tomorrow Studios,...

On September 9, 2022, Showtime premiered “American Gigolo,” a direct sequel to the 1980 Richard Gere film of the same name. Julian Kaye is fifteen years older and on a mission to seek the truth about the frame that sent him to prison all those years ago and reclaim his life. The cast of this sequel series includes Jon Bernthal as Kaye along with Gretchen Mol, Wayne Brady, and Rosie O’Donnell. With a score of just 24 on Rotten Tomatoes, what exactly did critics say?

“American Gigolo,” Showtime’s “present-day reimagining” of Paul Schrader’s 1980 erotic drama of the same name, first began as an idea gestating at Jerry Bruckheimer Television in 2014. According to executive producer Jonathan Littman, the show — which stars Jon Bernthal in the role originated by Richard Gere — once had Jared Leto attached to play the suave, high-end escort.
Not entirely a reboot and certainly not a remake, the series picks up 15 years after Julian Kaye (Bernthal) was framed for a murder he didn’t commit. Following his exoneration, Julian must once navigate the treacherous world of L.A. elites, all the while navigating who betrayed him in the first place.

Showtime got a little bit lucky with The Man Who Fell to Earth. The sci-fi drama took a title that means very little to modern audiences and a story that didn’t really require extending into a new era, but creators Jenny Lumet and Alex Kurtzman had a specific and contemporary tale they wanted to tell — and, in Chiwetel Ejiofor, a fully committed leading man giving a wild, hilarious, soulful central performance.
Perhaps owing to the arbitrary attempt to build around the title of a 1976 film (and a 1963 novel), The Man Who Fell to Earth doesn’t appear to have generated any buzz at all and Ejiofor didn’t even crack the outer edge of the Emmy conversation.

Rosie O’Donnell is discussing why she ignored requests to not play her A League of Their Own character as queer and the sudden exit of American Gigolo showrunner David Hollander, which she describes as “weird” and “unnerving.”
A new interview with Vanity Fair sees the comedian, talk show host and actor reflecting on the impact of A League of Their Own and the new LGBTQ+ inclusive Prime Video series of the same name from Abbi Jacobson and Will Graham. During the discussion, O’Donnell says that she played her character, third basewoman Doris Murphy, as gay — even if it wasn’t directly addressed in Penny Marshall’s 1992 movie.

In his review of “American Gigolo,” the always-astute Roger Ebert said the feverishly stylish picture was really, at its core, a portrait of isolation. “The whole movie has a winning sadness about it,” Ebert wrote. “Take away the story’s sensational aspects and what you have is a study in loneliness.” The emptiness haunting Julian Kay (Richard Gere) is central to the story of a sex worker who adorns himself in the sleekest ’80s couture and prides himself on knowing how to please his clients, but falls down a perilous rabbit hole where transactions can no longer save him; he needs a real connection, and Julian’s not only short on bonafide friends, but he may not even know what one looks like. Set against the superficiality of Los Angeles’ hottest clubs and richest denizens, “American Gigolo” captured not just a man going through the motions until the motions were their only meaning,...

With its pulsing burble of Blondie music and its chilly aesthetic, the 1980 Paul Schrader film “American Gigolo” is a showpiece of what would soon be the Reagan decade. Some 42 years later, a TV adaptation feels lost in time, and searching for an argument for its existence.
Starring Jon Bernthal and with a pilot written and directed by “Ray Donovan’s” David Hollander (whose ties to Paramount Television Studios were severed during production), “American Gigolo” is lead-footed, and prurient rather than hot.
And Bernthal seems at sea here, an unusual look for a star whose coiled charisma has elsewhere served him well. His Julian Kaye — whose name is shared with Richard Gere’s character in Schrader’s movie — emerges from a 15-year sentence we’re told happened about a decade and a half ago, but nothing about Julian’s world feels of the present day, or of Earth. Over 30 years after "American Gigolo" launched Richard Gere's career, the film is getting a TV adaptation with another suave leading man in the starring role. Jon Bernthal is taking over the reins as Julian Kaye, a former male escort who spent years being the object of affection until a murder charge landed him in prison. The series almost works as a direct sequel to the original film: picking up 15 years later, Julian is exonerated when new evidence comes to light proving he did not commit the murder that got him put away. But while trying to get back into his old scene, he realizes that picking up where he left off isn't as simple as he'd like. So he does as TV characters so often do, and gets to work trying to solve the murder himself.

Sex sells, but murder is where the real money is.
Jon Bernthal stars as Julian Kaye, an ex-escort who sets out to exonerate himself after serving 15 years for a murder charge for the death of his former client. Kaye finds former lover Michelle (Gretchen Mol) for answers, while Detective Sunday (Rosie O’Donnell) tries to piece together what really happened at the crime scene.
The Showtime series reimagines the Kaye character originated by Richard Gere in Paul Schrader’s 1980 film “American Gigolo.”
The drama also stars Lizzie Brocheré as Isabelle, the heiress to a ring of sex workers; Gabriel Labelle as Johnny, a younger version of Julian; Leland Orser as Richard Stratton, a self-made tech billionaire; and guest star Wayne Brady as Julian’s best friend and mentor, Lorenzo.
Lead star Bernthal previously told GQ that he was even surprised to be cast in the lead role for the upcoming series.

Exclusive Updated: Production on Showtime’s drama series American Gigolo has been paused again, this time for at least two weeks, as the series’ co-executive producer David Bar Katz has exited the Paramount TV Studios-produced series. His departure comes three weeks after the Paramount network and TV studio severed ties with the series’ developer, writer, director and executive producer David Hollander following an investigation into allegations of misconduct and almost two weeks after The Offer executive producers Nikki Toscano and Russell Rothberg joined the series as consulting producers.
Toscano, a seasoned showrunner who ran The Offer, is said to have taken the reins of American Gigolo, with Rothberg providing support. The duo are expected to use the two weeks to work on prepping Episode 8, which is getting a script. The series, headlined by Jon Bernthal, originally had received a 10-episode order. I hear that plan has now changed, and the next episode to film,...

Sophia Bush’s “Good Sam” and Pete Holmes’ “How We Roll” have been canceled after just one season each at CBS, Variety has learned.
“Good Sam” was a medical drama that follows Dr. Sam Griffith (Bush), a gifted heart surgeon who excels in her new leadership role as chief of surgery after her renowned boss falls into a coma. When her former boss wakes up months later demanding to resume his duties, Sam is tasked with supervising this egotistical expert with a scalpel who never acknowledged her stellar talent. Complicating matters, the caustic and arrogant Dr. Rob “Griff” Griffith (Jason Isaacs) also happens to be her father. As Griff defies Sam’s authority and challenges her medical expertise, the big question becomes whether this father and daughter will ever be able to mend their own relationship as expertly as they heal the hearts of their patients.

“Magnum P.I.,” “Good Sam,” and “How We Roll” will not be moving forward at CBS, TheWrap has learned.
Both “Good Sam” and “How We Roll” were canceled after just one season. “Magnum P.I.” just wrapped up its fourth season.
In fact, “How We Roll” premiered at the end of March. The sitcom opened to a fairly strong 0.34 rating among adults 18-49 and 4.2 million total viewers, according to Nielsen. However, it appeared to be somewhat doomed after executive producer David Hollander was ousted following an investigation into unspecified misconduct.
“Good Sam” premiered in January to a weak start with a 0.3 demo rating and 2.6 million total viewers. The second episode fared even worse with a 0.2 demo rating and 2.4 million total viewers. That’s about on par with the rest of the season, in terms of live + same day ratings, according to Nielsen.

Exclusive: The Offer executive producers Nikki Toscano and Russell Rothberg have come on board Showtime’s upcoming series American Gigolo, from Paramount Television Studios. They will serve as consulting producers, working alongside Executive Producer David Bar Katz.
The move comes a week after the Paramount network and TV studio severed ties with the series’ developer, writer, director and executive producer David Hollander following an investigation into allegations of misconduct. As Deadline reported, Katz stepped up in the immediate aftermath of Hollander’s exit. Production was then suspended both over the leadership change as well as an actor being temporarily unavailable. Filming has now resumed, with Toscano and Rothberg working closely with Katz to steer the show.
Toscano is an experienced showrunner who has an overall deal at Paramount TV Studios, she most recently ran the studio’s Paramount+ limited series The Offer, about the making of The Godfather.

Exclusive: Showtime and Paramount Television Studios have suspended production for four days on upcoming series American Gigolo, a reboot of the popular 1980 movie. The move comes a couple of days after the Paramount network and TV studio severed ties with the series’ developer, writer, director and executive producer David Hollander following an investigation into allegations of misconduct.
Production on the series, headlined by Jon Bernthal, was originally slated to continue following Hollander’s ouster, with one of Hollander’s top lieutenants, believed to be co-executive producer David Bar Katz, stepping in as showrunner. The American Gigolo series, produced by Paramount TV Studios with Jerry Bruckheimer Television, has about two episodes left to shoot from its 10-episode order, I hear.
In addition to the leadership change, I hear the production shutdown is being attributed to an actor being temporarily unavailable. The reasons are unclear but I have not heard that it’s Covid-related.

Just two days after former “Ray Donovan” producer David Hollander was fired as showrunner on Showtime’s “American Gigolo” series, he is also off CBS’ “How We Roll,” should it come back for a second season, a source familiar with the situation told TheWrap on Monday.
Hollander executive produced the Pete Holmes-starring, bowling-centered midseason comedy, which recently wrapped production on its first season.
An investigation into unspecified misconduct on Hollander’s part led Paramount Television Studios, which produces “American Gigolo,” to terminate his overall deal.
“David Hollander is no longer on the drama series ‘American Gigolo’ and Paramount Television Studios no longer has a producing relationship with him,” a spokesperson told TheWrap on Saturday, but declined to comment further.
Reps for CBS and producers CBS Studios, which are under the same umbrella as Paramount Television Studios and Showtime, declined to comment.

If CBS comedy series How We Roll is renewed for a second season, it will return without executive producer David Hollander. Production on the Pete Holmes sitcom’s freshman season has been completed but if the series gets renewed for Season 2, Hollander won’t be involved, the network and How We Roll producer CBS Studios said in a response to an inquiry by Deadline.
As Deadline reported Saturday, Hollander, the developer, director, executive producer and showrunner of the upcoming Showtime series American Gigolo, produced by sibling Paramount Television Studios, was let go from the reboot of the popular 1980 movie after an investigation into allegations of misconduct. Jon Bernthal has played a cop, a superhero, a hitman, and a zombie killer. But what “The Wolf of Wall Street” alum hasn’t fully embodied, according to him, is being a sex object.
“The Punisher” star told GQ that he is still surprised to be cast in Showtime’s “American Gigolo” series, based on Paul Schrader’s 1980 film about a male escort who is framed for murder. Richard Gere originally played the role, which instantly made Gere an icon.
“I do not believe that I possess any kind of natural sex appeal,” Bernthal said. “I’ve always looked at myself as this weird-looking guy.”
Filming the series requires Bernthal to don “a fancy suit and some shoes that hurt my feet,” plus a “goofy” shirt and a handful of gold chains to play sex worker Julian Kaye.

The end has arrived for Showtime’s Ray Donovan series. The popular drama, which ran for seven seasons, wrapped things up Friday night with a two-hour movie that answered a few questions on what made Ray the man he is today.
A film version was necessary thanks to the surprise cancellation after the Season 7 finale, which left fans, star Liev Schreiber, and showrunner David Hollander hanging. After a huge outcry, the decision was made to tie the outstanding threads together and reveal whether the Donovans stand together or go down swinging. After all, Ray doesn’t leave loose ends.
For the uninitiated, Ray Donovan is a professional “fixer” who handles the messy details of illegal activities to protect celebrity clients. The drama also brought out the interactons between Ray’s children, brothers, wife and the menacing patriarch of the family, Mickey, played by Jon Voight, who gets an unexpected release from prison.
