I had a ball doing Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd. My kids (Farhan and Zoya Akhtar) are involved with it. I’ve a very small part.

You had never been paired with Boman Irani before?

Boman plays this Christian Goanese guy. I play this Muslim woman. He plays a brash man. My character is more genteel. I love my look in this film. I kept telling the clothes designer Arjun Bhasin that after this film, he won’t be getting any more assignments. All of us are so atrociously dressed by design.

What are your current projects?

There are a few films that are completely ready for release, like Punjab 95 with Diljit, directed by Honey Trehan and produced by Ronnie Screwvala’s RSVP. The Rapist with Konkana Sen, directed by Aparna Sen, produced by Sameer Nair’s Applause. This is the one I am really excited about. It is a complex role of a man dealing with his wife’s rape.

The Rapist is an exceptional film. What was it like working with Sameer Nair and Aparna Sen?

Aparna is one of the few female directors I’ve worked with. The other was Reema Kagti for Honey Travels Pvt Ltd. The Rapist is a very sensitive exploration of the trauma of rape. Konkona is exceptional. Hats off to Sameer Nair and Applause for backing this game-changing project.

Subhash K Jha returns his focus to the brilliant Gully Boy, Zoya Akhtar’s ode to the underground hip-hop scene starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt. Zoya also delves deep and shares insight into the film, including casting, filming, and what she feels is the essence of the film.

Following Fernanda Torres’ surprise Golden Globe win last Sunday, Walter Salles’ political bio-drama “I’m Still Here” is picking up steam going into Oscars voting as it has now also received the Fipresci Prize for Best International Feature Film at the 36th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival. Salles’ film is based on Marcelo Rubens Paiva’s 2015 memoir of the same name and follows a mother and activist as she comes to terms with the forced disappearance of her husband, a dissident politician fighting against the dictatorship in Brazil at the time.

Indian director Reema Kagti admits that living in Mumbai and working in the Mumbai film industry for so long tends to make people a “little jaded,” not to mention a “little full of yourself.”

“The first thing about Nasir that really hit me was as a director. He had no agenda. He was just making films for the love of making films, and to me, that was very humbling,” she said, speaking at the Variety Lounge presented by Film AlUla at the Red Sea Film Festival in Saudi Arabia. “And I think at some point I kind of just took that on and followed my instinct and did whatever I did just for the love of making this film.

The Oscar-winning filmmaker will preside over the Jeddah, Saudi Arabia film festival’s features-competition jury this year, Red Sea announced on Thursday via Instagram. Lee’s impressive filmography includes “Do the Right Thing” (1989), “Malcolm X” (1992), and “BlacKkKlansman” (2019), for which he won the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar. “BlacKkKlansman” was also nominated for Lee’s directing and for Best Picture.

Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea International Film Festival has added Thierry Fremaux’s Lumiere: Le Cinema to its international film lineup.

The Cannes Film Festival artistic director’s sequel to Lumiere: The Adventure Begins takes a look at the birth of cinema with a look at over 100 newly restored films. Fremaux, who is also director of the Lumiere Institute in Lyon, will be in Jeddah for his film’s screenings.

The Red Sea International Film Festival (Rsiff) has announced details of this year’s selection of films screening in its prestigious Red Sea: Competition strand, the projects which will vie for the coveted Yusr Awards.

The Competition values all cinematic forms, from narrative to animation and documentary, featuring films from Asia, Africa, and across the Arab world. Mahdi Fleifel‘s To A Land Unknown will have its Mena premiere, a powerful drama that traces the heartbreaking story of two Palestinian refugees stranded in Athens that received funding from Rsiff. Also debuting as Mena premieres are Sima’s Song directed by Afghan filmmaker Roya Sadat, a drama that explores the evolution of women’s rights during the Russian occupation in the 1970s, and Indian director Reema Kagti’s Superboys of Malegaon, a critically acclaimed comedy based on the true story of a group of amateur filmmakers who come together to create a film that honors their city.

The Red Sea Film Festival has unveiled the bulk of the line-up for its fourth edition, which will showcase 120 films from 81 territories from December 5 to 14 in the port city of Jeddah.

The festival will open with Egyptian director Karim Shenawy’s The Tale Of Daye’s Family (aka Light) about an 11-year-old Nubian albino boy with a beautiful voice, who faces adversity due to his unique appearance.

Abandoned by his father and bullied by his peers, he dreams of following in the footsteps of his idol, singer and actor Mohamed Mounir. When he gets a chance to audition for The Voice, Daye and his family embark on a perilous 1,000-mile journey from Southern Egypt to Cairo.

Michael Gracey’s semi-biographical feature Better Man, inspired by Robbie Williams and portraying the pop icon as a chimpanzee, will close the festival.

Honors for and onstage appearances by Viola Davis and Egyptian star Mona Zaki (Perfect Strangers, Flight 404, Aserb: The Squadron, The Spider), Johnny Depp’s new movie as a director and a biopic about Robbie Williams will be part of this year’s Red Sea International Film Festival (Rsiff) in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, organizers said Monday.

They also unveiled the competition lineup for the fest’s fourth edition. Organizers said that the overall lineup features 49 world and international premieres, also highlighting that six female filmmakers will be featured in the competition program.

Among the 15 competition titles announced are Reema Kagti’s Superboys of Malegaon, which bowed at the Toronto Film Festival, and Kurdwin Ayub’s Moon, which had its world premiere at the Locarno Film Festival where it won the special jury prize.

The Rsiff on Monday also added several galas to its lineup, plus unveiled its International Spectacular and its Families & Children programs.

Indian producer, Excel Entertainment co-founder Ritesh Sidhwani, is preparing for the global rollout of “Superboys of Malegaon,” which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and screened at the BFI London Film Festival.

The film is an Amazon MGM Studios, Excel Entertainment and Tiger Baby production. Directed by Reema Kagti, it tells the story of a group of friends in Malegaon, India, who create parody films with limited resources. Sidhwani greenlit the project over 15 years ago after hearing about the real-life inspiration behind the story.

“It’s basically gives you that kind of hope, that, if you can dream of something and you have a goal in life, and you just keep pursuing it, and you can achieve it,” Sidhwani told Variety.

Following its festival run, “Superboys of Malegaon” is set for a theatrical release in India and international markets, including non-diaspora territories, before streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

“I play one of the leading characters. It’s set in the future, and it’s very exciting for me, because I got to be part of like a sci-fi horror, psychological thriller show. And all these elements are basically things that excite me the most as an actor,” Gourav tells Variety.

“My knowledge about sci-fi is very limited, but psychological thriller and horror is my go-to genre to watch, also as an audience,” he adds.

The company has just unveiled Taira Malaney’s “Turtle Walker,” a documentary chronicling the extraordinary journey of conservationist Satish Bhaskar, who walked nearly the entire coast of India in his efforts to protect sea turtles.
