Playing a wretchedly unhappy scion of a criminal family in Kanu Behl’s crime drama Titli in 2015, Shashank Arora defined a new-age protagonist who was just a face in the crowd until you rubbed him the wrong way.
In Rock On 2 , Farhan Akhtar, Arjun Rampal, and Purab Kohli rightly hogged the limelight. It was the enormously talented Shashank Arora who, as the new recruit in the band, got the sur of his character right even though he had the least amount of space to grow. The lad was hungry for opportunity. He grabbed what he got with both hands.
The promising young actor entered a completely new world of crime grime and slime in Titli. “It was very tough. The difficulty was not as much the criminal mindset but in creating his body language and motives, which stemmed from his experiences. Workshops were what really helped me lose this upper middle class demeanour,...

As Indian cinema continues to gain recognition worldwide, it’s still hard to explain the hold it has on those of us who grew up with it.
The intrepid cinephile can always do their research; watch the latest buzzy international feature, check out popular films that are streaming, even judge a book by its cover (a movie by its hit songs). But there’s something at the core of Hindi films especially that is deeply entrenched in culture. Usually I explain it by describing the theater where I watched every new Hindi film from 2005-2009: a suburban Michigan multiplex whose concession counter was flanked by two sacred symbols — a statue of the Hindu god Ganesh, and a framed photo of actor Shah Rukh Khan.
You need to understand that, at least conceptually, to appreciate something like “Superboys of Malegaon,” the true story of film fanatics in the eponymous village...

The similarity of Malegaon with all small towns with respect to its lack of exhibition of movies is directly proportional to the minuscule but powerful rise of cinephiles within those small towns who feel stifled by the offerings presented in those towns. And this stiflement, coupled with the economic crunch, the search for a substrate to express one’s love for cinema complemented by one’s love for another, results in dreams of increasing impossibility being striven to be made reality.
More than a holistic whole, Reema Kagti’s adaptation of Faiza Ahmed Khan’s sincere 2012 documentary “Supermen of Malegaon”—about” a group of DIY independent filmmakers crafting parodies as an outlet of the inexplicable but burning passion to create movies and crafting an independent filmmaking industry—is dependent on expansion by developing in further moments within the realism and injecting a healthy dose of “filmi-ness.”.

This week the movie theatres offer a rare opportunity to savour content that offers offbeat contentment. But the thing about Reema Kagti’s Superboys Of Malegaon and Soham Shah’s Crazxy (directed by Girish Joshi) is that they are not run-of-the-mill time passers.
Not by a long shot. Both films are navigated by polished direction and a yearning to take massy entertainment into untrodden areas.
Superboys Of Malegaon is the ultimate underdog story of the kind we haven’t seen on screen for a long time.
The closest parallel I can draw is the Telugu Cinema Bandi in 2021. Cinema Bandi is a long delayed (unofficial) sequel to Vittorio de Sica’s Bicycle Thieves, as far away from its original habitat as humanly possible, from Italy to idlee, so to speak. This was debutant director Praveen Kandregula’s Camera Thieves , the quasi-sequel to Bicycle Thieves. There is not a mean bone...

Director: Reema Kagti
Superboys Of Malegaon Movie Review (Photo Credit – Instagram)
What’s Good: The riveting tale of friendship, ambition, passion for cinema, hardships, heartbreaks, but most importantly, the daring to dream big. The performances, writing, direction, and cinematography are just the cherry on top.
What’s Bad: The film is pretty flawless, but we would have loved to see the ‘super boys’ of Malegaon witness the fruit of their labor a little more in the end.
Loo Break: Please keep the interval reserved for that
Watch or Not?: Every cinema enthusiast should witness this visual delight.
Language: Hindi
Available On: Theatrical Release

“Bombay nahin jaa sakte, Bombay ko idhar le aate,” says our Malegaon ka movie moghul in this startling meditation on parodic filmmaking.
This is 1997, when Mumbai was Bombay, and dreams died first. Reema Kagti takes us right into the heart of a world of self-styled filmmakers in the small dusty town of Malegao in Maharashtra, which acquired something akin to fame when a bunch of local boys decided to make their own Sholay and fake their own grand illusions.
Straight off, a standing ovation with a slow-clap for the four actors who play the Malegoan moviegoers. Adarsh Gourav is the director Nasir who won’t stop dreaming even when the lights have been switched off. Shashank Arora is the aspiring actor so blindly devoted to Nasir’s dream he won’t let his devotion dither for a second. Anuj Singh Duhan is Akram, the team’s cinematographer. Then there is Vineet Kumar Singh as Farogh,...

Was it a tactical error to release the lighthearted Mere Husband Ki Biwi at a time when Chhaava rules the minds of the audience? But then, as producer Jackky Bhagnani told me an evening before release, there is no good or bad time for a film.
If the audience wants to see a film, it will. No matter what the competition. The Bhagnanis, who are under a financial cloud, really needed Mere Husband Ki Biwi to succeed. And it has. After a moderate run in theatres, it has been sold at a decent price on Ott.
The film will break even, but it could have done better had the Chhaava factor not preyed on its prospects, especially in Maharashtra, where the population has adopted the film as one of its own.
Vicky Kaushal is now radiating the confidence of a superstar, and rightly so. For his on-the-floor film Sanjay Bhansali’s Love & War,...

Shabana Azmi reminisces with Subhash K Jha in this interview about the experience of making Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd. (2007), which also featured the brilliant cast of Boman Irani, Abhay Deol, Minissha Lamba, Kay Kay Menon, Raima Sen, Karan Khanna, Sandhya Mridul, Vikram Chatwal, Ameesha Patel, and Dia Mirza.
This was your first film for your son Farhan Akhtar’s production house?
I had a ball doing Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd. My kids (Farhan and Zoya Akhtar) are involved with it. I’ve a very small part.
You had never been paired with Boman Irani before?
Boman plays this Christian Goanese guy. I play this Muslim woman. He plays a brash man. My character is more genteel. I love my look in this film. I kept telling the clothes designer Arjun Bhasin that after this film, he won’t be getting any more assignments. All of us are so atrociously dressed by design.

For the unversed, before establishing himself as a talented actor, Singh dabbled with writing. The journey gave him firsthand insights into the challenges of creative expression. This personal connection allowed him to infuse depth and realism into his portrayal.

Arjun Rampal speaks to Subhash K Jha about his many, varied exciting upcoming projects and more!
What are your current projects?
There are a few films that are completely ready for release, like Punjab 95 with Diljit, directed by Honey Trehan and produced by Ronnie Screwvala’s RSVP. The Rapist with Konkana Sen, directed by Aparna Sen, produced by Sameer Nair’s Applause. This is the one I am really excited about. It is a complex role of a man dealing with his wife’s rape.
The Rapist is an exceptional film. What was it like working with Sameer Nair and Aparna Sen?
Aparna is one of the few female directors I’ve worked with. The other was Reema Kagti for Honey Travels Pvt Ltd. The Rapist is a very sensitive exploration of the trauma of rape. Konkona is exceptional. Hats off to Sameer Nair and Applause for backing this game-changing project.

Following Fernanda Torres’ surprise Golden Globe win last Sunday, Walter Salles’ political bio-drama “I’m Still Here” is picking up steam going into Oscars voting as it has now also received the Fipresci Prize for Best International Feature Film at the 36th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival. Salles’ film is based on Marcelo Rubens Paiva’s 2015 memoir of the same name and follows a mother and activist as she comes to terms with the forced disappearance of her husband, a dissident politician fighting against the dictatorship in Brazil at the time.
Of the film, the Palm Springs jury said in a statement, “To ‘I’m Still Here,’ for conveying the horror of encroaching dictatorship from the intimate perspective of a mother defending not just her family of five, but her dignity. Evoking the severity of the violence without resorting to melodrama, director Walter Salles captures a critical moment of history in scrupulous and compelling detail.

Indian director Reema Kagti admits that living in Mumbai and working in the Mumbai film industry for so long tends to make people a “little jaded,” not to mention a “little full of yourself.”
Which is why she claims it was a “really humbling experience” making “Superboys of Malegaon,” her biopic about a group of small-town, DIY Indian filmmakers led by amateur director Nasir Sheikh.
“The first thing about Nasir that really hit me was as a director. He had no agenda. He was just making films for the love of making films, and to me, that was very humbling,” she said, speaking at the Variety Lounge presented by Film AlUla at the Red Sea Film Festival in Saudi Arabia. “And I think at some point I kind of just took that on and followed my instinct and did whatever I did just for the love of making this film.

Indian producer, Excel Entertainment co-founder Ritesh Sidhwani, is preparing for the global rollout of “Superboys of Malegaon,” which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and screened at the BFI London Film Festival.
The film is an Amazon MGM Studios, Excel Entertainment and Tiger Baby production. Directed by Reema Kagti, it tells the story of a group of friends in Malegaon, India, who create parody films with limited resources. Sidhwani greenlit the project over 15 years ago after hearing about the real-life inspiration behind the story.
“It’s basically gives you that kind of hope, that, if you can dream of something and you have a goal in life, and you just keep pursuing it, and you can achieve it,” Sidhwani told Variety.
Following its festival run, “Superboys of Malegaon” is set for a theatrical release in India and international markets, including non-diaspora territories, before streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
