- Though his mother converted to Christianity, much of his family is of Jewish descent. While Douglas is still a devout Christian, his brother David returned to Judaism after the death of their mother. Their stepfather, C. S. Lewis, helped David with his return to Judaism, even consulting with one of his Oxford colleagues, the Jewish History scholar Cecil Roth, to find kosher food and religious services for the boy.
