Though his mother converted to Christianity, much of his family is of Jewish descent. While Douglas is still a devout Christian, his brother David returned to Judaism after the death of their mother. Their stepfather, C. S. Lewis, helped David with his return to Judaism, even consulting with one of his Oxford colleagues, the Jewish History scholar Cecil Roth, to find kosher food and religious services for the boy.

Stepson of C.S. Lewis and son of Joy Gresham.

His parents divorced when he was young. He lived with his mother and after her death, with his step-father.

Has a brother named David Gresham

Appears as a character in William Nicholson's play Shadowlands. He is played by Joseph Mazzello in the film directed by Richard Attenborough.
