The end is in sight for Heartbreak High. Netflix has renewed the reboot of the classic Australian comedy drama, which follows kids at a fictional high school, for a third and final season, the streamer announced Thursday.

Season 3 will see cast and creators reassemble in Sydney, Australia for the final year at Hartley High.

Season 2, released on April 11, premiered as one of the most popular shows both in Australia and worldwide on Netflix, according to the streamer. It debuted at #1 in Australia and stayed on the Global Top 10 English TV Series list for three consecutive weeks. The series also reached over 2 billion views on TikTok.

The second season of Heartbreak High is coming to Netflix, and viewers will see two new faces in the cast. Sam Rechner and Kartanya Maynard are joining returnees Ayesha Madon, Chloe Hayden, Thomas Weatherall, James Majoos, Asher Yasbincek, Will McDonald, Gemma Chua-Tran, Sherry-Lee Watson, Bryn Chapman Parish, Josh Heuston, Brodie Townsend, Chika Ikogwe, and Rachel House in the comedy-drama series.

Netflix on Wednesday renewed the reboot of the classic Australian comedy drama for a second season.

The show, which is produced by Fremantle Australia and NewBe, launched September 14 on the streamer and amassed more than 42.6 million hours viewed in its first three weeks, putting it on Netflix’s top 10 lists.

The original Heartbreak High aired in Australia between 1994-1996 on Network Ten and between 1997-1999 on ABC Australia and also had a big fan base in the UK.

The reboot, which comes from Hannah Carroll Chapman, stars Asher Yasbincek, Gemma Chua-Tran, Josh Heuston, James Majoos, Chloe Hayden, Ayesha Madon, Sherry-Lee Watson, Will McDonald, Bryn Chapman-Parish, Brodie Townsend, Thomas Weatherall and Chika Ikogwe. Paramount-owned British network Channel 5, Australia’s Network 10 and Fremantle are looking to a post-Neighbours future and working on a primetime thriller from Neighbours exec Jason Herbison, starring Stay Close actor Jo Joyner.

Filming will get underway shortly in Australia on four-parter Riptide, which will follow Alison (Joyner), whose life is plunged into despair when her new Australian husband vanishes after a morning surf. It quickly becomes obvious there is more to the story than meets the eye as she sets out to investigate his disappearance.

Joyner will play the lead and Herbison created the show. He was an exec on Channel 5/Network 10 miniseries Lie With Me and Neighbours, the soap produced by Fremantle for Channel 5 and Network 10’s (and streamer 10 Peach) that is about to end after three-and-a-half decades, as the UK network pushes further into original drama such as Riptide.

Joining Joyner is Ciarán Griffiths and Australian actors David Berry, Peter O’Brien, Ally Fowler (Wentworth), Pia Miranda, rising stars Benny Turland, Asher Yasbincek and Yazeed Dahar, and newcomers Benjamin Samaddar and Sonya Suares.

Nearly six years ago, “Rams,” a touching humanist drama from Iceland directed and written by Grímur Hákonarson, won hearts — and prizes — at the Cannes Film Festival. Now, in trots “Rams,” an Australian remake, directed by Jeremy Sims (“Last Cab to Darwin”). Adapted with winning cultural specificity by former newsman Jules Duncan, it’s longer and more broadly comic than the Icelandic version and boasts a tacked on, feel-good ending. Beloved Antipodean stars Sam Neill and Michael Caton play the two estranged brothers who must pull together to save what is dearest to them: their sheep.

Although they have not spoken to one another for 40 years, Colin (Neill) and older brother Les (Caton) Grimurson live on neighboring stud farms in a valley near Mount Barker, Western Australia. The spectacularly scenic landscape with its nearby mountains and beaches as well as baking hot summers and bush fires becomes a fateful character in the action.

In a boost to cinemas, Roadshow’s local comedy-drama Rams has posted the third highest opening weekend post-covid, behind only Tenet and After We Collided.

Opening on 298 screens and earning $809,177 ($1.27 million with previews), Roadshow CEO Joel Pearlman has touted the result, arguing it proves Australian audiences are enthusiastic to return to cinemas.

A reimagining of 2015 Icelandic drama Hrútar, Jeremy Sims’ directs the Michael Caton and Sam Neill-starrer which follows two estranged brothers as they raise separate flocks of sheep descended from their family’s prized bloodline. When a rare disease threatens their stock, they have to work together to save their sheep, their small town and their family’s legacy.

Over the weekend, Neill was nominated for the Aacta Award Best Lead Actor for his performance. The supporting cast includes Miranda Richardson, Wayne Blair, Leon Ford, Travis McMahon, Asher Keddie, Hayley McElhinney, Kipan Rothbury and newcomers Asher Yasbincek and Will McNeill.

Opening on 250-plus screens on August 27, the day after its CinefestOZ premiere at Orana Cinemas in Busselton, Jeremy Sims’ Rams will be the first Australian wide release since cinemas re-opened.

Claire Gandy, Event Cinemas general manager, film and content, has seen the movie starring Michael Caton, Sam Neill and Miranda Richardson and is super confident of its commercial prospects.

“The audiences are going to be 100 per cent behind Rams and many of the other upcoming Australian films,” Gandy said in a webinar with Screen Producers Australia CEO Matt Deaner.

“We forget what it’s like to watch a great Australian film in cinema. There are some great scenes in Rams which on a big screen are going to look fantastic. I look forward to the celebration of Australian film, whenever that may start.”

Backed by Screen Australia, the second season of the ABC’s ground-breaking drama serial The Heights will start shooting in Perth on August 26, providing more opportunities for emerging directors, writers and actors.

Jub Clerc, whose short Storytime is featured in the horror anthology Dark Whispers – Volume 1 curated by Megan Riakos and Leonie Marsh, and Kelli Cross (Aussie Rangers) are joining the cohort of directors under the production’s mentorship program.

They will be mentored by Karl Zwicky, alongside another addition in Tenika Smith (Neighbours) and Renée Webster, who made her TV drama directing debut on the first season.

Miranda Richardson is joining Sam Neill and Michael Caton in Jeremy Sims’ Rams, a re-imagining of Icelandic drama Hrútar, which is now shooting in Mt Barker in Wa’s Great Southern region.

The Oscar-nominated and BAFTA-winning (Damage) actress is playing Kat, an expat Brit who works as the veterinarian in a sheep farming town that is overcome by a rare ovine disease.

Neill and Caton star as estranged brothers who live on adjoining farms but haven’t spoken to each other for 40 years. The brothers are forced to find a way to work together to save their flock and their family’s legacy when their sheep and their small town are threatened.

Miranda Richardson has signed on for the English-language remake of Un Certain Regard winner “Rams.” The British star of stage and screen joins a cast that includes Sam Neill and Michael Caton on the movie, which is currently shooting in western Australia.

Richardson plays Kat, the local veterinarian of a sheep-farming town hit by a rare disease affecting the flocks of estranged brothers Colin and Les, played by Neill and Caton, respectively. The outbreak forces them to work together to save their livelihoods and family legacy. Charlotte Boving played the original character that Richardson has taken on in the re-imagining of Grimur Hakonarson’s well-received picture.
