When NBC News announced in January that Hallie Jackson, its senior Washington correspondent, would leave the anchoring duties she had held at MSNBC since 2016, some eyebrows rose. But NBC News was chasing something else on the rise: Digital audiences.

Since Jackson began anchoring a late-afternoon hour on NBC News Now in December 2021, a growing audience has sought her out. Viewership surged 108% over the course of a year. “You don’t see those numbers in many businesses,” says Janelle Rodriguez, the NBC News executive vice president who oversees the streaming outlet, in an interview. “When you see that level of audience increase, you know you are on to something,” On Monday, Jackson will double her time on her program, “Hallie Jackson Now,” to two hours, which means she will hold forth from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Hallie Jackson’s MSNBC show will end next month as she expands her daily NBC News Now program by an hour.

That move is part of a series of lineup changes MSNBC announced on Thursday. Chris Jansing will add an hour to her anchoring duties, as Chris Jansing Reports expands to two hours from 1 Pm Et to 3 Pm Et. Katy Tur Reports will move to 3 Pm.

Meanwhile, Jose Diaz-Balart’s show will move back an hour to 11 Am Et, with a rotating lineup of hosts at 10 Am until a permanent anchor is named. Andrea Mitchell Reports will remain at noon Et.

The changes will take place on Feb. 13.

Jackson launched Hallie Jackson Reports on MSNBC in September, 2021, and previously anchored MSNBC Live at 10 Am starting in 2016.

She launched Hallie Jackson Now on NBC News Now in November, 2021, doing double duty as the network expanded its programming on the streaming network.

MSNBC is shifting the roles of anchors Chris Jansing and Hallie Jackson on broadcast and streaming programming, the network confirmed Thursday to TheWrap.

The network has added an hour to “Chris Jansing Reports,” which will now air from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on MSNBC. Jackson, who has been anchoring the 3 p.m. hour of “MSNBC Reports,” will shift to streaming on NBC News Now with an hour of “Hallie Jackson Now.” Katy Tur will now anchor the 3 p.m. slot.

Other notable changes to MSNBC’s line-up include José Díaz-Balart shifting to 11 a.m. while Andrea Mitchell assumes anchoring duties at noon and Katy Tur anchors the 3 p.m. hour. As the 10 a.m. time slot remains without a permanent anchor, the hour will be anchored by rotating hosts until a new anchor is select.

The new year is kicking off with some notable changes at NBC’s newsgathering operations, including daytime and streaming programming shifts as well as layoffs impacting the division.

Over at the digital platform NBC News Now, Hallie Jackson is getting a vote of confidence with an additional hour of the senior Washington correspondent’s show, which will now air from 5 to 7 p.m. Et.

“On Now, she’s covered everything from the midterms, to mental health, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and climate change, making sense of the news of the day for our viewers in her signature conversational style, and now, going even deeper with the new hour,” stated Janelle Rodriguez, who was just promoted to executive vp NBC News Now to oversee the service in addition to NBC Nightly News.

On the cable news side, MSNBC is retooling its daytime programming schedule, with changes including José Díaz-Balart taking over the 11 a.

CNN isn’t the only cable-news network reworking its daytime schedule.

MSNBC is expanding Chris Jansing’s afternoon perch to two hours from one as the Washington D.C-based Hallie Jackson, who also anchors a late-afternoon program on NBC News Now, leaves the cable outlet to focus on the streaming work. Meanwhile, weekend host Jonathan Capehart, who has held forth on Sundays, will now do an hour on both Saturday and Sunday. All the moves come as NBCUniversal’s new operations refine their efforts under a reorganization unveiled Wednesday.

The moves were revealed to staffers Thursday in memos from Rashida Jones, president of MSNBC, and Janelle Rodriguez, the NBC News executive vice president who oversees NBC News Now. Programming changes at MSNBC will take place February 13 for weekday programs and February 18 for weekend programs, Jones said in her note.

NBC News and MSNBC are laying off about 75 employees scattered across the networks, a source with knowledge confirmed Thursday to TheWrap.

The layoffs are a result of targeted programming and editorial changes that will allow the networks, which have a cumulative workforce of around 3,500 staffers total, to invest in key growth areas, according to the source.

Though both branches have recently created hundreds of roles in digital streaming and core television programming, MSNBC and NBC News plans to create new positions in the coming weeks in areas of growth.

Under a new structure, Libby Leist, the NBC News executive who oversees “Today,” and Janelle Rodriguez, the NBC News executive who supervises the streaming outlet NBC News Now, will both report to Conde. NBC News president Noah Oppenheim is exiting his post after five years, stepping down and inking a film and TV production deal with NBCUniversal.

Oppenheim’s departure is part of a larger reorganization at the NBC News Group, with much of his responsibilities shifting to a new hire: New York Times veteran Rebecca Blumenstein, who will become president of editorial for NBC News.

According to a memo from NBC News Group chief Cesar Conde, Blumenstein will oversee editorial, newsgathering, booking and the NBC News bureaus around the world. She will also oversee the Dateline and Meet the Press franchises, as well as NBC News Studios.

Now Tonight with Gadi Schwartz will launch next month, Janelle Rodriguez, senior vice president, editorial who oversees NBC News Now, wrote in a memo to staffers.

“You can expect this show to be full of smart and in-depth reporting with the energy and versatility Gadi is known to bring to the screen,” she wrote, adding that he will anchor from Los Angeles, “making this one of the only national news broadcasts originating daily from the West Coast.”

Schwartz helped launch NBC News’ Stay Tuned on Snapchat and hosted The Overview on Peacock. He joined the network in 2016. He’s covered issues such as the immigration crisis at the border and the unrest in Los Angeles following the police killing of George Floyd.

Schwartz has expanded his profile by co-anchoring “Stay Tuned” on Snapchat over the past five years, making him “a familiar draw for a new generation of viewers,” Rodriguez said. “Since joining NBC News in 2016 as a correspondent, Gadi has covered a range of pressing issues across all of our platforms, most notably the immigration crisis at the border.”

Yes, viewers can see Lester Holt, Savannah Guthrie Chuck Todd and Andrea Mitchell hold forth on NBC proper. But they might also seek out a growing array of programming on digital venues.

Though NBC News has had a presence on TikTok since 2019, the unit is for the first time dispatching personnel to provide real-time reporting to the venue’s users says Catherine Kim, senior vice president of global digital news. NBC News can tap any of its journalists to deliver a quick hit, recut a piece of video that ran elsewhere, or, says Kim, ramp up new efforts to tell users if misinformation is circulating. A series, #NBCdebunks, aims to give the TikTok audience facts in the face of false stories circulating on the app.

“It’s going to be a real priority,” says Kim, of the growing TikTok effort.

Jen Psaki slipped into the studio with seconds to spare.

It was the evening of Nov. 1, a week before the 2022 midterm elections, and the NBC News political unit (not to mention its contributors, like the former White House press secretary) were in overdrive. Just a few minutes earlier Psaki had been in a remote studio appearing on Chris Hayes’ MSNBC program, now she had rushed downstairs to the NBC Washington bureau’s ground floor studio, where she joined anchors Chuck Todd and Kristen Welker as part of a primetime special to tee up the midterms.

The network pulled out all of the stops, with 11 correspondents appearing live from across the country, panelists including Psaki, Senator Claire McCaskill and former North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory, and Steve Kornacki analyzing key races at his signature touch screen.

When broadcast networks preempt primetime programming for the midterms Tuesday, they will be joining up with their streaming channels, all of which will have been well into their daylong coverage of the vote.

This cycle, all of the legacy networks are looking at the midterms as a key opportunity for ABC News Live, CBS News Streaming and NBC News Now, capitalizing on an expected audience uptick to try to make the channels a part of viewers’ regular news diet.
