Looking back, it's no wonder "Labyrinth" bombed at the box office. The last feature film directed by the late, great Jim Henson is just too inspiredly bizarre to have ever stood a chance of catching on with a mainstream audience right away, much less at the height of the Reagan era when it originally came out in 1986. It took many years of young people singing along to "Magic Dance" during slumber parties and coming to recognize their own sexual awakening right along with the then-teenaged Jennifer Connelly as Sarah for the film to become the cult classic it is today.
Indeed, dark, twisted, and occasionally sensual fantasy films that struggle to catch on with the masses before finding a niche audience were very much Henson's bag in the '80s. His and Frank Oz's 1982 feature film "The Dark Crystal" was also a financial dud that enjoyed a long...

It’s been 13 years since the Galactica reached Earth. We watched in the 2009 finale “Daybreak” as Admiral Adama, President Roslin, Apollo, Starbuck, Gaius Baltar, and Caprica Six walked towards a bright and unwritten future in their new home. It was a cathartic (but predictably divisive) ending to a six-year TV journey that remains one of the best and most influential in science fiction history. There’s no question that Battlestar Galactica paved the way for other serious, gritty political sci-fi dramas like The Expanse and the recently released Foundation adaptation.
But Battlestar Galactica‘s legacy is one thing. What about its future? That’s a question NBCUniversal has struggled to answer in the years since our heroes first touched down on our planet. There were multiple attempts at spin-offs directly after the flagship series finale on the Syfy channel, including two prequels — Caprica, which told the story of Bill Adama...

Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ long-dormant Metal Gear Solid adaptation received a surprising burst of life today when Deadline reported that Oscar Isaac has been cast as Solid Snake.
The details of Isaac’s involvement are few and far between at this time, but some have already pointed out that Isaac’s loaded upcoming schedule (which includes Moon Knight and an HBO miniseries) likely means that the Metal Gear Solid movie likely won’t start filming until sometime later in 2021. Even then, that’s an optimistic projection that doesn’t necessarily account for the million things that can happen between now and then as well as the chaotic state of the film industry these days. The story of the often delayed Uncharted adaptation should give you some indication of how far away the Metal Gear Solid movie really is from being finished.

16 years on from Joel Schumacher’s 2004 take on The Phantom of the Opera, Universal may be going back to the property for another musical adaptation. Sources close to Wgtc – the same ones who told us National Treasure 3 and Now You See Me 3 were in the works months before they were announced – say that there’s a reboot of the story in development at Universal and we have a few interesting details on how it’ll differ quite drastically from previous takes on the material.
The most dramatic change is that the setting of the story will be updated from 19th century Paris to present-day New York. Despite that, the essence of the plot remains the same. At the core is the Phantom, who possesses physical and psychological capabilities well beyond that of a normal man and some form of telepathy. He was once displayed at sideshows as a disfigured freak,...

Updated with Sunday figures: In the wake of Terminator: Dark Fate’s failure at the B.O., and Paramount’s recent decision to make Beverly Cops 4 for Netflix, we have the further breakdown of cinema IP in Sony’s Charlie’s Angels reboot, which is tanking with a God-awful $8.6M domestic opening, $27.9M worldwide (from 26 markets), 3 Stars on Screen Engine-Comscore’s PostTrak, and a B+ Cinemascore.
The Elizabeth Banks-directed-written and produced pic is also opening in 27 offshore markets, China being one where it’s also bombing, with a $7.8M 3-day take in third place behind No. 1 local title Somewhere Winter ($13.1M). In today’s film news roundup, Andy Garcia’s spy thriller is sold, “Battlestar Galactica” gets a screenwriter, and Brooklyn Decker gets an award.

Gravitas Ventures has acquired North American rights to spy thriller “Against the Clock,” starring Andy Garcia, Dianna Agron (“Glee”), and Justin Bartha, Variety has learned exclusively.
The film, formerly titled “Headlock,” is written and directed by Mark Polish and produced by Benaroya Pictures. “Against the Clock” will be available in theaters and on demand Jan. 11, 2019.
Polish plays a CIA agent who is seriously injured during a mission, and Agron portrays his wife, a former CIA operative who becomes determined to find out what happened — a truth the CIA director, played by Garcia, wants concealed at all costs.

Jay Basu has been tapped to rewrite the screenplay for “Battlestar Galactica,” Universal Pictures’ reimagining of the 1978 television series created by Glen Larson, individuals with knowledge of the project exclusively tell TheWrap. An earlier draft of the script was written by Lisa Joy (“Westworld”).
Francis Lawrence will direct the film. Dylan Clark will produce for his Dylan Clark Productions alongside Michael De Luca through his Michael De Luca Productions. Scott Stuber will executive produce.
Like “Star Wars,” “Battlestar Galactica” was a 1970s space opera that traded on special effects, amazing hair, and a strange world. The show was a response to the success of George Lucas’ film, with its own space battles and spooky, robotic bad guys. Time Magazine listed it as one of the 100 Best TV Shows of All-Time.

Jay Basu, the writer behind the recent release The Girl in the Spider’s Web, has been hired to rewrite the screenplay of Universal's long-gestating Battlestar Galactica movie.
Westworld co-creator Lisa Joy wrote a previous draft of the feature — set to be directed by Hunger Games filmmaker Francis Lawrence — a reimagining of the 1978 sci-fi series that follows a small group of human survivors aboard a battleship tasked with rebuilding society after a massive robot attack.
The series was reimagined as a Syfy miniseries in 2003, which was parlayed into a long-running episodic series from Ronald D. Moore.

Benedict Cumberbatch voices the titular green Whoville denizen in Universal’s new adaptation of Seuss’ 1957 story from Illumination. The film has an early Rotten Tomatoes score of 54% and has landed an A- CinemaScore.

Chicago – There is nothing wrong with revisiting The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. That tattoo has made beaucoup bucks in book and film forms (both foreign language and Americanized versions), and Claire Foy taking over for Rooney Mara in the title role is seamless. So why the totally lackluster story? Is this a narrative source problem?
Rating: 2.5/5.0
The film, directed by Fede Alvarez (“Don’t Breathe”) is stylish and good looking, the performances are good and the production design works, but it devolves into style-over-substance confusion that meanders to a foregone conclusion. What began as a premise with a mysterious female computer sporting the titular tattoo – who also knows martial arts, weaponry and the chess game of staying one move ahead – has run out of steam as The Girl becomes a wrecking crew, who is invulnerable to being shot, drugged and generally beaten to a pulp. Illumination and Universal’s “The Grinch,” a remake of the Dr. Seuss classic “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” earned $2.2 million in Thursday previews from 3,200 screens. It will open on 4,140 screens this weekend.
Universal is projecting an opening weekend of $50 million for “The Grinch” and as high as $62 million based on numbers from independent trackers. Illumination’s previous Dr. Seuss adaptation, “The Lorax,” exceeded expectations by opening to $70.2 million in March 2012. Both “The Lorax” and “The Grinch” have reported $75 million budgets, consistent with other Illumination films. More recently, Illumination’s 2016 film “Sing” opened to only $1.7 million in Thursday previews on the way to a $35.2 million opening.

While “Nutcracker and the Four Realms” failed to leave much of a mark on the box office, this weekend should see the start of a dominant period for family films, starting with Illumination/Universal’s “The Grinch.” The Dr. Seuss adaptation should post a solid opening, but will it be a major factor as more films fight for families in the coming weeks?

It’s never too early to cash in on a little Yuletide spirit.
Universal and Illumination are seeing green as “The Grinch” anticipates to earn between $55 million to $65 million when it launches on 4,140 screens. The animated comedy is expected to dominate over “The Girl In the Spider’s Web” and “Overlord,” the two other wide releases hitting theaters this weekend.
In the adaptation of the classic Dr. Seuss tale, Benedict Cumberbatch voices the animated grouch who loathes Christmas. The voice cast also includes Rashida Jones, Kenan Thompson, Angela Lansbury, and Pharrell Williams. Frequent Illumination collaborator Yarrow Cheney took on directing duties with Scott Mosier.

Claire Foy is a credible Lisbeth Salander, but The Girl in the Spider's Web waters her down in bland action movie cliché.
The return of Lisbeth Salander to the big screen should be a big deal. As one of the most fascinating heroines to come out of literature in this century, Stieg Larsson’s avenging goth angel took millions of readers by storm, and then by heartache, as Larsson’s death prevented the plan to continue her adventures for years to come. Yet in Hollywood, the girl with the dragon tattoo remains an elusive figure. David Fincher’s vision and Rooney Mara’s magnetism couldn’t quite turn her into a global franchise for adults, and now The Girl in the Spider’s Web is content to simply reimagine her as something jejune and small: it turns her into a superhero.
This too is the wrong impulse.

Fede Alvarez isn’t afraid of franchises — the Uruguayan filmmaker made his feature directorial debut with the 2013 reboot of the beloved “Evil Dead” series — but he is wary of them. That’s why it’s a bit of a surprise that for his third feature, Alvarez opted to again plunge himself into a well-known franchise that’s been through two iterations. The latest film in the “Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” franchise, the Alvarez-directed “The Girl in the Spider’s Web,” is a wholly recast take on the English-language version of the series’ first book.
Starring Claire Foy as misanthropic hacker Lisbeth Salander, the film jumps years ahead of the ending of David Fincher’s Rooney Mara-starring “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” picking up the twisted story after the events of the third book in Larsson’s Millennium trilogy. Lisbeth Salander is no longer anonymous. Much as the secretive hacker would like to stay out of the spotlight, the latest on-screen incarnation of Stieg Larsson’s franchise-spawning literary anti-heroine opens with Lisbeth (Claire Foy) enacting her own kind of revenge on a badly behaved man, only for a local news outlet to instantly pin the nefarious deed on her. And yet, in this on-screen incarnation of the series — the third version to hit theaters, the fifth film total — it’s one of many changes made to the girl with the dragon tattoo, who has evolved beyond dead-eyed computer whiz into a slightly more emotional warrior with a real flair for punishing baddies.
Even better, she’s now played by Emmy-winner Foy, who turns in the best on-screen depiction of Lisbeth yet, facing down stiff competition from both original Swedish star Noomi Rapace and Rooney Mara.

I know a lot of fans aren’t really excited about Elizabeth Banks’ Charlie’s Angels reboot but this new casting news might spark some interest in you. According to THR, Patrick Stewart is in final negotiations to take on the role of Bosley.
I love Patrick Stewart and the role of Bosley will certainly be an interesting one for him to take on. He will join the previously cast Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott (Aladdin, Power Rangers) and Ella Balinska (Midsomer Murders).
What’s interesting about this is that we heard Banks was also going to play Bosley in the film. Well, there’s a new little twist to the Bosley character in this reboot. It’s explained that the film will feature multiple characters named Bosley. In the past Bosley acted as the face of the enigmatic and never-seen owner of the detective agency, Charlie Townsend.

Watch Claire Foy’s Badass Take on Lisbeth Salander in New ‘Girl in the Spider’s Web’ Trailer (Video)
Claire Foy has traded her royal duds for a decidedly more goth look in the explosive new trailer for “The Girl in the Spider’s Web.”
“The Crown” star’s take on tattooed goth hacker Lisbeth Salander is decidedly edgier than her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II — complete with some high-voltage action and what looks like a romantic same-sex kiss late in the clip.
The new trailer also offers more details about the plot, including a deadly sibling rivalry between Lisbeth and her long-estranged sister Camilla (Sylvia Hoeks). Director Fede Alvarez’s film also stars Lakeith Stanfield, Stephen Merchant, Claes Bang, Christopher Convery, Synnøve Macody Lund and Vicky Krieps.

Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska will be the latest actresses to say "Good morning, Charlie!" as they've landed the lead roles in the upcoming big screen reboot. Elizabeth Banks is directing the film from a script she wrote with Jay Basu, and is planning on also playing Bosley this time around. That doesn't seem to jive with the idea of it following on from previous films, but perhaps there's some confusion regarding that particular story point.

Sony announced Thursday that Elizabeth Banks will now star in her upcoming remake of “Charlie’s Angels” as Bosley, with Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska joining Kristen Stewart as the titular spy trio.
Banks is directing, producing and writing the film, which has had its release date moved out of its summer slot to Sept. 27, 2019.
In the new film, Charlie’s Townsend Agency has dramatically expanded since the events of the franchise’s previous installments, with the Angels in Banks’ film being one of many teams working for the agency around the world. Bosley, originally a male role played by David Doyle in the 1970s TV series and by Bill Murray in the 2000 film adaptation, serves as the technical adviser and comic relief, relaying mission information to the Angels from the mysterious Charlie.

Sony Pictures have released the first trailer for ‘The Girl In the Spider’s Web‘, the latest cinematic iteration of author Steig Larson‘s Millennium saga. The reboot sees Claire Foy taking over the iconic role of Lisbeth Salander, with ‘Evil Dead‘ (3013) and ‘Don’t Breathe‘ helmer Fede Alvarez stepping into the director’s chair this time around. Although plot details are being kept under pretty tight wraps a this point, the film follows Salander and Blomkvist years after the events of ‘The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo‘ as the two re-unite to uncover a new mystery from their own past.
The last time that we saw the character brought to the big screen was with David Fincher‘s 2011 big-budget remake of Larson’s original ‘Dragon Tattoo’ novel, but this trailer seems to be trying to differentiate itself from that film as much as possible, which is probably a good thing.

A tattooed Claire Foy is delivering vengeance as Lisbeth Salander in the first trailer for Sony’s “The Girl in the Spider’s Web.”
The trailer showed Foy — best known for portraying Queen Elizabeth in Netflix’s “The Crown” — as she uses an intricate trap to capture a villainous husband, and then coldly telling him as he hangs upside down that he will turn over his assets to his abused wife.
“I’m a fan of yours — the CEO who beat up two prostitutes, but then got acquitted in court yesterday,” she says. “I’m transferring 20% of your cash to these two girls, the rest I’m transferring to your wife.”
She then tells the wife, who’s also been beaten up, “He won’t hurt you again.”

Claire Foy’s Lisbeth Salander certainly knows her way around a tangled web. In this new trailer for The Girl in the Spider’s Web — an adaptation of the bestseller from Stieg Larsson’s Millennium book series — vigilante Lisbeth snares her first creep with a simple but highly effective rope trick that would do any Batman villain proud.
Haunted by her past and driven by fury at abusive men (like the wife-beating CEO who gets caught up in Lisbeth’s top-of-the-trailer snare), the title character battles her way through any number of action-packed adventures in this first-look trailer.

I'll admit, when I first heard Hollywood would be moving on with The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo franchise without Rooney Mara in tow, I was ready to hate all over it. David Fincher's take on the tale was awesome for me, and I thought it was a huge mistake when Hollywood ended up dropping it. Now that I've seen the first trailer for The Girl In The Spider's Web, however, I'm feeling a bit differently! Claire Foy makes for an intense Lisbeth Salander, and in the little time we get to see her on screen, I think she outshines Mara's by far. Read the synopsis for the film, check out the trailer, and continue reading:

The first trailer for the “The Girl in the Spider’s Web” dropped on Thursday morning and it is nothing short of action-packed.
In the just over two-and-a-half minute clip, we’re introduced to “The Crown” star Claire Foy’s take on tattooed goth hacker Lisbeth Salander, who sets the stage by immediately taking justice on a male creep on her own terms.
“The Girl in the Spider’s Web” is the latest film to be adapted from the book series written by Stieg Larsson and is first to hit the big screen since David Fincher’s 2011 version of “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” which starred Rooney Mara as Salander and Daniel Craig as Mikael Blomkvist.
Noomi Rapace also previously played Salander in the Swedish adaptation of Larsson’s Millennium series.
