Shannon Murphy’s feature debut Babyteeth leads the early Aacta Awards race, scoring nods in 12 out of 13 film categories, while Mystery Road and Stateless are ahead in television.
The Australian Academy revealed the first round of nominees for the annual awards over the weekend, to be presented across two ‘reimagined’ events later this month.
Television and documentary craft nominations, visual effects and animation, casting, hair and make-up and subscription television presenter categories are yet to be announced, expected on November 12.
Despite the disrupted year for film, some 19 narrative features are nominated so far.
However, six dominate alongside the aforementioned Babyteeth: Justin Kurzel’s True History of the Kelly Gang, with 10 nominations, John Sheedy’s H is for Happiness with nine, Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man and Unjoo Moon’s I Am Woman close behind with eight and seven nominations respectively, and Natalie Erika James’ Relic with five. Her song will not be silenced. IFC Films has finally unveiled an official trailer for one of the best films to debut last year - Jennifer Kent's The Nightingale. This originally premiered at the Venice Film Festival, where it won two awards, and went on to show at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year as a special presentation. The Nightingale takes place in the 1800s on the island of Tasmania of the coast of Australia where a young woman played by Aisling Franciosi sets off seeking vengeance for horrific acts committed against her family. The film explores the misogyny, racism, sexual violence and classism of the era as well as the price of chasing revenge. It was my #1 film of 2018, and I interviewed Jennifer Kent at Sundance earlier this year. It is not an easy watch, but it is an essential watch. The full cast includes Sam Claflin,...

While a lively debate over the 13 Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards for The Great Gatsby rages on social media, TV viewers have given their verdict on the Network Ten telecast.
The delayed two-hour show, which started at 8.30 pm, drew an average audience of 400,000 in the capital cities and a peak of 540,000. That was better than last year.s one-hour telecast which had 331,000 viewers. To be fair the AFI confirmed Ten as its broadcast partner only a couple of weeks before that so there was a lack of promotion last year.
The show, which had a weak lead-in from Jamie Oliver's new series Save with Jamie,. was beaten by Person of Interest on Nine and Bones on Seven.
On Facebook and Twitter there was a pronounced backlash against The Great Gatsby.s domination over The Rocket. Kim Mordaunt.s low-budget Lao-set drama got 12 nominations, two fewer than Baz Luhrmann.s opus,...

Aussie filmmaker Tony Krawitz first drew international notice and won accolades in 2005 with Jewboy, a dramatic short he wrote and helmed that starred Ewan Leslie as a orthodox Jew struggling to find his place in the world and within his own family. Besides taking home honors from the Australian Film Institute for Best Short Fiction Film and Best Short Screenplay, Jewboy earned coveted spots in the Cannes Film Festival as well as at Sundance. Now at last Krawitz offers his narrative feature follow-up Dead Europe. The drama, which made its world premiere Friday night at the Toronto International Film Festival, reteams Krawitz with Leslie, who stars as Isaac, an Australian photographer who learns some dark secrets while mourning the death of his father. Per his father's last wishes, Isaac takes his ashes to Greece with plans to disperse them from a scenic vista. But when he's stopped by a someone...

Leigh was nominated for the Palm d'Or at Cannes for her efforts here, and it appears that praise is warranted judging from the film's newly released trailer below. Sleeping Beauty - starring Browning, Rachael Blake, Ewan Leslie, Peter Carroll, and Chris Haywood - opens in limited release December 2nd. Synopsis: Lucy is a young university...

Chicago – This serious dog lover was swayed by the family-friendly charms of “Hotel For Dogs,” now available on Blu-Ray and DVD. I’ll admit that the film has some pretty serious flaws and we’ll get to those, but if you’re a kid movie aficionado with a soft spot for man’s best friend, you could do a lot worse than the Blu-Ray of “Hotel For Dogs”. It’s a shaggy one, but a lovable movie pooch.
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0 “Hotel For Dogs” should have been better. It’s predictable, a little dull, too slapsticky, and not as clever as one would hope, but this is essentially popcorn fare for kids. Judged on that level, “Hotel For Dogs” is cute, charming, well-acted, and sweet. Yes, there are Way too many goofy dog montages like bulldogs on treadmills (easier than walking them) but the young cast is effective and the entire...
