Moonrise Kingdom director says he would consider making a 3D film; and would like to turn his new short for Prada into a series set around the world.
Wes Anderson discussed 3D, animation and an idea for a series of shorts at the Rome Film Festival this evening [Nov 13], where he introduced the world premiere of a short sponsored by Italian fashion label Prada.
The Moonrise Kingdom director, whose Grand Budapest Hotel will open the Berlinale in February, was joined on stage by regular collaborators Roman Coppola and Jason Schwartzman.
Together with cinematographer Darius Khondji, they worked on Castello Cavalcanti, an eight-minute short centred on racing driver Jed Cavalcanti and set during Italy’s Molte Miglia rally in September 1955.
Shot at Rome’s famous Cinecitta studios, where Federico Fellini made La Dolce Vita, it opens with Cavalcanti (Schwartzman) crashing his car in a village square, where the racing driver soon discovers he has a connection with the people...

3D is far from defunct, judging by the critical and commercial reception of Gravity so far. In three-and-a-half weeks it has grossed over $360 million worldwide, and with a domestic haul nearing $200 million, it’s now one the top 10 highest-grossing movies of the year.
A lot of the praise for Alfonso Cuarón’s latest is down to the spectacular conversion job done by Prime Focus London on. James Cameron has called it the “best 3D conversion ever”. When 3D is considered as part of the storytelling process, and not just an afterthought to charge audiences extra, it can be as important a decision in the production of the film as casting or script. And ‘Gravity’ is a game-changer on every level.
It was without doubt the most detailed and sophisticated shoot that Prime Focus World has completed to date, including what must be the longest converted shot ever – 15,531 frames, which is over 10 minutes and 47 seconds.

The use of 3D in "Gravity" was part of the equation from the beginning. As director Alfonso Cuarón told me in an interview last week, the original title of the script was "Gravity: A Space Suspense in 3D." Stereoscopic supervisor Chris Parks was involved in the imagery before cameras even began rolling, way back during the pre-visualization phase. It was crucial for the immersive experience Cuarón was looking for. "The 3D is a character in the film, or it contributes to the character," producer David Heyman says in the featurette below. "Alfonso really created something…that helps augment the feeling and emotion."...

If the 2D trailers and tv spots for Gravity give you the feeling of heart-stopping panic but you’d like to ramp up the emotion, then this featurette would like to make the case for seeing the movie in 3D where you can feel completely lost in space like the characters.
I have to say that if you’re going to go to a movie like this then you should probably spring for the 3D and just go for the full experience and white knuckle those arm rests. This featurette is complete with interviews with writer, director, producer Alfonso Cuarón, Sandra Bullock (Ryan Stone), producer David Heyman, stereoscopic supervisor Chris Parks, and executive producer Nikki Penny.
Featurette: Gravity
Gravity directed by Alfonso Cuarón and starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney is slated to hit theaters on October 4, 2013 in 3D and IMAX.

Chris Parks is a founding partner and head stereographer at London-based VISION3 Ltd. He wrote this response to a story that The Playlist’s Oliver Lyttelton posted last month about "Brick" writer-director Rian Johnson’s opinions on the limitations of 3D. With the opening of "The Dark Knight Rises" from director Christopher Nolan, who notably declined to make the film in 3D, coming to theaters Friday, the 3D debate continues. ------------------------------------------------------ It is very rare that that an article about 3D actually contains enough informed arguments to draw me into a conversation. However, the well-thought-through, reasoned and observed blog by Rian Johnson, which seeks to explore both the comments of veteran filmmakers and his own experiences, and Oliver Lyttelton’s article on Indiewire, were exceptions. While I agree with many of the comments, the conclusions that I have come to are slightly different. I have...

We’ve written a great deal about 3D on HeyUGuys over the years, much of it has given an insight into the technical aspects of filming in 3D.
Chris Parks of Vision 3 has recently worked on Jack The Giant Killer and Gravity, and has recently spoken at length about the effect 3D can have on an audience. We caught up with him recently, and discussed this, as well as the effect lenses and composition can have on a 3D film.
One of the topics you have spoken previously spoken about is that films have a tendency of ‘not quite getting 3D right’. I’m curious if I can get you to elaborate on that please.
The biggest fear with 3D since Avatar, in this current resurgence – this ‘quality’ resurgence is the accusation of gimmick. All productions are afraid of it, all directors are trying to avoid it, and this has led to the belief that,...

Leading UK 3-D stereoscopic production company Vision3 announce their appointment as exclusive 3-D consultants and creative partners on Elfie Hopkins and The Gammons , the Size 9 production starring Jaime Winstone that we first told you about here . The project is a landmark as the first British 3-D feature to involve an entirely UK based creative and technical team. Up until now, 3-D features filmed in the UK have relied on outsourcing from Us or European based companies. Size 9 Production's decision is a crucial step in establishing 3-D film production in the UK. Axis Films will supply specialist camera equipment and On Sight will handle the post production and data lab process. Vision3 was formed in late 2008 by Chris Parks, a stereographer of over 15 years, and Angus...
