- In 1964, he was appointed the position of Deputy Chief of the Defense Staff for Intelligence. He retired from the Royal Navy in 1967.
- After World War II, he was appointed the position of Director of Planning for the Admiralty. He was appointed the position of director of the Royal Naval College in Greenwich in 1956 and was appointed the position of deputy chief of naval personnel in 1958. In 1959, he was appointed the position of director of manpower and in 1960, he was appointed the position of the Director of the Naval Intelligence Division.
- In 1939 with James Troup and John Henry Godfrey, he helped establish the Operatonal Intelligence Centre.
- He and his brother, Norman Denning, signed up for the Royal Navy after World War I. He served in Singapore in the 1930s. In 1937, he was appointed a position to the British Naval Intelligence Division.
