Armed with a BA in Electronic Media from ACU Toby Burge began working in the film industry in 2004 on a short film for free, as many do. From there he went straight to a movie as a paid Set PA in Miami, FL, and began working his way up the ladder. After a move to Los Angeles, 900 days of PA work, and many jobs as a non-union AD he joined the DGA as a 2nd Assistant director, and worked on several films, TV shows and commercials.
While fulfilling the DGA requirements to work as a local 2nd AD in LA he had the opportunity to work as a stuntman for four years.
Toby made the move to 1st AD on Season 2 of Insecure in 2017, and completed multiple seasons of Insecure and Blackish among other shows.
Toby began directing in 2021 on Season 8 of Blackish with the episode entitled "Sneakers By The Dozen", and followed it up in Season 5 of Grownish with the episode entitled "Addiction".
