Director Dennis Dimster-Denk’s Mikey had the tagline “Remember, Jason and Freddy were kids once too”, and the movie does its best to make sure the titular creepy kid (played by Brian Bonsall) is just as deadly as any adult slasher. When composer and songwriter Lisbeth Scott was working on the end music for Marc Meyers’ romantic film, “All My Life” (now streaming on Netflix), she found herself so immersed in the world of the characters that she ended up writing an end title song.
The film is based on a true story and stars Jessica Rothe and Harry Shum Jr. in this story about a couple who go on a date, fall in love, but it’s not all fun as games and sweet romance as Solomon (Chum) is diagnosed with a terminal illness. With that in mind, Scott wrote the lyrics to “Just You and I” with ease, touched by the poignancy of it all.
She breaks down how the song came together and looks at her favorite cue in the film.
Thanks to Netflix, romances are having a revival. How did “Just for You and I” come about?...

Inspired by real-life couple Jennifer Carter and Solomon “Sol” Chau, All My Life is the sanitized, sanded-down version of what probably would have been a very interesting documentary that wouldn’t require the sugary artificiality of a script that feels like it was written by a mall focus group recruited exclusively from customers of Williams Sonoma and Pink by Victoria’s Secret. In this narrative version, Carter (Jessica Rothe) and Chau (Harry Shum Jr.) are imagined as twenty-somethings living their lives in search of “something more” as Jennifer’s voiceover tells us upfront.
Jennifer is a student who never seems to have any professional interests; Sol works first in marketing but has a true passion for food. While out a sports bar with friends, Jennifer and Solomon bond over a margarita and decide to meet up for a run and a trip to the farmers market the next day, where they...

Few titles open at the North American box office post-Thanksgiving weekend, which usually is one of the weakest of the year. In 2019, that meant it fell short of $100 million. This year, it will see less than $9 million. Fewer than half of domestic theaters are open, of course, but the biggest barrier remains audience resistance to theaters during the pandemic.
Thanks to “The Croods: A New Age,” this isn’t the lowest-grossing weekend since theaters began reopening in mid-August. That sequel received most of the action, along with five other titles from Universal and its specialty division Focus Features.
Three of those titles — “Freaky,” “Let Him Go,” and “Come Play” — are already available at home for $19.99 after each spent three weeks in theaters. With the absence of product, they continue to place in the top 10. The three other films, including “Croods,” will also land on VOD platforms this month.

Cinemas — the ones that are open — are hurting for new content. With only one wide release this week — that would be Focus Features’ “Half Brothers” opening on approximately 1,200 screens — film fans will likely be staying home and sifting through new releases via streaming instead.
For example, audiences have their choice between Disney fairy-tale sendup “Godmothered” and Francis Ford Coppola’s re-edit of “The Godfather Part III.” The former (which stars Isla Fisher and Jillian Bell) is available to Disney Plus subscribers, while the latter is getting a very limited theatrical run.
Who knows how audiences will react to a story about a romance cut short by medical tragedy in the era of Covid-19, but Universal serves up a well-made version of just that kind of love story with “All My Life,” featuring Jessica Rothe and Harry Shum Jr.

At first, “All My Life” looks like a typical romantic comedy: Girl and boy meet cute, banter playfully, flirt, go on a fun first date and fall in love during montages set to pop songs.
But if you know anything about the Marc Meyers movie starring Jessica Rothe and Harry Shum Jr., you know going in that this is not a rom-com. It’s based on a true story, and all the promo materials spell out that this is a movie about a couple dealing with a serious illness. It’s a drama rather than a comedy, so call it a rom-dram – and if that phrase seems slightly dismissive, it’s appropriate for a movie that plays up the sentimentality and never escapes the feeling that it’s a light look at a heavy subject.
That’s not necessarily a bad thing, and “All My Life” is nothing if not...

In these highly cynical times, it might be hard to process the true-life tale of a young couple’s romance cut short by terminal illness. But the warmth and touching tenderness of “All My Life” melts even the coldest of hearts in its quest to deliver happy and sad tears. Unlike the phony, syrupy, and predictably manipulative devices of a Nicholas Sparks romance (which contains the base similarity that someone dies tragically), this three-hankie weepie holds a surprising amount of heart and hope to accompany all the cathartic crying.
Jenn Carter (Jessica Rothe) is just an average college student, getting her master’s degree in psychology and hanging out with friends Megan (Marielle Scott) and Amanda (Chrissie Fit). But a chance meeting in a sports bar brings about the greatest moment of her life: meeting Solomon “Sol” Chau (Harry Shum Jr.), a digital marketing analyst whose true career passion lies in cooking.

Victorian cinemagoers have propelled Christopher Nolan’s Tenet back to the top of the local box office, with exhibitors in the state further encouraged by loosening of capacity restrictions from today.
The Warner Bros. title, now 13 weeks in release Australia-wide, brought in $512,954 from 139 screens, advancing to $13.5 million.
IMAX Melbourne reopened last Thursday with back-to-back screenings of the thriller, with Nolan having recorded an exclusive message for the cinema.
It is one of just 13 sites in the world to screen it on IMAX 1570 film; the majority of Tenet was shot with IMAX 15 perforation 70mm (1570) film cameras.
“All upcoming sessions of Tenet are largely sold out and we will be releasing more tickets this week to accommodate demand,” IMAX Melbourne Gm Richard Morrison tells If.
Tenet‘s result meant Australia was once again the second highest performing market for the film last weekend after the US. Globally, the title has now reached $US356 million.

"Hey, if we get bad news, we should get a dog." Universal Pictures has released another official US trailer for the romantic drama All My Life, from director Marc Meyers. We also featured the UK trailer for this last week. Based on a true story, the film is about a "sweet, fun-loving, newly engaged couple" whose lives change forever when one of them is diagnosed with terminal liver cancer. Their wedding plans are thrown off and then change drastically into something else, but their story inspires "an outpouring of generosity and attention from people around the world who want to celebrate the power of love with them." Jessica Rothe stars with Harry Shum Jr as Jenn and Sol, also joined by Kyle Allen, Chrissie Fit, Jay Pharoah, Marielle Scott, and Keala Settle. While most studios are delaying movies into next year, Universal has added a new film — romantic drama “All My Life” — to the release calendar and plans to open it in U.S. theaters on Dec. 4.
The movie, starring Harry Shum Jr., will be available on premium digital rental services a few weeks later on Dec. 23.
Universal’s decision to debut “All My Life” in theaters during the pandemic comes after the studio forged a pact with AMC, the world’s largest movie theater chain. Under the agreement, Universal can put new movies on premium video-on-demand within three weeks of their theatrical premieres. In return, AMC gets a cut of the digital profits and promises not to boycott Universal movies in retaliation.

Netflix provides an opportunity for many overlooked films to get a new lease on life, from comedies to action movies. The latest picture to get the Netflix bump is We Summon the Darkness, which since being added to the platform a few days ago is already number 6 on the Top 10 most-watched films list. Why, then, is this title doing so well with subscribers?

Shortly after, the female trio invite them back to a remote country house where things rapidly get out of control.

Netflix added two new films today. The first is a Christian Bale-starring period piece set in the Ottoman Empire titled The Promise, the other an Alexandra Daddario-led horror movie called We Summon the Darkness. And here’s what you need to know in case you want to check either one, or even both of them out at some point this weekend.
The Promise first released in 2016. It’s directed by Terry George and based on a script he wrote alongside Robin Swicord. Aside from Bale, who plays a supporting character, the film also stars Oscar Isaac, Charlotte Le Bon, Daniel Giménez Cacho, Shohreh Aghdashloo and Marwan Kenzari.
As mentioned, the movie is set during the final days of the Ottoman Empire. Location aside, it’s centered on a love triangle between a talented medical student, a famous American journalist and a young and beautiful woman. Where fans of...

However, there’s a new movie being added today that’s certainly worth your time. I’m talking We Summon the Darkness, a seriously cool recent horror film that may well have passed you by.
Directed by My Friend Dahmer‘s Marc Meyers, We Summon the Darkness plunges deep into the world of late 1980s heavy metal. We follow Alexis, Val and Beverley, three young women on their way to a metal festival. Things take an ominous turn, however, when they encounter three guys and invite them back to their secluded country home for fun sexy times. From there? Well, I don’t want to spoil it, but it might not take the path you assume it will.
It sounds kinda trashy, but Meyers’ direction elevates it...

While multiplexes may not be opening any time soon, that doesn’t mean genre fans still don’t have other means to take in new horror films these days. Here’s a look at a pair of recent indie movies that I had the chance to check out: We Summon the Darkness from Marc Meyers (My Friend Dahmer) and Witches in the Woods by director Jordan Barker.
We Summon the Darkness: As someone who lived through the Satanic Panic of the ’80s and early ’90s, Marc Myers’ ode to heavy metal lifestyles, We Summon the Darkness, was 100 percent my jam. A brutal and surprising bloodbath that managed to subvert any expectations I had going into it, We Summon the Darkness may stumble a bit here and there tonally, but ultimately delivers a wickedly fun time all the same.

We Summon the Darkness has already started releasing on home entertainment formats. The film, from director Marc Meyers (My Friend Dahmer) and writer Alan Trezza, focuses on a killing spree, taking part across the U.S. Midwest. However, those behind this mayhem might not be who you expect. We Summon the Darkness has a well-rounded cast and includes: Maddie Hasson ("Impulse"), Alexandra Daddario (Baywatch), Keean Johnson and Johnny Knoxville. The film is slated to release today, in the United Kingdom and in a few formats this June, in the U.S. The official trailer, from Lionsgate, is a bit revealing. It not only shows the killers, but the clip also shows: plot points, killing methods and parts of the ending. Heavy metal and horror seem to go hand in hand. Many people who like one, will like the other, so it’s maybe a bit of a surprise that there’s not actually that many movies that link the two. Most recently Deathgasm was ridiculous, loud and fun, the real-life horror story of Lords of Chaos was scarily violent and Devil’s Candy is perhaps the most metal of the three. So We Summon The Darkness has some entertaining company to live up to.
Set in the eighties, a group of three girls meet up with three like-minded guys to enjoy a night of metal, drinking and each others company. But one group have very different ideas to the others about way the night is heading.

Alexis, Val, and Bev are three young women that you probably wouldn’t expect to see driving to a seedy bar in the middle of nowhere to attend a heavy metal concert in the late-1980s. Though they look the part, dressed in black leather, spikes, big hair, and loud makeup, there’s something about these three girls that doesn’t quite click, as they discuss the newest teen magazine, snacks, and makeup tips. Director Marc Meyers takes those characters and inserts them into the middle of a film that is also suffering from an identity crisis.

Arriving on VOD and digital platforms today is the heavy metal horror flick We Summon the Darkness, from director Marc Meyers and writer Alan Trezza. The flick is centered around a trio of women who head out for a metal show and pick up a trio of guys for a fun night of shenanigans that take a deadly turn, leaving them all wondering just who will be left standing by the end of the night.
Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak with Daddario about her involvement with We Summon the Darkness, and she talked about the initial appeal of the project, her thoughts on collaborating with her co-stars and with Meyers, as well as how much hair and wardrobe really felt essential to her when it came time to prepare for her role.

Interview: Director Marc Meyers Discusses Heavy Metal Subculture and More for We Summon The Darkness
This writer was a huge fan of director Marc Meyers’ previous genre-adjacent effort, My Friend Dahmer, which peeled back the layers on real-life killer Jeffrey Dahmer during his teenage years, which is why I was thrilled that he was back to dipping his toes into horror, albeit this time in a much more fictional way for We Summon the Darkness.
The film is centered around a trio of ladies who head out to a heavy metal concert looking for a good time. When they get there, they pair up with a trio of dudes for a long night of partying. But as the festivities roll on, things take an unexpected and deadly turn, leaving all of the metalheads in a fight for their lives.

Heaven and Earth: Meyers Tackles Organized Religion with Droll Thriller
Director Marc Meyers returns to the isolating terrors of the rural Midwest in a different kind of period piece one might likely expect from him with We Summon the Darkness, a late-80s subversive genre film which some could mistake as a comedy-hybrid—but despite the hysterical zaniness of some of its characters, this is merely a superficial veneer of something much darker. A trio of starlets headline this jaunty return to the prevalent fears of the late 80s and early 90s, when satanic cults inspired collective mob mentalities into culturally ordained witch hunts (think the Paradise Lost documentary trilogy from Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky detailing the Robin Hood Hills murders).…...

The movie, set in 1988, opens with three young women driving to a heavy-metal show in their red Jeep Cherokee along a country highway; for a short spell, it feels like a thousand slasher movies made in the kids-in-the-wilderness mode of “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.” Yet there’s something a dash more time specific, less generic, about this trio, even as their potty-mouthed snark points toward the girls-just-want-to-have-what-we-want-to-have vibe of our own era: the leader, Alexis (Alexandra Daddario), with her flashing eyes and reckless ‘tude and inverted crucifix jewelry; Val (Maddie Hasson), a hellion who seems to have styled herself after Madonna by way of Max Max; and Bev (Amy Forsyth), the “nice” quiet one, wayward and a little spooky, who only recently joined up with this drop-dead cool clique.

A film should never be overly reliant upon a twist. When done right, sudden turns in a plot can spice things up, as we’ve seen countless times in cinema. However, the wrong handling of a twist can really mess up a work. Luckily, despite leaning too heavily upon a twist almost everyone will see coming, We Summon the Darkness manages to be a lot of fun. As much as the movie follows the rules of the horror/thriller genre, it does so with a sense of humor that helps set it apart. While not a comedy, the flick knows how to have a good time, and that goes a long way. Plus, any showcase for the talented Alexandra Daddario is an added bonus. It hits VOD this weekend and is well worth a look. The movie is a tongue in cheek horror/thriller hybrid, starting out as one thing,...

A rash of 1980s-era satanic ritual killings puts Pastor John Henry Butler (Johnny Knoxville) front and center in rural America’s consciousness because his church is doing its very best to combat the disintegration of society with the word of God. Just as his increased television appearances rally the Bible Belt to his cause (treating rock music and other not quite “demonic” practices as sinful weapons destroying their children’s souls), however, they also work to embolden those he is forsaking. More than calling out the as yet unknown murderers for their crimes, he’s pointing fingers at a youth culture that already exists as a response to his mode of fear-mongering and idiotic censorship. So of course they’ll rebel further by running away to embrace their heavy metal lives more.

It’s Easier for a Camel…: Meyers and Moverman Craft Serviceable, Familiar Remake
Although it pulls no punches in its re-working of Paolo Virzi’s 2013 title Human Capital, this English language rehash from director Marc Meyers finds itself in safe, capable hands with screenwriter Oren Moverman on board. For those unfamiliar with the original, an adaptation of the Stephen Amidon novel, it may seem there’s a certain level of proficiency and ingenuity here in this sometimes-vicious class conflict melodrama. However, Meyers version tends to pale in comparison to its original despite a high-profile cast, and the narrative’s non-linear puzzle pieces leading up to one detrimental moment doesn’t play as effortlessly this time around, if perhaps due to the tug and pull afforded some of the more noted cast members.…...

A lot is happening in Human Capital, a new film directed by Marc Meyers.
Initially an Italian film by Paolo Virzi loosely based on the 2004 novel from Stephen Amidon, Human Capital centers on two families brought together by the fleeting relationship between their teenagers.
Liev Schrieber plays Drew, a struggling real estate agent, husband, and father whose brief history suggests he has delusions of grandeur and get-rich-quick schemes.
Depending on the market, real estate can be that, but Drew chose real estate because his father instilled in him to do something society deems necessary for his life's work.
Drew chose real estate over coffins, he jokes.
But Drew has a secret that comes to light when he drives his daughter, Shannon (Maya Hawke) to visit her boyfriend, Jamie (Fred Hechinger), the son of a well-to-do hedge fund manager, Quint, and his wife, Carrie, played by Peter Sarsgaard and Marisa Tomei.

As theaters shutter and big studio films postpone wide theatrical releases, indie and arthouse films are trying their best to navigate the waters of the coronavirus outbreak. Like big banner titles, many indie films that were set to release this weekend are opting to delay their debuts, while a handful are opting for a digital release — which is often common for the specialty space.
The Mangurama/Abramorama title Dosed was set to be released in theaters in New York starting Friday and was set to expand on March 27 in Los Angeles. Instead, they have opted to do a global release on digital with 10% from every purchase of the film going to coronavirus disaster relief, which will be matched by Facebook. Once theaters reopen, they will pull the film from streaming and resume theatrical release.

There’s a structural choice at the center of Human Capital that either sabotages a good movie or elevates a bad one to the level of just being a mixed bag. I can’t quite decide which it is. Early on, there’s some interesting potential here, before giving way to a lot of mediocrity, before hinting at something better towards the end. Again, it’s that choice of structure, which we’ll get into below, that makes for at least some degree of a disconnect. At the end of the day, a really interesting cast can only do so much here. Hitting VOD tomorrow, it can’t quite get over the hump. The film is an ensemble drama, or really a melodrama, about a number of bad choices over a short frame of time. Two very different families are brought together when Shannon (Maya Hawke) dates Jamie (Fred Hechinger...
