On the JoBlo Movies YouTube channel, we will be posting one full movie every day of the week, giving viewers the chance to watch them entirely free of charge. Today’s Free Movie of the Day is a sci-fi thriller with a dose of comedy and a knock-off Freddy Krueger-type running around to bring some attempts at scares along the way. The movie is called Portal Runner, and no, it doesn’t have anything to do with the 2001 video game of the same title.

Coming to us from director Cornelia Duryée, who was working from a script crafted by her assistant J.D. Henning and her son Tallis Moore, Portal Runner tells the following story:

Jumping straight into the action from the first second, Portal Runner introduces us to a 15 year old boy, Nolan, who has the ability to travel through parallel worlds with the use of mirrors. Unfortunately for him, there is an evil being chasing through these worlds, and when he gets stuck in a world with a sister he has never met, he must convince her to help him and the rest of their family.

There have obviously been sci-fi movies that involve travelling through parallel worlds and universes but I can’t say I have personally seen that many of them and maybe that’s part of the reason that Portal Runner felt highly original to me. I have said previously that...

If only this could live up to that potential! Nolan is a boy on the run through parallel worlds, trying to stay one step ahead of a monstrous evil that destroyed his family. But, when he winds up stuck in a world with a furious older sister he's never met before, he realizes she may be the key to defeating his adversary. Why does this sound like the plot of a "Rick & Morty" episode? Starring Sloane Morgan Siegel as Nolan, with Carol Roscoe, Brian S. Lewis, Denny McAuliffe, & Elise Eberle. Exclusive: Actress Sarah Shahi stars in tonight’s premiere of Reverie on NBC, but she is already making moves towards the big screen. Shahi is set to star as the lead in the indie drama Language Arts and will star in the indie comedy Judy Small.

Directed by Cornelia Moore (Dark Horse) and produced by Larry Estes, Language Arts follows Allison Forche-Marlow (Shahi), a beautiful, bright, determined, and organized, who never gives up trying to heal her autistic son, whom she fiercely loves, no matter what it demands of everyone.

Second edition to open with sports doc Dennis Viollet - A United Man and close with the international premiere of There Should be Rules.

The Manchester International Film Festival (March 3-6) has announced its official selection this morning and will open with the international premiere of sports documentary Dennis Viollet - A United Man.

The film is a portrait of the late Manchester United football player who survived the notorious Munich air crash of 1958 and went on to become not only the captain of Manchester United but also the first British footballer to pioneer the sport worldwide and bring ‘soccer’ to the Us.

The film is directed by his daughter, Rachel Viollet, and features commentary from footballing greats including Sir Alex Ferguson; Brian Robson; Dennis Law; Nobby Stiles; Wilf McGuinness; Paddy Crerand; and Mike Summerbee.

Gregg Sulkin, Cary Elwes, Samantha Mathis, Margaret Colin, Camryn Manheim and Robert Picardo also star in the adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s novel of the same name.

Random Media svp of acquisitions Bobby Rock negotiated the deal with producer Larry Estes. Camilla Dickinson premiered at the Seattle International Film Festival in 2012.

Aj Wedding’s 2014 comedy-horror The Jokesters centres on a group of pranksters whose farewell surprise on a departing member spirals out of control.

Fouad Mikati, director of the cartoonish action flick Operation: Endgame is switching up genres for his second film, the psychological thriller Return to Sender. Having just Rosamund Pike and Nick Noltecast its lead roles last week, the film is already in production in New Orleans. Newberry and National Book Award- winning author Madeleine L’Engle (1918 – 2007) will always be remembered in the world of juvenile fiction. As the creator of A Wrinkle In Time and its various sequels, L’Engle established herself for decades as a unique and prolific favorite of younger readers. Based on one of her earlier and more semi-autobiographical novels, the new film Camilla Dickinson is a coming-of-age story that reflects the special quality that made L’Engle so appealing: a memorable heroine.

But she wrote dozens of young adult novels that are lesser known, and now one of them, Camilla Dickinson, will have its chance to go up on the big screen. The dashing Wizards of Waverly Place star Gregg Sulkin ("dashing" is like "charming," but for Brits), who continues his run at Disney with this weekend's TV movie Avalon High, has signed on to star in Camilla Dickerson, an adaptation of the 1951 Madeline L'Engle ("A Wrinkle in Time") book. Australian actress Adelaide Clemens will play the title role, a teen whose parents are splitting up and trying to win over her affection. Aggravated by the whole mess, she turns to a rebellious boy (Sulkin) whose parents are also divorced. Cary Elwes (The Princess Bride) and Samantha Mathis (Super Mario Brothers) will play Mr. and Mrs. Dickerson. Writer-director Cornelia Moore begins filming in Spokane, Washington next week.

My absolute favorite film genre is the zombie movie (along with French new wave and rip-n-strip wrestling) and I think I've seen every single zombie or zombie-related movie ever made, including the Italian classics, low-budget independents, and of course the entire series from zombie God George Romero (the original Dawn of the Dead is the greatest horror film ever made.)

I've even seen Emmanuelle on Zombie Island ... soft and hardcore versions.

My point is that I thought there was nothing a zombie movie could do to surprise me ... until I saw Zombies of Mass Destruction.

Zmd is guilty of the usual low-budget zombie film offenses - bad (sometimes horrendous) acting and an uneasy mix of horror and comedy (which Shaun of the Dead did perfectly, but is a tricky proposition). But it has something no other zombie film has ever given us - gay heroes.
