Brett Goldstein and Imogen Poots star as two star-crossed lovers in director William Bridges’ near-future drama. Here’s our All Of You review.
All Of You, director and co-writer William Bridges’ tender romantic drama, ponders the question of whether love can be defined and determined by a test. The specifics of The Test aren’t explained, but the film is set in a near-future London where science has been able to develop such a thing. All Of You isn’t a sci-fi film, per se, but it asks us if we’re willing to go down this path of predetermined relationships in the future.
Brett Goldstein – who co-wrote – plays Simon, a journalist who is clearly harbouring feelings for his best friend Laura (Imogen Poots). Laura decides to take The Test and is soon paired with Lukas (Steven Cree). Simon does his best to move on and push his feelings for...

Many films have dared to ask if a man and a woman can ever just be friends, but very few have managed to answer in the affirmative. For most of its first half, All of You appeared destined to wind up another addition to this romantic canon, as journalist Simon (Brett Goldstein) slowly realizes his best friend since university, Laura (Imogen Poots), might be the love of his life. So far, so uninteresting, even if the conversational writing and grounded performances helped elevate it above the Richard Curtis brand of high-concept tearjerker. Then, around the midway point, Simon and Laura are prematurely forced to confront this elephant in the room––at which point the screenplay, written by Goldstein and director William Bridges, reveals itself far more emotionally intelligent and less-idealistic in its exploration of their changing relationship dynamics than the lovelorn first act would suggest.

When attempting to break into a nascent film industry, many filmmakers place their bets in tried and tested formats. Family dramas, romantic comedies, action thrillers. But, in the Arab region, where countries like Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates are still taking their first steps into building a robust film industry, filmmakers are tapping into highly connected, media-driven young audiences with their films.
Ahead of the 11th edition of the Sharjah Intl. Film Festival for Children and Youth, taking place between Oct. 6 and 12 in the UAE, three filmmakers spoke with Variety about the importance of specialized festivals in the region and the challenges that still lie ahead when it comes to making films for children and young audiences in an Arab world that is becoming increasingly Westernized.

The thriller Rebel Ridge was announced back in 2019, but took five years to make its way out into the world because the production was delayed by the pandemic lockdowns, then by the departure of lead actor John Boyega a few weeks into filming, reportedly due to “family reasons.” Saulnier has said that the making of Rebel Ridge saw him “slamming right into the Hollywood I’ve tried to avoid,” and, “We came back three years in a row to make that movie.” But the troubles were worth it, because the finished film was well-received (you can read our 8/10 review Here) and a success on Netflix. Now, Saulnier is looking forward to his next movie – and he’s going back to his roots to tell a fun Halloween story.

Saleh Bakri commands the screen as a teacher promoting nonviolence, who falls for British volunteer Imogen Poots while trying to protect a student looking for revenge
Here is a drama-thriller from British-Palestinian film-maker Farah Nabulsi, set in the West Bank: a geopolitical vale of angry tears. There is some pretty broad-brush storytelling here, but it is really well acted, particularly by its male lead, Saleh Bakri, who might be remembered from his performance in Elia Suleiman’s autobiographical film The Time That Remains, playing the director’s father Fuad. (I also remember him in the 2013 Sicilian mob thriller Salvo.)
Here Bakri plays Basem, a hardworking, idealistic and careworn Palestinian teacher of English, estranged from his wife (who is now living in Hebron) and troubled by his past. Basem has evolved away from his former life of radical resistance, now espousing nonviolent action; he is therefore deeply worried by a neighbouring...

Imogen Poots has a confession. “I drew a man’s penis too big recently,” she says, her anime eyes widening. The 35-year-old London-born actor is sitting at home in New York in an olive baseball cap. Willygate occurred at a life-drawing class she attends in Brooklyn. “The art teacher said I needed to get my proportions right, so I erased what I’d done. But then the model, who looked like a young Sam Shepard, came over and saw where the original penis had been, and realised it had been downsized.” She is pondering whether to find another class. “There’s a bunch all over the city but I’m running out of options.

“All Of You” is a slim, modest, 100-minute love story starring Brett Goldstein and Imogen Poots. But in its decade-spanning structure and proclamations of “one true love” and “true soul mate,” it very much wants to be “Doctor Zhivago” or another such sweeping romance. Only it obviously isn’t and leaves you with a feeling of much ado about nothing. William Bridges makes his feature directorial debut from a script he co-wrote with Goldstein, based on the short “For Life” they had made years earlier.

“All of You” is set in a slightly futuristic society whose technological and society-altering centerpiece seems to be a test that can positively identify each person’s true soulmate. A pair of longtime platonic friends played by Brett Goldstein and Imogen Poots have differing opinions about the test – she wants to take it, he thinks it’s ridiculous – but in the opening scene, he gives her the money to do it, and by doing so sets the story in motion.
And from that moment on, the soulmate test is pretty much irrelevant to “All of You,” which premiered this week at the Toronto International Film Festival. It’s a classic cinematic MacGuffin, important to get things going and insignificant to what happens from that point on, which turns out to be a decades-spanning, vaguely “When Harry Met Sally”-style story of a friendship that could be something more if the...

The movie is adapted from Lidia Yuknavitch’s best-selling 2011 memoir of the same name, with Stewart taking screenplay co-writing credits with Andy Mingo.
A tale of turning trauma into art, the personal story follows protagonist Lidia from her earliest childhood memories in the Pacific Northwest, through explosive misfires and mistakes, children that almost-were, toxic relationships, art heroes, wins and losses.
Drifting in the water of Lidia’s memories, the film follows her journey to becoming a professional writer and repossessing her story by writing one she can live with. The film is billed as “an in-depth exploration of sexuality,...

Simon is secretly — but not subtly — in love with his best friend Laura, which makes sense because she’s played by a vivid and endearing Imogen Poots. Laura has never seemed to think of Simon in those terms, which makes less sense because he’s played by a sweet and strapping Brett Goldstein . I suppose there could be a number of sensible reasons why she hasn’t considered a romance with the boy from uni who really gets her, but the only one that matters to William Bridges’ “All of You” is this: Laura and Simon live in the age of Soul Connex, a test that can scientifically determine a person’s soulmate.
Laura is determined to pair off with the right man, and Simon is so eager for her to realize who the right man really is that he agrees to pay for her test and accompany her to the clinic.

Jeremy Saulnier had a pretty solid three-movie run with Murder Party, Blue Ruin, and Green Room. And while those first two films are great, I think Saulnier surprised everyone with Green Room to such an extent that watching clips of that film befuddles people till this day. I mean, in 2015, Patrick Stewart was Professor Xavier to a lot of us who were still teenagers. So, seeing him as the leader of a group of neo-Nazis was nothing short of a shocker. And while the performances from Alia Shawkat and the late Anton Yelchin were expected, the grit shown by Imogen Poots, Callum Turner, and Joe Cole was stunning. On top of that, the claustrophobia of that one-location setting made for a nerve-wracking visual experience. So, the expectations from Saulnier’s fourth feature film, Hold the Dark, were through the roof. Sadly, the results were not satisfactory. Now, he is back with Rebel Ridge,...

The series, which blended elements of paranormal mystery with rugged rural drama, will not return for a third season on Prime Video, as confirmed by an individual close to the decision.
Created by Brian Watkins and executive produced by a team including Brad Pitt, the show followed Royal Abbott (Brolin), a Wyoming rancher fighting for his land and family after discovering a mysterious dark void on his property. The second season, which premiered on May 16, delved deeper into the Abbott family’s struggles following the disappearance of their granddaughter, raising the stakes and intensifying the enigma surrounding them.

Outer Range, the sci-fi drama series our own Alex Maidy called the weirdest show you’re not watching, has been cancelled after two seasons. With so many TV shows out there, it’s always a shame when a good show slips through the cracks, which feels like what has happened with Outer Range.
The series stars Josh Brolin as Royal Abbott, a rancher fighting for his territory and family at the edge of Wyoming’s wilderness who must grapple with the unknown after discovering an unfathomable mystery on his land in the form of a dark void. The mystery deepens in the second season as Royal and his wife Cecelia struggle to keep their family together in the aftermath of their granddaughter’s sudden disappearance. The stakes have never been higher for the Abbotts, who now face threats on multiple fronts.

Is there anything worse than a show you love being canceled?
Just give a hearty "no" your best rebel yell. We all agree.
Today, Amazon has decided there will be no more Outer Range.
Outer Range is one of the last remaining unique shows on TV.

One by one, the shows that challenge expectations and entertain beyond lame drama are taking their leave, and we don't like it one bit.
Outer Range Season 1 was released episodically, which allowed fans to ponder the mystery, discuss theories, and enjoy the slow reveal of its many layers.
For Outer Range Season 2, Prime Video chose the drop-all-at-once route.
While that's great for binge-watchers, it does nothing for those who love chatting and theorizing about their favorite shows.
It also fails to keep viewers around for the longer term.

Josh Brolin, the 56-year-old Oscar nominee for his supporting turn in “Milk,” co-star of Best Picture-winner “No Country For Old Men,” and Barbra Streisand’s stepson, can now add director to his resume. The slow-moving first season of Amazon’s sci-fi Western “Outer Range,” ostensibly about a void in the middle of a pasture owned by Royal Abbott (Oscar nominee Josh Brolin), didn’t answer many (or really any) of the questions it put forth. By the end of Season 1 we knew for certain that the gaping hole in the ground allowed people to travel through time, but little else was revealed or explained. The show was comfortable to let viewers quietly ponder the meaning of life, the universe, and everything as its many interconnected subplots unfolded. It was also a stunning advertisement for New Mexico (standing in for Wyoming) thanks to the wide sweeping vistas that acted as the show’s backdrop. But new showrunner Charles Murray knows we can’t subsist on beautiful scenery and vague discussions about time forever, so Season 2 — the seven episodes of which are now streaming on...

Many shows in TV history have lived and died by their mysterious nature. Ongoing storylines in classics such as The X-Files, Lost, and Fringe had fans theorizing about main characters’ fates, the creative team’s intentions, or the deeper meaning of it all. Recently, shows such as From, Severance, and Yellowjackets have the same kind of devout following, and the same overarching enigmas that keep audiences coming back for answers.
When looking back at Outer Range’s first season, it’s easy to understand why the show was picked up for a second, and why the show had to come back – to unravel some of those riddles that season one left behind. While the sophomore season might have created more questions than answers, at least some of the puzzles have been solved. But don’t worry, if you’re still feeling out of the loop,...
