She was educated at Convent of Mercy National School Ardee and Ardee Community School. She was the first woman to qualify in the discipline of Agriculture Economics at University College Dublin.

She was elected on the first count at the European Elections in June 2004 and currently serves on the EU Parliament's Agriculture and Rural Development Committee and also on the Budget and Petitions Committees (2004-2008).

She is married to Tom Duff and the couple have four children, twins Orlaith and James (born 1994), Áine (born 1997) and Cathal (born 2001).
