Before unleashing a cruel fate upon its characters — one of the worst in recent horror memory — The Borderlands leads the audience down a different path, insensibly alluding to what all lies ahead. The plot breadcrumbs of Elliot Goldner’s 2013 film are only more discernible after the fact. Until that momentous reveal, this plays out as a standard story of believers and nonbelievers investigating the religious unknown and finding more than they ever thought possible. What these unfortunate souls unearth is deeply disturbing.
Renamed Final Prayer in some parts, this British film has grown steadily in renown despite its small beginnings. Recently, Guillermo del Toro put The Borderlands on more radars; the popular filmmaker deemed it an “unknown gem.” Even before obtaining such a great endorsement, Goldner’s first feature (his only one to date) was applauded for its approach to first-person and folk-horror storytelling. More high praise: The Borderlands has...

A drama series based on the infamous phone-hacking scandal that took down Rupert Murdoch’s newspaper the News of the World is in development at Rise Films.
Titled “Thank You & Goodbye,” the show tells the “inside story behind the fall of the world’s oldest Sunday newspaper, the News of the World — from the perspective of the tabloid journalists and private investigators at the heart of it all — and the extraordinary events that took place next,” according to the series’ description. “Set against the dying embers of the age of print journalism, ‘Thank You & Goodbye’ is an epic story of criminal practice deployed on an industrial scale that becomes a powerful tale of redemption — with a closely guarded final sting in its tail.”
The series, which does not yet have a network or platform attached to it, comes from director Saul Dibb (“The Salisbury Poisonings”), writer Luke Neal (“Des”) and executive producer Teddy Leifer.

The story behind the U.K.’s notorious phone hacking scandal is coming to the small screen.
Director Saul Dibb and writer Luke Neal are developing a multi-part series entitled “Thank You & Goodbye,” which will detail the fall of the world’s oldest Sunday newspaper, Rupert Murdoch’s News of the World.
Dibb is the BAFTA-nominated director of BBC drama “The Salisbury Poisonings,” while Neal wrote ITV drama “Des.” Rise Films’ Teddy Leifer is executive producing the series.
The scandal, which was recently featured in BBC documentary “The Rise of the Murdoch Dynasty,” first broke when it was revealed that a private investigator hired by the paper had hacked the voicemail of Milly Dowler, a murdered 13-year-old schoolgirl. The subsequent investigation resulted in the arrest of over 100 people, the imprisonment of Downing Street’s director of communications, the resignation of the Metropolitan Police Commissioner, an unprecedented public inquiry into the...

Exclusive: Oscar and Emmy-winning British production company Rise Films is developing the first major television drama series on the phone-hacking scandal that shook the very foundations of Rupert Murdoch’s media empire in the early noughties.
Rise Films, which made Oscar-winning Netflix doping documentary Icarus, will use the series to provide an insider’s perspective on the industrial-scale illegal information gathering at British tabloid newspaper, the News Of The World, after securing exclusive access to the journalists and private investigators who intercepted the voicemails of Hollywood stars, politicians, and murder victims.
The series will be penned by Luke Neal, the breakout writer behind ITV’s David Tennant drama, Des, which told the story of British serial killer Dennis Nilsen and was the broadcaster’s highest-rated drama of 2020. Saul Dibb, the helmer of The Salisbury Poisonings, BBC One’s most-watched drama in six years, has been attached to direct the phone-hacking series.

Serial killer dramas have a grimy reputation. The phrase conjures up lurid magazine headlines promising Sick! Twisted! Depravity! and Never-Seen-Before Crime Scene Photos! Think ‘true crime serial killer’, you think of Jack the Ripper tours and David from Psychoville poring over victim stats and working himself to a froth over all the gory details.
To shake off those associations and emerge as nuanced, intelligent and non-exploitative, a drama has to work hard. It has to foreground the human cost and trace a story that doesn’t revel in gore. It requires scripts that build in context and narrative balance. It needs empathy with the victims, and a central performance that captures the horrid anomaly of the killer without lending rock star glamour. Most of all, it needs a purpose other than as a ratings draw.

The “Doctor Who,” “Broadchurch,” and “Good Omens” actor will star as Nilsen, known as Des, alongside Daniel Mays (“Line of Duty”), who plays the cop investigating the case. Jason Watkins (“The Crown”) is cast as Brian Masters, who penned the serial killer’s biography, with his full cooperation.

Luke Neal wrote the series about the killer, who murdered boys and young men in his flat. Nilsen went undetected until cops investigate fragments of human flesh and bone clogging the drains.

Krypton Season 2, Episode 9
For the penultimate episode of Season 2 of Krypton, and it’s a big one, it’s Doomsday for the good guys in the action-packed “Blood Moon,” where a moon-sized loss is suffered, and a main character has a brilliant death – leaving the resistance broken, and hopeless.
It is only fitting to begin with the surprising death of Kem. Rasmus Hardiker has been excellent as Kem since Season 1. He is a smart ass from the streets, but there has always been a vulnerability and sadness to the character. This season’s journey has been satisfying as we’ve seen him become a soldier, then a leader, and ultimately a selfless warrior who sacrifices himself for his friend, and the cause.

Superman actor Henry Cavill stars in The Witcher, Netflix's ambitious television series adaptation of the famed fantasy franchise.
Netflix’s The Witcher is conjuring a live-action manifestation of the popular fantasy novel series of Andrzej Sapkowski, which, of course, spawned the popular video game series.
Notably, it also marks a monumental turn for its star, Henry Cavill, who has permanently put away his Superman suit, and shaved that pesky Mission: Impossible – Fallout mustache, for a television series that matches if not exceeds the grandiosity of his big screen run as the Man of Steel.
While The Witcher games has taken some liberties with the novel source material, this television series will feature quite a few familiar faces and storylines. As Sapkowski expressed in a statement:

Xbox is getting in on the original programming game with an upcoming live-action digital series titled Halo Nightfall, which will debut its first episode during the live-stream HaloFest event on November 10th. Xbox One owners who pick up Halo: The Master Chief Collection the next day will have access to the entire series.
Based on the wildly successful video game franchise, Nightfall boasts a pretty stellar pedigree – it was executive produced by Ridley Scott (Alien, Black Hawk Down), directed by Sergio Mimica-Gezza (Battlestar Galactica, Falling Skies), and scribed by Paul Scheuring, the creator of Prison Break. In particular, one can see Scott’s fingerprints all over Nightfall in the below trailer – it showcases the same sort of sci-fi gothic horror feel that the director established in Alien and Prometheus.

In one of its most ambitious undertakings to date, Microsoft is moving forward with the live-action Halo: Nightfall TV series, which will debut for the Xbox One this November. Hailing from Ridley Scott’s Scott Free Productions and Microsoft’s 343 Industries, the five-part series is set between the fourth and upcoming fifth Halo video games. Rural Devon's the setting for the off-beat found-footage horror, The Borderlands. Here's Ryan's review...
Theoretically, anyone with a camera and a few friends can make a found-footage horror movie. But as countless lesser examples of the sub-genre have proved in the past, it’s relatively easy to point a wobbling camera at people stumbling about in a dark room, and far more difficult to make the resulting footage scary or entertaining to watch. The Borderlands, the feature debut from British director Elliot Goldner, includes all the shaky-cam hallmarks you’d expect, but thanks to some great writing and a trio of off-beat characters, it manages to stand out from the supernatural horror crowd.
In a small cottage in rural Devon, self-confessed tech geek Gray (frequent Ben Wheatley collaborator Robin Hill) busily straps cameras to both himself and just about every room in the quaint little building.

Elliot Goldner directs this British horror following a team of specialists from the Vatican who are drawn to a remote West Country church by reports of mysterious occurrences in the area.
The Borderlands sees a deacon from the Catholic Church (Gordon Kennedy) and a sound engineer (Robin Hill) dispatched to a small and ancient church in rural England to verify the claims of miraculous occurrences. Though Father Crellick (Luke Neal) has video footage of items apparently being moved around inside the church by supernatural forces, the deacon is a sceptic by nature and wants more conclusive evidence. He is later joined by another church official (Aidan McArdle) as shit goes from mysterious to frightening to crazy. They duly set up more cameras inside the ancient building, but...

The recent passing of John Hughes has elicited fond memories of his legacy. Comedies like Sixteen Candles, Breakfast Club, Weird Science, and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off captured the essence of teen angst. His characters, awkward and clumsy, were filled with doubts, fears, and desires.
The complex psyches of teens have been explored often in the horror genre as well, but often as a device used in the systematic set-up of a violent and bloody end. In Battle Royale, for example, the plight of each teen is revealed through flashback only moments before said teen meets brutal demise. In movies like Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and Halloween, teens are routinely punished for their promiscuity and rebelliousness; while in the new generation of torture/porn, kids are lured like dogs into unbearable situations.
But the best coming of age stories are born from scripts that borrow from...
