In the closing days of the 2012 presidential campaign, Gregg Alexander and Danielle Brisebois of the New Radicals teamed up with Ne-Yo, the Goo Goo Dolls’ Johnny Rzeznik, Herbie Hancock, Delta Rae, and Natasha Bedingfield to create the Barack Obama campaign anthem “Forward.” Twelve years later, Alexander and Brisebois have updated the song as “Forward (We’Re Not Going Back!)” for Kamala Harris, joined once again by Ne-Yo and Herbie Hancock. The Art of Elysium, a nonprofit organization that focuses on healing and inspiring through art, will honor filmmaker Lee Daniels with the Visionary Award at its Heaven Gala, which will take place on March 22, 2025.
The Los Angeles event is a one-night-only art installation conceived and curated by the chosen Visionary, who creates his or her idea of “heaven on Earth” as it relates to The Art of Elysium’s four main disciplines: fashion and design, music and movement, theatre and film, and visual arts. Daniels will envision his “heaven” as eternal peace.
“Being asked to envision heaven could not have come up at more inopportune time, yet the perfect timing in every way,” Daniels said in a statement. “I was in the midst of releasing a film and being pulled in every direction imaginable. Even making the time to talk through details seemed impossible. Yet, when the time was made,...

Artists4Ceasefire, the industry collective that has been pushing for an end to the current war in Gaza (and whose pin badges were worn by various attendees at this year’s Oscars ceremony), is spearheading a new initiative calling for a halt to illegal arms sales to Israel.
Through a partnership with artist Shepard Fairey and several humanitarian organizations — including Oxfam America, ActionAid USA and War Child Alliance/Children in Conflict — the group has launched a call to action bearing the message “Ceasefire Now, Stop Weapons, Save Lives” that urges the halt to what it says are “weapons transfers that violate U.S. and international law.” Such laws state it is illegal to supply or use weapons to commit “grave human rights violations,” including striking schools or hospitals, restricting humanitarian aid, and killing children.

Vice presidential nominee Tim Walz concluded his DNC speech Wednesday by walking off the stage to Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World.”
Despite the track’s litigious history on the campaign trail, CNN’s Kaitlan Collins reported that Walz sought Young’s approval to use “Rockin’ in the Free World” — one of the Minnesota governor’s favorite songs — and that the rocker himself personally authorized its usage.
A rep for Young did not immediately respond to Rolling Stone’s request for comment at press time.

There was once a time when The Simpsons was considered to be so crass and uncultured that the show was publicly derided by America’s First Family, and the mere sight of Bart Simpson on a T-shirt was cause for scandal.
But that’s all changed now. The show has been accepted as a keystone of contemporary culture, and one of the greatest comedic works of all-time. And there’s perhaps no greater sign of just how well-respected the show is now than the fact that there’s currently a Simpsons-themed exhibit in a legit European art gallery.
The Karikaturmuseum Krems is the “first and only museum for political caricature, satire and critical cartoon art in Austria.” And to celebrate the 35th anniversary of The Simpsons, it’s presenting a special exhibition entitled “Here Comes Bart! While filling in for the host on Jimmy Kimmel Live! this week, comic actor Anthony Anderson noted that the shooting at a Pennsylvania political rally over the weekend that saw a bullet graze former President Donald Trump’s ear is no laughing matter. But, he pointed out, some of the merchandise seen online in many instances is truly hilarious.
“Everybody’s still shaken up by the tragic events at the Trump rally on Saturday,” Anderson said as he opened his guest host monologue. “You know, all weekend, I kept thinking, I wonder what Jimmy Kimmel is going to say about this on Monday. And then I was like, ‘Oh, I am Jimmy Kimmel on Monday!'”
Anderson told a few tepid gags but then launched into a favorite of Kimmel’s show: mining the web for some of the strangest or lowest common denominator items. This time, the cash-in is...

Across the sprawling city of Los Angeles — within feet of children’s bedrooms, playgrounds, office buildings, and places of worship — there’s an oil well, exuding toxins that put nearby residents at risk of asthma attacks, reproductive issues, and multiple types of cancer. The evidence stacked against Big Oil is alarming, and after more than 130 years since drilling began in the town of flowers and sunshine, the Los Angeles city council unanimously voted to phase out drilling in January 2021.
In response, oil and gas companies collected enough signatures for a referendum to challenge the legislation.

Jamie Reid, the artist and graphic designer whose work for the Sex Pistols defined the punk aesthetic, has died at 76.
His gallerist, John Marchant, confirmed his death. In a statement, he was described as an “artist, iconoclast, anarchist, punk, hippie, rebel and romantic. Jamie leaves behind a beloved daughter Rowan, a granddaughter Rose, and an enormous legacy.”
Reid met future Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren at Croydon Art School. That relationship blossomed into a collaboration on artwork for the Sex Pistols.
Reid’s best known work was for the Sex Pistols covers including the pink and yellow text of their only album, “Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols,” and “God Save the Queen,” the hit single banned by the BBC. The latter featured a Cecil Beaton photo portrait of Queen Elizabeth II defaced by Reid.

Funko, less than a year after acquiring high-end collectibles brand Mondo, has wound down Mondo’s current movie-poster business and let go several employees — including Mondo co-founders Mitch Putnam and Rob Jones, Variety has confirmed.
Mondo, based in Austin, Texas, was founded in 2004 and was previously a subsidiary of indie theater chain Alamo Drafthouse before Funko inked a deal to buy it last year for $14 million. Mondo had gained a strong following for its limited-edition screen-printed movie posters. Notable artists who worked with Mondo have included Olly Moss, Shepard Fairey, Ken Taylor and Kevin Tong. Sources said that Mondo’s vinyl records and collectibles businesses are intact.
In addition to Putnam and Jones, Mondo senior creative director Eric Garza also has been laid off. For now, it appears that Mondo’s poster division is defunct; however, a source familiar with the situation said Funko expects Mondo to continue producing posters going forward.

Henry Rollins is teasing a mysterious new project he plans to launch in Nashville, and spoiler alert, it’s not a concert. The former Black Flag frontman told readers of The Guardian that he’s done making music, but that 14 months from now, something he’s been working on for a couple of years will finally come to fruition.
Rollins hasn’t performed as part of a band since the early aughts, only sporadically popping up at friends’ shows or appearing on others’ records. When asked why he stepped back from making music, the artist replied, “I stopped processing ideas in terms of lyrics. One day, I woke up and thought: ‘I’m done.’ My manager flipped out, but I’ve never looked back. Ondi Timoner’s documentary The New Americans: Gaming a Revolution surely doesn’t lack for ambition.
In a jam-packed 102 minutes, The New Americans aims to explain a string of recent Internet-fueled financial misadventures; to somewhat update the meditations on Internet-connected communities and online social anxiety that were part of her acclaimed 2009 film We Live in Public; and to link those things to a toxicity that culminated in the chaos of January 6, 2021.
The New Americans takes a meme-ified approach to understanding the meme-ified intersection of online culture, the financial sector and the rise of different strains of extremism. But like a Xerox of a Xerox of a Xerox, the relationship between the documentary and the information it’s attempting to elucidate becomes a blur.
The film wants to separate the signal from the noise in the public discourse, but it’s so enamored with the sensory madness that it just becomes more cacophony.

The pandemic cratered the tourism and convention business in Los Angeles. So the agency in charge of reviving those standards has turned to the man who brought an image of “Hope” to the world.
The Los Angeles Tourism & Convention board enlisted famed L.A. artist Shepard Fairey (best known for his image of President Barack Obama underneath the word “Hope) and his Studio Number One, along with designers House Industries, to create a new logo and brand identity for the city.
Fairey’s work marks the first update to the logo in a decade. It features the city’s name in rainbow colors with a setting sun. The image will be used in a forthcoming ad campaign that hopes to goose the city’s allure.
Talking to Fast Company, Fairey admitted capturing the cities flavor was difficult.

Musician, DJ and director Moby is getting the documentary treatment in a new behind-the-scenes film. “Moby Doc” is described as a surrealist look, narrated by Moby himself, as he reflects on his turbulent personal life and iconic music from underground punk bands to chart-topping solo artist, and from struggling addict to vegan activist.
Directed and edited by Rob Bravler (“Cure for Pain: The Mark Sandman Story”), the film features interviews with David Lynch, David Bowie and Shepard Fairey along with concert footage, utilizing a unique blend of re-enactments, interviews, and archival footage.

Ahead of the 2020 presidential election, Heart’s Ann Wilson has dropped a cover of Steve Earle’s “The Revolution Starts Now.”

Indecline, an activist collective based out of Las Vegas, Nevada, first made a name for themselves in 2016. That summer, inspired by the farcical campaign of Donald Trump — and the art they’d seen during the election season, most notably Illma Gore’s portrait of the future 45, painted in her menstrual blood — the group put on a cross-country show of guerilla art. Early one August morning, teams in five cities simultaneously unveiled unauthorized, six-foot-five statues of Donald Trump, naked, his manhood comically small against the grotesque folds of his nude body.

Speaking out in behalf of a balding tiger with the same name as her character in the hit TV series Friday Night Lights, actor Minka Kelly sent a letter to the owners of the Waccatee Zoo this week, pleading for help for Lila, who has been documented incessantly licking her bare skin and pacing back and forth inside her cramped cage — both of which are signs of psychological distress and physical discomfort.
