The entertainment industry is in the midst of a general contraction after last year’s SAG and WGA strikes, but there’s one sector that continues to thrive: holiday-themed TV movies! Granted, last year’s 116 has very slightly declined to a mere 110 in 2024, but that should still provide you with enough distraction to minimize your obligation to make conversation with loved ones.
There are probably sicko fans out there who commit to watching every single one of these titles. I am, however, normal, and thus limited my in-depth investigation to a single platform: Netflix, which has released “only” five new Christmas comedies. Which (if any) should be your next watch? This guide should help narrow it down.

Show business is notoriously tough — and before actors make it big, they end up taking small parts to get by. It's inevitable, and if an aspiring actor doesn't book something super lucrative like, say, a national commercial (which can provide solid payouts every time they air), they probably turn to background work to make ends meet and get some exposure. All of this is to say that, if you're enjoying a slightly older movie or TV show, you might see a familiar face in a background scene from time to time. So, which of your favorite famous actors worked as an extra before they got their big break?
From an actor who eventually became a duchess to a handful of Oscar winners to the star of a breakout Netflix hit, here are just a few performers you can spot in the background or in small roles from their early days in the industry.

Inherent in any Christmas movie is an element of silliness; it’s just the way of things. More often than not, magic is involved, and highly improbable love stories result in moving halfway across the country and giving up massive paychecks. But this year, Netflix really leaned in on absurdity for their Christmas offerings, and in the end, it helped the stars and creators of the films find the heart of it all.
The streamer has five new original Christmas movies this year, and rolled out one new film every Wednesday beginning in early November. In one, a sexy snowman comes to life and struggles not to melt while also trying to woo the woman who unwittingly brought him to life. In another, a small-town bar needs saving, so the owners’ daughter creates a Christmas-themed all male revue, because what better way to rake in cash?

Netflix’s “Hot Frosty” has become a bit of a sensation since it debuted on the streamer in early November, topping the Netflix charts, going viral and even getting a Ryan Reynolds parody, thanks to its bonkers Christmas charm — and the charms of its leading actress, Lacey Chabert.
Best known for playing the iconic and “so fetch” Gretchen Wieners in “Mean Girls,” Chabert’s previous credits also include “Party of Five,” “Lost in Space,” voice roles in “The Wild Thornberrys” and “Young Justice,” and earning the title “Queen of Hallmark” for the 30+ Hallmark movies she’s made over the years.
What’s more, Chabert has become a holiday staple, so if you’re looking for more Lacey Chabert Christmas movies to watch after “Hot Frosty,” there are plenty to choose from. Some might say a daunting amount if you’re a Hallmark newbie — not to worry, we’ve gone through...

'Tis the season to be jolly, and Netflix really gave us a lot to be jolly about this year! Beginning with the first week of November, the streamer has released one new original Christmas romantic comedy per week, beginning with Meet Me Next Christmas at the beginning of the month and concluding with Our Little Secret, which was released ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday.
Each of the four movies boast big stars that we all know and love, including Christina Milian, Lacey Chabert, Chad Michael Murray, and Lindsay Lohan. But there are so many more amazing cast members in all of the movies that make them a lovable, magical experience that tops the top 10 most popular movies ranking on Netflix. Christmas movies on Netflix are already hot — not frosty.
The streamer’s latest Global Top 10 list included three Christmas movies: Chad Michael Murray and Britt Robertson film “The Merry Gentlemen” debuting at No. 1, “Hot Frosty” slipping to number 2, and “Meet Me Next Christmas” with Christina Millian charting seventh in its third week on the list.
Forget Christmas — it’s not even Thanksgiving.
“The Merry Gentlemen” had 14.7 million views in the week of November 18, according to Netflix, while “Hot Frosty” with Lacey Chabert and Dustin Milligan had 12.7 million (it had 16 million views in its debut). “Meet Me Next Christmas” had 5.9 million views last week.
On the TV side, the new Mike Schur show “A Man on the Inside” starring Ted Danson crammed a lump of coal down “Arcane’s” chimney. “A Man on the Inside” debuted at number 1 with 6.9 million views, denying “Arcane” Season 2 the top spot. (The second “Arcane” season...

Jimmy Fallon had some prime jokes following Matt Gaetz’s announcement he was withdrawing his name from consideration to be attorney general: “So far Trump hasn’t named a replacement, but Rudy Giuliani is outside throwing pebbles at his bedroom window,” Fallon said.
That bit was a bit out of date by the time the episode aired on Thursday evening. On Wednesday, Gaetz announced he would no longer seek to be attorney general, stating that his possible nomination “was unfairly becoming a distraction.” Since Gaetz’s name has been proposed, there have been days of debate about whether a congressional report on sexual misconduct allegations the politician should be released.
Instead, President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Pam Bondi, a veteran prosecutor, as his new attorney general pick. The decision was announced mere hours after Gaetz withdrew his name. “Pam was a prosecutor for nearly 20 years, where she was very tough on Violent Criminals,...

In addition to Hot Frosty starring Lacey Chabert and Dustin Milligan, another Christmas film involving bare-chested men and rock-hard abs has arrived on Netflix ahead of the holidays.

Jimmy Fallon is disappointed in us. The NBC host opened “The Tonight Show” by highlighting a recent Pew Research Center poll that found roughly one in five Americans say they regularly get their news from social media influencers.
“Somehow in 20 years we went from Tom Brokaw to Hawk Tuah,” Fallon said, referencing the retired news anchor and the woman who went viral for giving oral sex advice during a man-on-the-street interview.
Overall, Fallon’s Monday night monologue was heavy one one-liners. Nodding to the fact that one of his guests for the evening was Cher, the NBC host said, “‘If I Could Turn Back Time’ was all I could sing after wasting my time on the Tyson-Paul fight.”
That wasn’t the only Netflix joke Fallon had up his sleeve. After telling his audience about President Joe Biden’s trip to the Amazon rainforest — a first for any U.S.

On the heels of the response to “Joker: Folie à Deux” (Warner Bros.) on PVOD, “Megalopolis” (Lionsgate), Francis Ford Coppola’s much lower grossing but also much publicized $100 million self-financed film, got a home release that garnered almost zero interest.
“Saturday Night” (Sony) was the other big name release, and landed #6 on both iTunes (ranking by revenue) and Fandango (by transactions) top 10 lists (#4 and #6 respectively; it was #1 for a day at iTunes). It’s not like it was a much bigger hit than “Megalopolis” in theaters or PVOD. Its domestic gross was only $9.5 million, less than $2 million better than Coppola’s film.
“Megalopolis” not making either list is surprising. But what is stunning is it is nowhere to be found among the more than 80 movies listed on their daily list, nor has it since it was released. “Goodrich” (Bleecker Street) with Michael Keaton, which grossed barely over $1 million is #24 Monday.

Netflix’s Hot Frosty brings a sprinkle of holiday magic with its charming love story and snow-covered small-town vibes. This heartwarming rom-com stars Lacey Chabert as Kathy, a widow whose lonely Christmas takes an unexpected turn when her snowman comes to life—yes, a literal snowman (played by Dustin Milligan) transforms into her dream guy. While the fictional town of Hope Springs feels like the perfect holiday escape, the real filming locations behind the movie are just as enchanting. Let’s take a tour of magical locations where Hot Frosty was filmed!
A Winter Wonderland in Brockville, Ontario
The quaint charm of Hope Springs was brought to life in Brockville, a picturesque city in southeastern Ontario. Known for its scenic location along the St. Lawrence River, Brockville provided the perfect backdrop for many of the movie’s outdoor scenes.
Court House Avenue: This central street was transformed into Hope Springs’ festive hub.

People are interested in a strange new holiday movie on Netflix, showing that unusual stories can connect with viewers. In “Hot Frosty,” starring Lacey Chabert and Dustin Milligan, a snowman becomes a person, a surprising twist on the traditional holiday story.
Author Russell Hainline’s silly idea for the movie started out as a joke between friends. He told The Hollywood Reporter, “Sometimes you come up with pitches that make people laugh.” His first thought was simple: What if Frosty the Snowman turned into a real person instead of a snowman?
Hainline wrote the screenplay during the pandemic because she wanted to make a unique Christmas story. He tried to make a figure that was both funny and interesting. “I wanted my snowman to have the innocence of someone born yesterday, but with a slightly more adult edge,” he said.

Over the past couple of years, Netflix has been encroaching on the Hallmark Channel’s holiday season chokehold.
Writer Russell Hainline is no stranger to the Christmas movie, having penned several titles for Hallmark, including The Santa Summit and In Merry Measure. This week he debuted his first Netflix entry, the delightfully named, Hot Frosty.
The movie stars Hallmark company player Lacey Chabert as Kathy, a widow and beloved local who wraps a magical scarf around a sculpted snowman with an eight-pack who becomes a real — and very naked — man named Jack. Hijinks ensue with naive and preternaturally good-natured Jack (Dustin Milligan) being ogled by the local women and helping plan the high school’s winter formal, all the while being pursued by the cops for the initial display of public indecency. The film has earned an overwhelmingly positive critical response and is currently sitting at Netflix’s No. 1 most-streamed movie in the U.

For many years, the Hallmark Channel seemed to have a monopoly on the made-for-tv Christmas rom-com subgenre. But as streamers like Netflix continue to become the main source of entertainment for millions of people across the globe, they've been expanding their original offerings to include these silly, saccharine, and undeniably addictive movies that people can't seem to get enough of during the holiday season. Sure, there are some that simply hate-watch these types of stories about high-powered women who visit their humble hometowns for the holidays and decide to give it all up to fall back in love with their now-hunky high school sweethearts who own farms and exclusively wear festive flannels, but there are plenty of people who genuinely, unapologetically love these movies.

It’s November, and Netflix is already kicking off the holiday season with Christmas movies. Directed by Jerry Ciccoritti, Hot Frosty (2024) stars Lacey Chabert, Craig Robinson, and an eight-pack snowman brought to life by Dustin Milligan. Like most holiday films, it concludes on a cheerful note. However, it falls short of being a delightful treat for viewers. While it attempts to evoke the Christmas spirit with cozy scenes of cookies and twinkling lights, it misses the mark when it comes to fostering a genuine sense of community. Yes, the protagonist has a couple of close friends, but that’s a given in any small-town setup. Worse, the forced inclusion of a cancer subplot feels unnecessary and jarring.
The story centers on Kathy Barrett, a widow still mourning the loss of her husband to cancer. Caught up in her hectic routine, she discovers a snow-sculpture competition just before Christmas. Among the...

“It was about two weeks, or less, out from shooting, so really the only preparation I could do was to just to dive into the character,” Dustin told Decider about preparing for the role.
He continued, “It required being quite exposed, which is not always totally comfortable. But getting over that hurdle and just leaning into it—I actually feel like I learned something about myself as a result of that, which I wasn’t expecting, but certainly was very welcome.

The Netflix Christmas Universe is coming together, with five new offerings this year almost all having a connection to another Christmas film on the streamer. But “Hot Frosty” also has a very explicit reference to “Mean Girls” — and it’s made by none other than Gretchen Wieners herself.
Now streaming, “Hot Frosty” tells the story of a woman who unwittingly brings a very handsome snowman — the title really is self-explanatory here — to life with a magic scarf and falls in love with him, all while navigating the grief of losing her husband to cancer.
That woman is played by Lacey Chabert who, of course, starred in the 2004 film as Gretchen Wieners. And early on in the film, Kathy comes into her living room to find Jack (Dustin Milligan) watching Netflix’s “Falling for Christmas,” which just so happens to star Lindsay Lohan..
Looking at the screen, Kathy says “That is so funny.

Like in any movie, “Hot Frosty” plays a little creatively with where in the world it’s supposed to take place. But at least in this case, it’s pretty close.
Now streaming on Netflix, the holiday film centers on Kathy (Lacey Chabert), a café owner in Hope Springs who’s grieving the loss of her husband. When she places a scarf on a very chiseled snowman, that snowman comes to life and seeks her out.
As the two try and figure out what exactly happened and avoid having Jack (Dustin Milligan) melt into a puddle, they find themselves quickly falling in love.
At the end of the film, we learn that Hope Springs is actually meant to be in New York, as we see a shot of their license plate on the way to the airport for Hawaii. But was “Hot Frosty” actually filmed in New York?
Well, no.

A red knit scarf. That’s all Dustin Milligan’s sexy snowman ‘Jack’ is wearing when audiences first meet him in Netflix’s latest Christmas film “Hot Frosty.”
“I was obviously very exposed during all of that, but in a way, doing what I could to just shed all of my own inhibitions and be liberated as Jack would have been in that moment, Milligan tells Variety of stripping down. “It was liberating for me!”
In a fantastical plot that’s just off-the-rails enough to work, “Hot Frosty” follows Lacey Chabert’s Kathy, a widow and paragon of her local community, as she unwittingly brings a snow sculpture (with chiseled abs) to life with the help of that red scarf and a little Christmas magic.

“Hot Frosty” has come to life on Netflix, and yes, you’ve definitely swooned over him before. But, if you’re having trouble placing him, don’t worry, we got you.
Now streaming, the movie follows Kathy (Lacey Chabert) and Jack (Dustin Milligan) as they fall in love in a little town called Hope Springs. The thing is, Jack is a snowman. Yes, actually. He comes to life after Kathy unwittingly gives him a magic scarf, and he spends the rest of the movie wooing her while also trying desperately not to melt.
And he’s pretty good at that wooing. That’s because, as we mentioned above, he’s played by Dustin Milligan.
Odds are, you’ll most immediately recognize the actor as Ted Mullens, from “Schitt’s Creek.” He was a local veterinarian that Alexis Rose (Annie Murphy) quickly fell for in town. So obviously, he’s not exactly...

There’s a famous New York café called Serendipity 3 that serves a monstrously sugary dessert called a frozen hot chocolate. This similarly contradictory title hides an equally over-sweetened centre to Netflix’s latest piece of hunky Christmas junk. A snowman comes to life in a small town, warms the cockles of all who meet him and strikes up a non-steamy romance with a comely widow. This will only rise above your expectations if you keep them well below freezing.

Hot Frosty is the brand new holiday film on Netflix that is about the season of joy which cherishes family, friends, and everyone we love. Hot Frosty is about a stranger that walks into the lead female character’s life, and how she tries to accommodate the newcomer. The stranger suddenly becomes the talk of the town, and everyone very quickly becomes enamored by his presence. His presence also causes a stir while there are some trying to find out if the stranger has any ulterior motives.

Lacey Chabert portrays the role of Kathy, who runs her own cafe in the fictional town of Hope Springs. It is the middle of winter, and Christmas is only a few days away. The town is celebrating the snowman competition ahead of the holiday season, and Kathy is looking forward to it. Kathy is also a widow who had started the cafe with her now deceased husband.

Netflix’s next Christmas movie offering of 2024 has arrived, and it might make you melt. Or it might heat you up. Or … both?
“Hot Frosty” is now streaming, following the love story of Kathy and Jack. Their meet cute? Kathy unintentionally brings Jack to life with a magic scarf — because he’s a snowman. Yes, seriously. Lacey Chabert falls for a snowman with abs in streamer’s latest cheap, cheerful foray into Hallmark territory
Though I am personally of the belief that all Christmas movies should wait until after Thanksgiving – it just stopped being 80F (26C) in New York City last week, yikes – I cannot fault a movie for being exactly what it sets out to be. The trailer for Hot Frosty, Netflix’s newest foray into Hallmark’s holiday territory, promised to answer the question no one was asking: what if Frosty the Snowman had abs?
Curious minds do, in fact, want to know. Thankfully, the actual finished product, 90 minutes of extremely unserious, occasionally sweet fluff written by Russell Hainline, delivers logistical and spiritual answers to the quandary of Half-Naked Alive Snowman with complete dedication to the genre. Said snowman, Jack (Dustin Milligan), awakens with barely a strategically placed scarf to cover him. The town...

Christmas magic has officially arrived on Netflix this year care of Hot Frosty, the streamer's new original holiday romantic comedy starring Lacey Chabert and Dustin Milligan. Not only does the movie have magic in the form of heartwarming holiday cheer and romance, but there's an actual bit of fantasy as a snowman comes to life.
In the small town of Hope Springs, Kathy has been mourning the loss of her husband for two years and has been neglecting a lot of aspects of her life. When she gives a hunky snowman in the town's snowman display her scarf, he inexplicably takes human form. Suddenly, he's naked and galavanting around town before finding his way to Kathy's heart.
But how does Jack manage to keep cold without melting before the Christmas magic wears off? Do he and Kathy end up together? And what happens to Jack at the end of the movie?...

Forget Santa Claus... Hot Frosty is coming to town! The new Netflix original Christmas romantic comedy Hot Frosty made its premiere on Nov. 13, and it's sure to become an annual staple for many of us who love a festive feel-good movie around the holidays.
In Hot Frosty, Christmas movie queen Lacey Chabert plays Kathy, a widow living in Hope Springs, but she's still not feeling so hopeful two years after her husband's death. When a sexy snowman magically comes to life, she finds a renewed sense of joy. However, Kathy and Jack's (Dustin Milligan) connection might have thawed Kathy, but they must stop him from melting.
There's no doubt that Hot Frosty is a must-watch this holiday season for its heart, charm, and humor. But if you've seen the trailer, then you know the movie puts a bit of a spicy spin on your average Christmas rom-com. But just how spicy does Hot Frosty get?...

Shaking up holiday traditions in irreverently welcome ways, director Jerry Ciccoritti and writer Russell Hainline’s “Hot Frosty” redesigns the look and feel of the familiar snow-made showcase. Their story, centered on a wishful widow who magically transforms a snowman into a hunky rube, balances its sillier aspects with a touching sense of sincerity. They do away with the cartoonish character’s corncob pipe, coal eyes and rotund body, replacing these features with beefy biceps, chiseled bone structure and sculpted abs. The narrative delivers some refreshing highlights for the benefit of Netflix’s Holiday Cinematic Universe, specifically acknowledging its target audience’s yearning for a sprinkling of cheeky, wanton lust alongside its gentle yet genuine dramatics.
To set the tone, the camera pivots in its opening descent upon the picturesque town of Hope Springs, from a quaint two-story decked out in festive decor to an undecorated neighboring house where Kathy (Lacey Chabert) dwells.

It’s been over 20 years since cartoonist Peter Morley-Souter invented the only rule of the internet everyone actually agrees on: Rule No. 34, which says that if a thing exists, there is an X-rated version of it. It was true then and it’s true now. But I think the time has finally come to tack on an important addendum: Rule No. 34A: This also applies to Christmas movies.

A wonderfully unusual addition to Netflix’s holiday lineup is “Hot Frosty,” the streaming service’s newest holiday movie. The movie was directed by Jerry Ciccoritti and written by Russell Hainline. Lacey Chabert plays Kathy, a café owner in the cute town of Hope Springs who has lost her husband. Dustin Milligan plays Jack, a magically animated snowman who turns into a surprisingly complicated love lead.
The movie cleverly breaks the rules of typical holiday movies by starting with a plot that is both silly and touching. Jack comes to life when Kathy wraps a magical red scarf around a snow sculpture. Jack is a muscular, innocent figure who could be Kathy’s love interest and serves as a metaphor for grief and renewal.

Come November and the feel-good Christmas films release in a flood. Hot Frosty is just another silly feel-good film centered around Christmas. It lacks the spark to make it to the memorable-holiday-films list. Lacey Chabert as Kathy and Dustin Milligan as Jack lack chemistry, and the humor only works when Craig Robinson’s Sheriff Hunter enters the screen. Though I must mention, seeing Chabert remark that the girl on television reminded her of someone she knew in high school upon seeing her Mean Girls co-star, Lindsey Lohan, in her 2023 holiday film, Falling for Christmas, was hilarious.

We all know Frosty the Snowman — corncob pipe, button nose, two eyes made out of coal, etc. This year, the classic snowman of Christmas carol fame is getting a handsome makeover in the form of a new holiday romantic comedy starring Lacey Chabert. In the aptly titled Hot Frosty, Kathy (Chabert), a grieving widow, gets a new perspective on life after she meets Jack (Schitt’s Creek’s Dustin Milligan), a good-looking but oddly familiar stranger — who also strangely resembles a local ice sculpture.
“Kathy is dealing with overcoming grief and that she really needs to find the fun in life again,” Chabert tells Tudum. “Jack really brings that to life for her.”

When it comes to Christmas movies, "sexy" isn't typically the first, or probably even second, descriptor to come to mind. Maybe "charming" or "adventurous" or "festive" would be the words to describe your average holiday flick. Perhaps even "funny." But this year, Netflix is turning the heat all the way up with two of its new original Christmas romantic comedies.
Chad Michael Murray and Dustin Milligan are spreading holiday cheer in their movies The Merry Gentlemen and Hot Frosty. Simon Rex and Dustin Milligan have a lot in common. Not only are they the co-stars of the new indie comedy Operation Taco Gary’s, which just premiered at the Austin Film Festival, but they also came up in teen dramas in the 2000s before a recent resurgence.
Rex has had a second wind in his career since his critically acclaimed role in Sean Baker’s Red Rocket, while Milligan had a supporting role in the upcoming Netflix romantic comedy Hot Frosty.

But one thing is for sure — if the comedies they make are downright charming and riotous as Operation Taco Gary’s, we can’t wait to see more.
