Leading contenders for the Society of Composers & Lyricists’ 2025 Scl Awards include “Emilia Pérez” composers Clément Ducol and Camille, who picked up three nominations, for their score and for two original songs from the musical drama. Matching that number as an individual was Atticus Ross, whose three nominations are split between his scoring work on “Shōgun” and a song for “Challengers.”
The Scl’s nominations in eight film, television and interactive media categories were announced Wednesday morning, with the awards program scheduled to take place in Los Angeles on Feb. 12. Scroll down to see the full list of nominees.
The org’s annual Spirit of Collaboration Award will be given at the event to composer Harry Gregson-Williams and director Ridley Scott, in honor of an ongoing partnership that has resulted in “Gladiator II” being their seventh film together. Last year the same award went to Martin Scorsese and the late Robbie Robertson.

As music plays a crucial role in film and television, it is no surprise that many projects already in the conversation have received Golden Globe nominations for their scores and original songs. Nominations for Ariana Grande and Selena Gomez in acting marks a rare occurrence this year of musicians crossing over into acting.
Grande celebrates her first-ever Golden Globe nom for her supporting role as Glinda in Wicked: Part One while Gomez has been double-nominated for her acting in Only Murders in the Building and Emilia Pérez. Gomez will compete with Grande in the supporting actress category, which is a rare moment for music stars. In 2015, Lady Gaga and Queen Latifah both were nominated for Best Performance in a Miniseries or Television Film.

Earlier this year, the Monsterverse, Legendary’s interconnected series of monster-filled films that began with 2014’s “Godzilla,” celebrated its 10th anniversary. And now, our friends at Mondo are ready to celebrate, too – with two new vinyl figures; a poster that collects, for the first time, every monster from the series; and the vinyl debut of the soundtrack to “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,” Apple TV+’s hit series.
“I think that Mondo – like Legendary – are true fans at heart,” said Barnaby Legg, chief of creative marketing for Legendary Entertainment. “The attention to detail and sheer imagination that goes into their work is so clearly driven by an innate passion for these creatures, these characters, these worlds. For all the endless thought, care and hard work that has gone into building the Monsterverse, at heart, we are all doing it for the kaiju-loving kids we once were (and at times still are). There are nine legendary stars who only need a Grammy to achieve the Egot grand slam of show business awards: Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony (see the gallery at the bottom of this post). None of them were on the list of 2025 Grammy nominees, though, when they were announced on Friday morning, but there is a nominee this year who could get three quarters of the way there if he wins: composer Kris Bowers.
Bowers is nominated for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media for his work on the movie musical adaptation of “The Color Purple.” It’s the third nomination for the composer, who previously contended for Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella for “Blue Skies” in 2020 and then in the score soundtrack race in 2022 for the Netflix series “Bridgerton.” A victory this year for “Color Purple” would put him just a Tony away from achieving Egot status.

On Friday, Nov. 8, Oscar contender “Challengers” received a Grammy nomination for Best Score Soundtrack For Visual Media. This specific music category is awarded to the composers of an original score — in this case, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross — that is created specifically for film or television or other visual media. The Amazon MGM Studios production is also currently predicted to receive an Oscar bid for Best Score, and all of this attention could certainly boost its chances.
The other four nominees at the 2025 Grammys for Best Score Soundtrack For Visual Media are “American Fiction” by Laura Karpman, “The Color Purple” by Kris Bowers, “Dune: Part Two” by Hans Zimmer, and “Shōgun” by Nick Chuba, Atticus Ross, and Leopold Ross. Yes, that means Atticus Ross is competing against himself.
Because of the different eligibility periods for the Grammys and the Oscars, “American Fiction” and “The Color Purple” actually competed at last year’s Academy Awards.

What “Shōgun” accomplished Sunday at the Creative Arts Awards was unprecedented, grabbing 14 prizes (including 13 craft honors) and sweeping every category except the main title theme and original score by Atticus Ross, Leopold Ross, and Nick Chuba.
FX’s Japanese historical drama eclipsed the 13 wins by “Game of Thrones” and is all but certain to take Best Drama Series and more while setting a new Emmy record at the Primetime ceremony September 15.
“Shōgun” took casting, cinematography, period costumes, editing, period/fantasy production design, period/fantasy hairstyling, main title design, non-prosthetic period/fantasy/sci-fi makeup, prosthetic makeup, sound editing, sound mixing, special visual effects, and stunt performance.

In 2015, “Game of Thrones” set a record for winning the most Primetime Emmy Awards for a drama series in a single year, with 12. The HBO juggernaut was able to repeat that feat in 2016 and 2019, but was never able to win more than a dozen trophies in one season. This year, a brand new series from FX looks poised to break that record, as “Shōgun” leads all contenders with 25 nominations.
“Shōgun,” based on James Clavell’s bestselling novel, is set in Japan in the year 1600, at the dawn of a century-defining civil war. Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him, when a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village. The FX series created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks premiered on February 27, 2024 and the season finale aired April 23, 2024. It is currently available to stream on Hulu.

As part of Variety’s “Behind the Song,” “Shōgun” composer Leopold Ross broke down the show’s dramatic main title theme.
What started as a simple email from a friend he’d worked with together in the past, asking Ross if he wanted help work on the score for “Shōgun,” turned into a nearly two-year-long collaboration with composer Nick Chuba, brother and composer Atticus Ross and arranger/composer Taro Ishida.

As he navigates this foreign world, Blackthorne becomes entangled in the power struggles between feudal lords, particularly the ambitious daimyo, Lord Toranaga. Deadpool & Wolverine composer Rob Simonsen gave insight into his focus for the Marvel movie starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman that is hitting theaters this weekend.
Simonsen took part in a panel of film and television composers during San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday, where he praised director Shawn Levy and producer-star Reynolds for allowing him to concentrate on his primary agenda: having fun with the music. HBO has been a frequent producer with podcasts for its dramas like Watchmen, House of the Dragon, Succession, and more. Other networks have since gotten in on the action like Paramount Network with Yellowstone, Showtime with Dexter: New Blood, and Apple TV+ with For All Mankind.
The acclaimed American TV brand FX, however, never seemed too keen on official tie-in podcasting despite presenting many intriguing prospects over the years like The Bear and Fargo. That all changed this year when the Disney-owned company launched FX’s Shōgun: The Official Podcast to accompany the weekly release of its epic miniseries Shōgun.

We all know that Kurt Russell is a true acting legend. The legendary actor made a name for himself as Dexter Riley in films such as The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes (1969), Now You See Him, Now You Don’t (1972), and The Strongest Man in the World (1975), and later continued the success by starring in John Carpenter’s films as hero-turned-robber Snake Plissken in Escape from New York (1981), its sequel Escape from L.A. (1996), the horror film The Thing (1982), and the kung-fu comedy action film Big Trouble in Little China (1986). And while this is just a fraction of Russell’s amazing roles, it is a good indication of how big of a star he was in the 1970s and 1980s.
But, another member of his family, his son Wyatt Russell, is also becoming a popular acting name since his appearance as John Walker / U.S. Agent in the The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021) series.

While playing the same character at different ages as his real-life son Wyatt Russell in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, Kurt Russell admitted after watching Wyatt at work that he realized just how good of a performance his son was delivering, and he’d better bring his own A-game to match it.
Russell was joined on Deadline’s Contenders Television panel by VFX supervisor Sean Konrad and composer Leopold Ross to discuss the Apple TV+ and Legendary Television series – a prequel to the big-screen Monsterverse movies featuring Godzilla and King Kong. He said had the chance to take a good, long look at Wyatt’s acting chops while the two were shooting on parallel schedules.
“We were doing two different crews and I said, ‘I’m going to go check out and see Wyatt’s group was doing,’ ” Kurt recalled. “It was fascinating for me because for the first time, this...

Legendary Pictures’ MonsterVerse now has its own spinoff series on Apple TV+ with Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, and it’s aiming to capture the hearts of those kaiju fans invested in the production company’s shared cinematic universe. The MonsterVerse fandom has arguably split itself into two camps over the years, with one side more keen on the serious and dramatic Godzilla and Godzilla: King of the Monsters, while the other gravitates to its more ludicrous fare, Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla vs. Kong.
Monarch is definitely for the former camp, but even if you’re in neither, Apple and Legendary are hoping that you’re enthralled enough by the films’ central scientific organization that you’ll happily sit through an entire series about it as long as you occasionally get to see a titan or two in action. In that way, it reminds me of a little show called Agents of Shield,...

“I’m so excited about the show,” says Ronna Kress, the casting director of “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” on Apple TV+. “We worked so hard and did such a huge, worldwide search for almost five months.” She spoke with Gold Derby’s Latasha Ford backstage during the launch event at the DGA Theater in Hollywood this month. Watch the full video interview above.
Kress explains the unlikely casting of Ren Watabe as Kentaro, stating, “We needed an actor who we really wanted to follow through the series. Someone who was believable in the Japanese world, but also could speak English for the English-speaking world as well. He really came out of nowhere. In his audition, the first time that we saw him, our casting director in Tokyo introduced us to him. He said, ‘I’m really tired, I’m sorry.’ We said, ‘What were you working on last night?’ And he’s a line cook.

“Mainly, the struggle was really getting a good balance between the music and the sound effects, because there’s a lot of music in the show,” reveals Ben Cook, the multiple Emmy-winning sound designer for the Apple TV+ series “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,” the long-gestating show in the MonsterVerse franchise that premieres November 17 on the streamer. He speaks with Gold Derby’s Latasha Ford before a packed launch event at the DGA Theater in Hollywood earlier this month. He says, “You’re talking about sequences where you have these creatures fighting each other, so it’s very bombastic. The music’s bombastic, and people are yelling, which is bombastic. So there’s a lot of competing elements… It’s a lot of sound, and we had a lot of fun doing it for sure.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Leopold Ross is the kind of guy who gets excited to be in the presence of legendary monsters. So you can imagine his joy at being asked to compose the music for the Apple TV+ series “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,” the highly anticipated show in the MonsterVerse franchise that premieres November 17 on the streamer. Except that the truth is, Ross went all-in on the show before he even knew what it was about. As he told Gold Derby’s Latasha Ford during a jam-packed launch event at the DGA Theater in Hollywood this month, he agreed to be the show’s composer based solely on the fact Chris Black had signed on as its showrunner/executive producer. They had worked together once before, on the 2016-2018 Cinemax horror drama “Outcast.” ‘When I got the call to do the show, I just said yes immediately because I love Chris and I...

“We’ve been working on this project for a long time,” reveals Chris Black, the showrunner/executive producer of “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” on Apple TV+. This highly anticipated television series in the MonsterVerse franchise has been “a lot of effort,” he tells us, with “a lot of people pouring their talent and passion into something, and now we’re getting it out here for people to see, so we’re really excited.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Other than his past collaboration with composer Leopold Ross, most of the behind-the-scenes talents on “Monarch” are new to Black’s world. “Part of the fun of a project like this is being introduced to new talented people that you haven’t worked with before,” he begins, “and having our team at the studio, at Legendary, at Apple bringing people into my circle.”
Black adds, “We just had an amazing team.

Monday night at the DGA Theatre in Hollywood, Apple TV+ unveiled its long-gestating MonsterVerse project, “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,” to a packed crowd of excited guild voters. Following a screening of the first episode, which will debut on the streaming service on November 17, Gold Derby’s Chris Beachum moderated a panel with showrunner/executive producer Chris Black, casting director Ronna Kress, visual effects supervisor Sean Konrad, sound designer Ben Cook and composer Leopold Ross.

“The Girl from Plainville” is based on the true story of Massachusetts teenager Michelle Carter and her involvement in convincing her boyfriend Conrad Roy to take his own life. Carter also happened to harbor an obsession with the Fox dramedy “Glee,” which is incorporated not only into the Hulu limited series but also influenced composer Leopold Ross‘s score, which he co-wrote with Nick Chuba. “It was basically the jumping-off point for us in terms of the spark of inspiration because it was such a unique aspect to the story,” says Ross in an exclusive new interview for Gold Derby. “It was also interesting being people who make music which is very not ‘Glee’ to kind of see what we could do.” Watch the full video chat above.

The Peacock limited series Dr. Death stars Christian Slater as Randy Kirby, one of the doctors who exposed Dr. Christopher Duntsch (Joshua Jackson)’s malpractice. Series creator Patrick McManus said the real Dr. Kirby was very sure of the story’s merits for television.

Best original song Oscar contenders Beyoncé and Van Morrison are among those who received nominations in the visual media categories at the Hollywood Music in Media Awards (Hmma). Composers Hans Zimmer and Nicholas Britell were included among the familiar names picking up nods in the score categories.

Nominations here have historically been a harbinger or guide for what nominees and winners will pop up in the Golden Globes, Oscars, Grammys and Emmys that occur later in awards season, although there is a much wider field in the HMMAs, since there are separate divisions for sci-fi, animation, documentary and independent films in the score categories. Where do you even begin with a year brimming with as much exciting music as 2020 had to offer? Even if you limit it to what made it to TV screens, it’s still a daunting collection of possibilities.
To start, there were the undeniable musical charms of “Central Park,” “The Eddy,” and “P-Valley,” all of which drew heavily on original songs to help tether their stories to a distinct time and place.
Phillip Glass, Harold Budd (“I Know This Much is True”), Alan Silvestri (“Cosmos: Possible Worlds”) and Atticus Ross all added to their robust, ever-growing bodies of work.
Musicians who have helped define the atmospheres of their respective series — like Ramin Djawadi for “Westworld” or Jesse Novak for “BoJack Horseman” — continued to do so as the characters in focus faced monumental changes. In the middle of it all, Jeff Russo held onto his title of the busiest musician in...

There’s a notable difference between the types of projects that Amazon and Netflix have been putting out, theatrically speaking. On the one hand, Amazon has been gunning for awards and embracing a theatrical release with things like the Oscar winner Manchester by the Sea. There’s also their burgeoning relationship with an auteur like Woody Allen. It’s a whole concerted effort under their Amazon Studios wing. On the other hand, Netflix has gone for casting a wider net, while only occasionally putting their higher profile films out in theaters, like Beasts of No Nation or this year’s Okja. They only once in a while look at things with an awards type view. So far, they’ve either come up short with would be players like War Machine, or seen things like Beasts of No Nation snubbed. This week, Death Note hits as the latest major Netflix release.

With the electronic pulse familiar from "The Social Network," "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," and "Gone Girl" (all composed with Trent Reznor) heightened nearly to the breaking point, the new Ep has us even more excited for "Triple 9" (Open Road, February 26). The hands-on Hillcoat "had a particular vision for the music on this movie, which was raw sounding electronics accompanied by, bizarrely, a saxophone," according to Ross. "John wanted to avoid ‘sophistication’ and capture the excitement of hands-on performances with noisy, broken machines.” The collaborators succeeded: the first track, the cleverly titled "Ticking Glock," is intense enough to rouse you from even the deepest mid-afternoon malaise. The Ep, co-created with Bobby Krlic, Leopold Ross, and Claudia Sarne, also features Ross' remix of Cypress Hill's 1991 'Pigs.' All of Ross' profits from the song will be donated to the National...

From The Good The Bad And The Ugly.Ca, Sneak Peek 'the good, the bad and the ugly' in director Michael Mann's new thriller "Blackhat", starring Chris Hemsworth, Wei Tang and Viola Davis:

"Mann delights in exploring CG 'digital trails', plunging into physical networks, following power surges while mapping out a glowing high-tech world, in contrast to the grimy digs used by a sweaty, terrorist hacker.
"Thor" actor Hemsworth, looking every inch an action star, knows how to use a gun (as opposed to a hammer) and effortlessly takes out gaggles of baddies, using 'MacGyver'-like prison smarts to street-fight his way out of confrontations.

One of the unexpected controversies this week was that Harry Gregson-Williams, one of the credited composers on "Blackhat," took the Michael Mann-directed cyber-thriller to task.
The composer had worked on the score of the film for several months, and was aware Mann had hired others before and after his work. Yet in a Facebook posting earlier this week, one which has since been deleted, he reportedly expressed shock and displeasure that the final film "contains almost none of my compositions... I was not the author of most of what is now in the movie."
Variety got in touch with Mann about the posting and here's his response: "Harry's a talented composer whose music needed editing and remixing to fit the very contemporary subject and ambitions of my picture. He was one of (several) composers who contributed to the score - along with Atticus and Leo Ross, Ryan Amon and Mike Dean.

Controversy struck Michael Mann’s new cyberhacker actioner from within this week when composer Harry Gregson-Williams accused the director of “slicing and dicing” his work on the film. So who wants credit for Blackhat’s hacked-up score?
“I would like it to be known for what it’s worth that the ‘score’ for Blackhat maybe credited to me, but contains almost none of my compositions,” Gregson-Williams declared Monday on Facebook, four days after the Chris Hemsworth starrer premiered in Los Angeles. It was only during Thursday’s premiere, Gregson-Williams wrote, that he “discovered, to my horror, music that shocked and surprised me…quasi emotional (synth) string pieces that I’d never heard in my life before.

Anyone can tell you who's already made it, but HuffPost Arts & Culture's On Our Radar series is here to tell you who's about to blow up -- and, in some cases, go pop.
Io Echo recently released their first album "Ministry of Love" today, but the band has already been linked to art superstars. After seeing the duo Ioanna Gika and Leopold Ross perform live, Moca director Jeffery Deitch asked Io Echo to curate an audio-visual festival last July called Play Moca.
The pair also teamed up with director Harmony Korine to write the music for a video installation at this year's Venice Biennial starring -- you guessed it -- James Franco.
Blending synthetic and organic sounds from East Asia, including Japanese koto harps and Chinese violins, Io Echo's music transports us to faraway dreamland. We asked Ioanna and Leopold about their unique sound and what's next for the daring musical duo.

While we didn't think much of the actual movie, one reason soundtrack and score fans might want to check out "Broken City" is that it boasts brand new music from Atticus Ross, alongside past collaborators Claudia Sarne and Leopold Ross. The Oscar winner behind "The Social Network" score, which he co-wrote with Trent Reznor, has been steadily getting more cinema work, contributing to the team of talented musicians on the Mexican drama "Days Of Grace," and reteaming with Reznor on "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo." But this time around, he's giving folks a bit of a peek into his creative process. The composer/musician has curated a music playlist exclusively for Rdio that delves into this inspirations, and it's pretty solid stuff. Mostly looking back to the past, the mixtape of sorts is bookended by David Bowie, features cuts from Tangerine Dream and Giorgio Moroder and their work for...

A U.K. publication claims to have spoken with Liberty Ross' brother about the alleged affair between Rupert Sanders and Kristen Stewart, but sources close to Ross deny that anyone from her family has disclosed any information to the public.
The People recently published a story saying that Leopold Ross, Liberty's 28-year-old musician brother who is living in Los Angeles, revealed details about Stewart and Sanders' relationship, claiming it lasted "from the last half of filming and all through post-production, clear into last week.”
The story was in stark contrast to People magazine's original report about the affair, in which sources claimed the "Twilight" actress and the married director only engaged in a "fleeting moment that never should have happened."
Although The People is standing by its story, a source close to Ross and her family told People magazine that all quotes in the article are false.

Look at the way Kristen Stewart kind of lifts her hand! Look at the way Rupert Sanders takes a step toward her! Clearly there must have been something tawdy going on between these two at Snow White and the Huntsman premiere May 14, what with all the raw sexual energy coursing through this red carpet gif posted by Gawker. Or not. Yeah, almost certainly not.
Seriously, if this gif was somehow evidence of their illicit affair, what could Rupert even be saying that would suggest that?
“I’m going to announce our secret love to Meryl Streep unless you tell me not to.” “Hey, is that Rob over there? Let’s go tell him we made out in a car!” “Let’s hook-up right here on the red carpet! It’ll be like when we canoodled in the park. No one can see us in my two-person invisibility cloak!”
No. Stop.

Don't believe everything you read. Following a new report in British newspaper The People (which is owned by the Mirror and not related to People magazine) that director Rupert Sanders's affair with Kristen Stewart was more than a one-time fling, a source very close to his wife Liberty Ross and her family tells People all quotes from that story are false. "Contrary to inaccurate reports, neither Liberty Ross nor any member of her family has spoken to the media," the source tells People. "Quotes that are being attributed to the Ross family have been completely fabricated." The People report...
