As we are full-on in the Lent season, our definitive list will focus on films about religion or some aspect of it. The #1 qualification to be on this list is to deliberately focus on religion, a religious figure, or have the presence of a religion/faith as an integral plot point. For example, most of Luis Bunuel’s films can be viewed as attacks on the church, but they aren’t literally about Christianity; therefore, they won’t be included. So, on this list, we’ll look at as many different faiths as possible (though, there are obviously a lot more movies about Christianity than any other religion). We’ll even dabble into cults and sects that don’t really exist. Final rule: no documentaries. We’re keeping this fictional.

Sometimes, maybe most of the time, ambiguous endings are cop-outs. The crime isn’t in subverting audience expectations—who wants movies without surprises?—but in betraying the stories themselves. Most stories deserve definitive endings, and audiences are rightfully frustrated when they don’t get them. But sometimes the situation is reversed and an ambiguous ending is the only way not to betray the story.
“Sound of My Voice” follows Peter, a budding filmmaker who infiltrates (for lack of a less freighted term) a cult, which is built around a woman claiming to have traveled back in time from the future. Peter drags his girlfriend along as he tries to bring down the cult and its leader, Maggie, with a biting documentary, but the more enmeshed he gets with Maggie the more his skepticism wavers. By the end of the film Peter’s feelings about Maggie reach a sort of equilibrium:...

Chicago – In between the pulse-pounding jitters of “Martha Marcy May Marlene” and the mesmerizing opaqueness of “The Master,” Fox Searchlight released a decidedly less-showy exploration of cult dynamics. Zal Batmanglij’s “Sound of My Voice” doesn’t quite have the dizzying depth of the other two films, but what it lacks in complexity, it makes up for in tantalizing dialogue, expert pacing and deliciously involving suspense.
This is one of the most effective edge-of-your-seat thrillers in recent memory as well as an inventive portrait of shifting perspectives. The film is divided into numbered chapters, each one subverting the expectations built from the preceding segment. In the opening chapter (released for free online), lovers Peter (Christopher Denham) and Lorna (Nicole Vicius) attend a meeting hosted by Maggie (Brit Marling of “Another Earth”), a woman who claims to be from the future. It soon becomes apparent that this group huddled on the...

Prometheus (20th Century Fox) Ridley Scott’s quasi-prequel to his 1979 classic “Alien” has an intergalactic exploratory team (Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba) arriving on a uncharted planet, where they discover what appears to be a dormant alien spacecraft and what might be the first discovery of intelligent life outside of Earth. Of course, everything goes straight to hell before you can scream “Don’t touch that egg!” Sumptuous visuals and strong performances from the cast (not to mention a nearly-perfect first half) can’t compensate for gaping plot and logic holes that nearly sink the proceedings in the film’s protracted second half. It feels as though some very crucial footage wound up on the cutting room floor. Perhaps, as with “Alien” and “Aliens” we’ll see a “Director’s Cut” of “Prometheus” arriving on DVD within the next year. In the meantime,...

New Releases Best of the Week Sound of My Voice - 20th Century Fox - Blu-ray, DVD Release Date: Apr 27, 2012 Director: Zal Batmanglij Cast: Christopher Denham, Nicole Vicius, Brit Marling,Davenia McFadden, Kandice Stroh. Full cast + crew Odd, horror-movie-looking cover art aside, Sound of My Voice is one of this year's hidden genre gems. It's a sci-fi movie in the most intellectual sense, which isn't to say that it's pretentious or boring, just that it trades elaborate effects and set pieces for ideas and dialogue. This is a seemingly simple movie about a couple that decides to infiltrate a cult with the plan of outing their leader as a fake, but the more time they spend with her, the more they buy into her story of...

A big fan of ambiguity and toying with her audience, Sound Of My Voice gives Brit Marling another chance to double up as scriptwriter and actress, excelling in both and providing a stellar bedfellow for 2011’s Another Earth.
Not as strong as her tale of a duplicate Earth, but equally as fascinating, Zal Batmanglij’s film tracks young couple Peter (Christopher Denham) and Lorna (Nicole Vicius) as they work to infiltrate a local cult who have become obsessed with a strange young woman called Maggie (Marling), whose claims about her identity and the state of the world are cause for an equal amount of doubt and faith.
Choosing hidden cameras as their means of recording a documentary exposé, Batmanglij’s film works subtly in harmony with this, presenting itself in ten chapters and using narration to save any expositional dialogue. This narration also serves to provide us with all we...

Argh! Actor and screenwriter Brit Marling has done it again! She’s come up with an intriguing science-fictional concept as the basis for an indie arthouse drama -- and she doesn’t know what to do with it. I cannot tell you how exasperating this is, to be a lover of stories who longs for something fresh, who particularly appreciates the opportunities that science fiction provides for telling new tales... and to see it all fall so maddeningly short of satisfying. It’s best to know as little as possible going in -- and I do think Sound of My Voice is, despite its failings, worth seeing -- so I will be circumspect (moreso than some other critics have been). There is an enigmatic figure living in the basement of an anonymous, ordinary, yet unknown suburban house in Southern California, and drawing about her a small, select following of what can only be called worshippers.

Ted (15)
(Seth MacFarlane, 2012, Us) Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis, Seth MacFarlane, Joe McHale, Giovanni Ribisi. 106 mins
Those unconvinced by MacFarlane's Family Guy cartoon series will be even less convinced by his first feature – basically a routine manchild/bromance story with one novel idea: Wahlberg has a magic talking teddy, which has grown up into an obnoxious party animal – thus creating relationship issues with shrewish girlfriend Kunis. It's all gags and no comedy. And if you're anything other than white, male and pop culture-literate, you'll find the humour at best patchy, at worst, downright nasty.
Sound Of My Voice (15)
(Zal Batmanglij, 2011, Us) Christopher Denham, Nicole Vicius, Brit Marling. 85 mins
As with Another Earth, co-writer Marling takes an unorthodox line through a familiar genre here. This time she's a spacey/scary cult leader who claims to be from the year 2054. A couple of investigative journalists get out of their depth taking her on.

Brit Marling's latest film comes up with another interesting idea – in this case, two film-makers infiltrating a cult – that fizzles out infuriatingly
Newcomer Brit Marling was big news at last year's Sundance film festival with two indies, co-writing and starring in both. One was an intriguing, if somewhat anaemic sci-fi concept called Another Earth, about the discovery of a duplicate planet Earth up there in the heavens. It was a film that exasperatingly failed to deliver on its promise, featuring a somewhat self-conscious performance from Marling. More or less the same can be said of Sound of My Voice. This too has a very interesting idea to start off with. Two documentary film-makers, Lorna (Nicole Vicius) and Peter (Christopher Denham), infiltrate a cult led by Maggie (Marling), a fey blonde who claims to come from the future. She's a scam artist … or is she? Some nice twists promise us an old-fashioned,...

★★★☆☆ Following on from the success of Another Earth (2011), Brit Marling stars in Zal Batmanglij's Sound of My Voice (2011). Once again credited as writer and producer, Marling continues to enhance her burgeoning reputation as one of America's most promising stars. Ordinary couple, Peter (Christopher Denham) and Lorna (Nicole Vicius) turn into investigative journalists in an attempt to create an expose documentary about a neighbouring cult that has began to grow a fervent following.

A beautiful woman who claims to be from the future is at the center of Sound Of My Voice, thought-provoking drama that well-captures the strangeness of cults. Peter (Christopher Denham) and Lorna (Nicole Vicius) are aspiring documentarians who live in Los Angeles. He substitute teaches at a Catholic school to pay the bills while she.s an ex-party girl who.s trying to shed her spoiled upbringing. They both want to do something meaningful and they.ve somehow learned about a burgeoning cult in the San Fernando Valley revolving around Maggie (Brit Marling), an enigmatic young woman who claims to be from the year 2054 (evidenced by the number 54 tattooed on her ankle) and has traveled back in time to help the group learn to prepare for the changes that are coming. In the fall of 1996, I went to a basketball tournament that my brother was in and sat in the stands with my parents bored as ever. I was eleven and was at an age where I was curious about everything and anyone that I didn’t already know. Sometimes I wonder if I ever grew out of that state of mind. At one point during the game I looked down and noticed a small piece of paper on the wooden bleachers near where we were sitting. On it was an advertisement for something that I never had heard of before. The first thing I noticed when I gazed upon it was an image of what my Catholic upbringing taught me was the gates of heaven; it was two large iron gates surrounded by clouds. Several words and phrases adorned the advertisement including “apocalypse” and “salvation.” Most important was the name...

Chicago – Fresh off her Spirit Award nominated film “Another Earth,” the up-and-coming filmmaker Brit Marling again writes and stars in “Sound of My Voice,” portraying another mysterious and mood-inducing character. The future of humanity is the basis for this simple but vivid narrative.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
This is not as good as “Another Earth,” but that’s not to say it isn’t worth experiencing. It has the feel of a chilling “Twilight Zone” episode, establishing a certain aura about Marling’s character, then unraveling her environment by exposing elements that may or may not pertain to the overall thesis. This film is more about emotion, trust and whether Maggie’s story is to be believed, and leaves those themes hanging in the air at the conclusion, to ponder within our own inherent morality.
Brit Marling is a woman named Maggie, and she is holed up in a nondescript suburban tract home.

In the opening minutes of Zal Batmanglij’s Sound of My Voice, a couple warily pulls into a nondescript suburban garage and awaits further guidance. They are instructed to bathe (“cleanse”) themselves, change into white hospital gowns, and surrender to blindfolds, zip-tied wrists and a claustrophobic van ride to another home nestled in the San Fernando Valley.
The process, one they somehow grow accustomed to, is part of an initiation into the inner circle of their underground cult (literally, since they congregate in a basement). They have been vetted, chosen, and deemed worthy enough to witness Maggie (Brit Marling), an attractive, blond twentysomething who claims to be from the year 2054. She emerges, with an oxygen tank in tow, and tells a harrowing tale of awakening as a stranger in her own body, lost and alone.
Naturally, Maggie’s initial desperation and subsequent discovery resonates with her followers, a group of rejected misfits searching for meaning.

This weekend the science-fiction meditation on faith, time travel and the human desire to subjugate oneself to something “greater,” Zal Batmanglij's “Sound of My Voice,” opens in theaters. And the film is in part the result of actress Brit Marling’s (“Another Earth”) desire to create interesting roles for herself. Marling found that the types of characters she wanted to play simply were not available to her, and so she and Batmanglij, a college friend and long-time creative collaborator, chose to invent one. The film follows a Los Angeles couple, Peter (Christopher Denham) and Lorna (Nicole Vicius) as they attempt to uncover...

Last year the subject of cults was brought up in Sean Durkin's Martha Marcy May Marlene, this year director and co-writer Zal Batmanglij brings us Sound of My Voice an eerie exploration of "what do you believe?" as a Los Angeles couple attempt to infiltrate a cult to expose its leader as a fraud. The film ultimately begins asking questions about how far would you be willing to go and then takes it a little further beyond that. Trust plays a big part and even if it gets a little sloppy and convenient at times, I found it still to be quite interesting in the end.

It’s likely that your first introduction to Brit Marling came from our weekly Watch It feature. Her film "Sound of My Voice" had three of our writers buzzing about the talented rising actress, writer and producer.
In the movie, Marling plays Maggie, a present-day cult leader claiming to have time traveled from the future. Peter (Christopher Denham) and Lorna (Nicole Vicius), a documentary filmmaking couple, infiltrate her group intent on exposing the mysterious leader and freeing her followers—who believe they were chosen to escape a future disaster as long as they obey Maggie's commands.
Marling co-wrote "Sound" with director Zal Batmanglij, a friend she's been working with since college when she was an Econ-major-turned-filmmaker. The film hits select theaters today and we caught up with Marling to talk about the challenges she faced playing Maggie, her interest in time travel and "The East," her next film with Batmanglij...

From the outside, the idea of joining a cult, of giving yourself to a random stranger who claims to have an answer or a connection that will lead you to a fuller, happier life or offer some kind of salvation from this world seems absurd. And certainly, to Peter, a school teacher and amateur investigative journalist in Zal Batmanglij's "Sound of My Voice," he sees it at first as a topic worthy of a documentary/exposé. Together with his girlfriend Lorna, they infiltrate a group led by Maggie, an enigmatic and utterly compelling young woman who boldly claims to be from the future, and promises her followers to keep them safe from something unsaid that's coming down the line.

A sterile basement, untouched by tainted hands. A small coalition of the willing, clean, bright-eyed and brimming with a mixture of fear and optimism. A beautiful woman with a secret, clad in white, attached to a breathing apparatus, telling an outlandish story. Like the listeners, you hang on to every word, you cling to every hidden meaning. This is the world of “Sound of My Voice.”
Zal Batmanglij’s directorial debut creates the milieu of limited visual possibilities that nonetheless brims with ideas. Our secretive woman, a young blonde who claims to be from the future, sounds outlandish until you consider this is Los Angeles, where dreamers outnumber the realists.
But there’s something different about this girl. An otherworldly confidence, perhaps. A notable skill at storytelling, maybe. Or is it that she actually does hail from a post-apocalyptic tomorrow, decades in the future where food is scarce and humanity struggles to rebuild?...

Brit Marling is not necessarily a name you know, but it's a name to keep an eye on all the same. The actress and co-writer of "Another Earth" is back this weekend with another flick that grounds science fiction with reality: "The Sound of My Voice," about a woman who might be from the future, or might just be a sadistic cult leader, depending on your interpretation. It's a fascinating film that left three of our writers wanting more.

Title: Sound of My Voice Director: Zal Batmanglij Starring: Brit Marling, Christopher Denham, Nicole Vicius, Davenia McFadden, James Urbaniak, Avery Pohl A gripping, low-fi, arthouse mystery/thriller that steadily swells the pulse of viewers, like an incrementally inclined treadmill, “Sound of My Voice” is a joint exercise in disquiet and intellectual provocation, and far and away one of the best cinematic offerings of the year so far. Slim (at only 84 minutes) but still never less than spellbinding, the low-budget feature serves as a lesson in the power of storycraft, and further confirms the talents of burgeoning multi-hyphenate Brit Marling. Skipping past any of their recruitment or plotting, the Los Angeles-set “Sound of [ Read More ]...

Following last year's head-turning debut as the star and co-writer (with Mike Cahill) of the science fiction tale Another Earth , Brit Marling is back in theaters this Friday with Sound of My Voice , a dramatic thriller with its own fair share of sci-fi elements. Again co-writing (this time with director Zal Batmanglij), Marling stars as Maggie, a mysterious but undeniably charismatic leader of what, on the surface, appears to be a new wave cult. When a documentary filmmaker, Peter (Christopher Denham), and his girlfriend, Lorna (Nicole Vicius) try to infiltrate the group, they quickly find themselves in over their heads and are forced to confront the fact that Maggie may be deceiving her followers towards a dangerous end or, even more terrifying, that she might be telling the...

Sound Of My Voice was one of the two films with Brit Marling premiering last year at Sundance, and both were received with great critical praise. With its Us release just around the corner this weekend, we now have a great new set of images from the film to share with you.
Last month brought with it a great new trailer and poster for the film, followed by the first clip a few weeks ago, and we have IMDb to thank for these ten new images, focusing on the principal cast of Christopher Denham, Nicole Vicius, and Brit Marling.

Besides the buzz around "Bully," the art house scene has been pretty quiet since the long string of Oscar players died out at the beginning of March. That will all change next Friday when Zal Batmanglij's "Sound of My Voice" finally hits theaters. One of the more lauded films to debut at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, "Voice" is a seductive and thought provoking look into how a cult figure could gain prominence in 21st Century America. The dramatic thriller stars Christopher Denham and Nicole Vicius as a Los Angeles couple who decide to investigate a small cult for a documentary...

Sound of My Voice is a new thriller with sci-fi undertones that stars the film’s writer, Brit Marling, as a woman claiming to be from the future.
It’s a bit slow, a bit forced at times, but subtly clever at moments. Ultimately, it just doesn’t have much meat to it.
I like to refer to movies like this as “white people movies.” These are movies in which all the main characters wear skinny ties, shop at Whole Foods, live in nice apartments and have white collar jobs. These people are usually quirky, wear vintage jackets, think too much and seem like they listen to soft alternative music you’ve never heard of before. They live in hipster neighborhoods and struggle with the true meaning of relationships, love and dinner parties.

The Fringe is a place where non-horror genre films can get some play on Shock. These films might be sci-fi, fantasy or action - and certainly contain some horror elements - but will likely be light on scares, or, straight-up "horror." Still, they might be of interest to you.
Last month, after seeing a screening of the film, we alerted you to a clever and cool flick called Sound of My Voice, opening April 27th. At the time, distributor Fox Searchlight released the first 12 minutes of the film.

I must say I am excited to finally see a trailer for Sound of My Voice. It was easily one of my favorites I saw at SXSW 2011. The film was acquired for distribution during the festival, so I was asked to hold a review, but I can't wait to see it again. It's an intriguing movie about a cult centered around a mysterious woman (Brit Marling, Another Earth) who claims she has come from the future to enlighten her disciples. Here's the official synopsis: In Sound of My Voice, Peter (Christopher Denham) and Lorna (Nicole Vicius), a couple and documentary film making team, infiltrate a mysterious group led by an enigmatic young woman named Maggie (Brit Marling). Last year at Sundance, there were two* brilliantly-received young Us actresses coming out of the festival that instantly became ones-to-watch: Elizabeth Olsen and Brit Marling.
Olsen went to the festival with Martha Marcy May Marlene (which was released here in the UK earlier this year) and the upcoming real-time horror film, Silent House (due out on 4th May).
Marling went to the festival with two films, herself, and not only did she star in both of them, she also co-wrote the two as well: Another Earth (which was released here late last year), and the upcoming Sound Of My Voice, co-written and directed by Zal Batmanglij, who makes his feature debut.
We now have a new trailer and brilliant poster to share with you for Marling’s upcoming film, Sound Of My Voice, courtesy of Apple – making those first few paragraphs quite possibly the longest preamble to this main point.

Here's the first trailer to a new film called The Sound of My Voice, which follows a young couple who infiltrate a mysterious crazy cult to debunk the claim that its leader is from the year 2054 and prove that the cult is full of crap. Of course, the longer they are in the cult, the more the start to question what it is they are doing.
The film has a strange vibe to it, but it looks like an interesting story. The film was written by and stars Brit Marling (Another Earth). She said she did a lot of research on several of the underground cults in the Los Angeles area--apparently they're everywhere! The movie was co-written and directed by Zal Batmanglij.

This year Sundance Film Festival came out with the terrifyingly cold drama The Sound of My Voice. Fox Searchlight Pictures picked up the film that follows two investigative journalists who infiltrate a suburban cult led by enigmatic young woman named Maggie (Brit Marling). The two will attempt to expose Maggie as a fraud, but as they go deeper into the rabbit hole, they begin to uncover something they never say coming.

Another Earth might have beaten it into cinemas, but Sound Of My Voice, the second Brit Marling-starring project from last year’s Sundance Film Festival is now on its way. The central figure is a mysterious young woman named Maggie (Marling), who claims to be from the year 2054 and is also critically ill.As Peter and Lorna dig deeper, Maggie sticks to her notion that she has come back to 2011 in order to save a select group from a coming collapse of society. We don’t want to say too much more for fear of giving anything away, but after the festival,...

Brit Marling is from the future. This means that she knows certain things. For instance, she knows who will win the upcoming presidential election. She's already seen not just "The Hunger Games," but "Catching Fire" and "Mockingjay" as well. She can play the stock market like nobody's business. And there's one other thing she knows:
She knows that you're going to plotz when you see the trailer for her new psychological thriller, "Sound of My Voice."
If you're not yet familiar with Marling, don't worry, that's something else the future has in store for pretty much all movie fans. And sooner rather than later, because with "Sound of My Voice," the star of last year's indie sci-fi sensation "Another Earth" plays a creepy cult leader who claims to be from the year 2054. Will journalists Christopher Denham and Nicole Vicius expose her dangerous lies? Or could she actually be from the future?...
