The lineup for the 28th edition of the American Black Film Festival continues to get more star studded with the world premiere of the second season of Kerry Washington’s Hulu series “UnPrisoned.”

The signing follows the world premiere of Wariebi’s short We Were Meant To at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, where it received a standing ovation and was nominated for the Short Film Grand Jury Prize. That’s one of several summer premiere dates BET+ is set to announce on Wednesday, Variety has learned exclusively. According to BET+, the 90-minute reunion brings back original stars Martin Lawrence, Tisha Campbell, Tichina Arnold and Carl Anthony Payne II to reminisce about the show’s five seasons.

The show even takes place on the iconic “Martin” living room set and is hosted by Affion Crockett. “The cast will look back on the show’s most hilarious moments, revisit the iconic characters Martin made famous and pay an emotional tribute to the late, great Tommy Ford,” the streamer said. “Complete with musical performances and drop-ins by celebrity super fans, ‘Martin: The Reunion’ brings back the wazzup wazzup wazzup passion fans have been waiting for.

With the deal, Hart combines Hartbeat Productions and Laugh Out Loud into a single Hartbeat banner led by CEO Thai Randolph, who helped raise the capital and had been chief operating officer of both companies. Nine-time Grammy Award winner and recent Super Bowl halftime show headliner Mary J. Blige will perform at the live show. The ceremony will also feature Samuel L. Jackson, who will be honored with the NAACP Chairman’s Award, and New York Times editor and journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones, who will be presented with the Social Justice Impact Award. During the ceremony, members of the Mexican American Legislative Caucus, Texas House Democratic Caucus, and Texas Legislative Black Caucus will receive the Roy Wilkins Civil Rights Award, for their work protecting the freedom to vote in Texas.

Exclusive: Kevin Hart’s comedy brand and entertainment platform Laugh Out Loud has set their very first original hour-long solo stand-up special with Affion Crockett: Mirror II Society. The special will debut on the Lol Network streaming as well as audio channels on November 13. This expands the brand’s stand-up comedy programming which includes its Comedy in Color stand-up showcase series.

HBO’s A Black Lady Sketch Show has entered the Emmy race but the sketch category has been decimated to only three nominees.

Robin Thede’s comedy has been nominated in the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Variety Sketch Series category alongside Saturday Night Live and Drunk History.

It comes as the Emmy rule change means that categories with less than 20 submissions have a sliding scale between zero and four nominations.

While it might increase A Black Lady Sketch Show’s chances against regular winner SNL, it is a blow for shows such as Sherman’s Showcase, At Home With Amy Sedaris, Alternatino with Arturo Castro, The Iliza Shlesinger Sketch Show, Crank Yankers and Astronomy Club.

Robin Thede predicted the end of the world in her HBO sketch comedy A Black Lady Sketch Show.

One of the first sketches in the six-part series, which launched in August 2019, features Thede, Ashley Nicole Black, Quinta Brunson and Gabrielle Dennis, dealing with “The Event,” which runs through the series.

“When I brought that idea into our writers room, I had a fever dream, literally like a sweating dream in the middle of the night,” Thede tells Deadline. “I woke up, wrote it on two sides of a paper, single-spaced, in this chicken scratch, and brought it into the writers. I said, ‘This is what the interstitials are going to be. This is what we’re going to do.’ And they all just looked at me like I was insane. They were like, ‘You need more sleep.’ But, it turned out to be prophetic, in so many ways.”

The distributor announced the deal Thursday and did not give a release date. The producer is Datari Turner through his Datari Turner Productions with Qasim Basir (“Destined”) directing from his own script.

Hardwick is playing a Los Angeles club promoter on the night of the 2016 presidential election. When Scary Movie came out back in 2000, some remarked that the sleeper hit horror parody was spoofing a satire by drawing inspiration and iconography from Scream, which Wes Craven intended as a trope-riddled satire of the genre. Nevertheless, four sequels and a slew of other parody movies (mostly by 'two of the six writers', Aaron Seltzer and Jason Friedberg) followed and have served to run the art of cinematic parody into the ground over the last 15 years.
