I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, you’ll be hard pressed to find a more faithful adaptation of a property from one medium to another. Apart from the fact Penny Dreadful works incredibly well in comic book form anyway, having always been a very visual show, these issues could be happily used as the storyboards for the TV show. It obviously helps that one of the creative guiding lights of the sow, Chris King, is the writer and ‘show runner’ for this title. He does a superb job and, as a huge fan of the show, I couldn’t be more impressed with how this book has been planned and published.

This second story arc, which began last issue, has not disappointed and looks like keeping up the very impressive standard of the first arc. No treading water for this title, it’s always full speed ahead, with constant plot reveals, story developments and character introductions. As a fan of the show I wouldn’t have accepted a sub standard comic cash-in, but this exceeds even what I would have settled for. It has been, and is, the TV show in comic form.
This arc has so far seen Lucifer ascendant, Sir Malcolm dead, Ethan reunited with Lily/Brona, a resurrected Vanessa Ives who’s not quite herself, a kick ass Catriona, and a very mixed up Dorian Gray. Did I mention Victor Frankenstein, Dr Jekyll/ Lord Hyde, and Renfield are also pieces on the board too. Chris King...

Two months after the last issue, the one that finished the first story arc and directly led into this new one, we’ve had time to catch our breath a little. Usually these days we lament the lack of content in some comics, with twenty odd pages you can read in five minutes. Penny Dreadful almost had the exact opposite problem, cramming in perhaps several issues worth of story into just four. It all added to the sense of fun though, events happening at breakneck speed. If the new story arc is just half as entertaining as the last we are in for a treat.

Well that went fast. We have reached the final issue of the first story arc somehow. If I have any criticism at all, and I have enjoyed this series far too much to do more than slightly nit-pick, it is that Chris King has packed in perhaps too much too soon. He clearly has a ton of great ideas that are just spilling out, and maybe a more slow and steady approach may have paid off more down the line. But that’s a talk between Chris and his editor methinks. I’ve enjoyed it all plenty, thank you very much, just don’t run out of ideas any time soon.
A recap of what’s gone before would just take too long, so here’s the quick version. Way back in Ancient Egypt Belial was in love with Amunet,...

To copy a little American sports vernacular, this series has been hitting it out of the park with its first two issues. A perfect continuation from the three seasons we enjoyed on TV, this ‘season four’ has not missed a beat. We have seen a nice blend of reintroducing and re-establishing characters, and the development of several plot threads around the main plot. That main plot had so far given central billing to Mr. Lyle and Ethan Chandler, but the characters circle has widened as stories develop, and Catriona, Sir Malcolm, and Dr Seward are now all centre stage, not to mention a little cameo from Lily as well.
Last issue of course saw a kick ass zombie fight at the British Museum, narrow escapes, Belial ascendant, and the hint of a resurrection for Vanessa. It also saw Ethan,...

Well last issue was something of a cracker I think you’d agree. The first issue of this new series, and essentially Season 4 of the TV show, lived up to my already high expectations and then some. Chris King managed to not only retain the authentic voice of the characters, but to also retain the atmosphere and the moodiness of the show, something as integral to it as the stories themselves. This shouldn’t be a surprise I guess as Chris King was one of the actual show runners, and has as deep an affection for the characters as us fans. Comic books of course though are a different animal so the fact it has transferred so successfully across shouldn’t be underestimated.
Last issue saw us catching up with the characters six months after the death of Vanessa Ives.

Penny Dreadful was one of my favourite shows of the last few years. I’m certainly not alone in that it quickly grew into something of a cult classic. Often violent and bloody, but very stylish and superbly written and acted. It’s fair to say I was extremely disappointed when it ended after three seasons. If you are picking this book up, or are thinking of it, chances are you are a fan yourself, and missing the show just as much. If you are a newcomer to the world of Penny Dreadful, all you need to know is that it explores the horror and supernatural elements lurking under the surface in a splendidly gothic late Victorian world, and it is most definitely worth a visit.
Penny Dreadful originally followed an interesting group of characters, most of whom...

Like most Penny Dreadful fans I was really disappointed when the show’s creator, John Logan, announced the third season would be the last. Again like most, I don’t buy into his statements that he only ever planned three seasons to tell Vanessa’s story. I believe Vanessa’s story was always intended to be three seasons long, but that the show would continue on with the other characters, who clearly had story arcs still waiting to be told. Interestingly enough, this prequel sort of hints at things that should have been but never were. This issue is, of course, the fifth and final one of this prequel story, but let’s hope not of further stories set in the Penny Dreadful universe.
To briefly recap, Vanessa and Sir Malcolm now know the circumstances of Mina ‘s abduction by The Master.

Zachary Quinto, Chris W. King before passionate gay kiss in So NoTORIous Star Trek's Dr. Spock, Zachary Quinto, 34, also known for his roles in the television series Heroes and So NoTORIous, has come out "as a gay man." While discussing his eight months playing a character who abandons his AIDS-stricken boyfriend in the New York City revival of Tony Kushner's Angels in America, Quinto told the magazine: “[The role was] the most challenging thing I’ve ever done as an actor and the most rewarding.
