Born in Bolton Borough, Greater Manchester, England as Alexander Paul Weaver, he is an English actor and writer, best known for his role as the awkward closeted curate Leonard Finch in the crime drama show Grantchester (2014). He studied acting at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama before making his debut in a production of Hamlet, understudying Ben Whishaw. His first television appearance was in a 2002 episode of Brum (1991). Weaver's first movie performance was a minor uncredited role in Color Me Kubrick (2005) in 2004, followed by an appearance in The Merchant of Venice (2004), where he appeared along Al Pacino. He divides his time between theatre, television, and movies, and continues to play his most popular role - Leonard Finch on Grantchester - since 2014.
