Denise DuBarry Hay, a staunch advocate of the film industry in the Coachella Valley, died Saturday at UCLA Medical Center after battling a deadly fungus. She was 63 and her death was confirmed by her husband, Bill Hay.
DuBarry Hay began her career as an actress, apppearing in the TV series Black Sheep Squadron and CHiPs, as well as the film “Being There.”
But the business world was calling, and in 1990 she co-founded Thane International, a global direct response company, with husband, Bill Hay. The company was formed after Denise produced an infomercial in 1987 for a video, “Play the Piano Overnight.” The video became the basis for an “Overnight Music” series for Thane.
After selling Thane International, the Hays started Kaswit, Inc., an incubator for home and health products, including the book “Don Sullivan’s Secrets to Training the Perfect Dog” and training accessories.

Contrary to even our own guide to what's coming out on video-on-demand and online, rumors of the demise of those shiny discs that still take up shelf space have been greatly exaggerated. Take next week, for example, in which one will only be able to enjoy the guilty pleasure of "Lake Placid 3" or the easy charm of the Adam Scott indie comedy "Passenger Side" on DVD or upgrade to high-definition for the "Alien Quadrilogy" boxed set, a rerelease of the "Back to the Future" trilogy or better yet, Criterion editions of Stanley Kubrick's "Paths of Glory" or the Japanese curiosity "Hausu" on Blu-ray. And it's not even December yet.
Unfortunately in this time of tightened purse strings, the studios and specialty labels like Shout! Factory, Criterion and Olive Films aren't going to make this holiday season any easier on the wallet, with most digging deep into the vaults to...

Fellow Palm Springs resident, Christian Sesma, is slowly but surely realizing his dream of becoming a Hollywood filmmaker. His latest film, "Shoot the Hero" was well-received at the Palm Springs International Film Festival and is now being released by Warner Video on DVD and On-Demand.
Jason Mewes, in a rare "straight" performance, ditches his Jay persona from the "Clerks" movies, and stars as Samantha Lockwood's fiance, Nate. The couple gets entangled with a botched jewelry heist that would soon change the course of their lives.
Danny Trejo aka "Machete" also co-stars.
The film was shot 100% in Palm Springs so I tagged along with the directors to see his production locations. Take a look at this travelogue into the wild and crazy mind of Sesma.

Christian Sesma is my Bff! The Palm Springs native is slowly but surely making a name for himself as a filmmaker with an eye for quality movies. I met this talented young man during one of my appearances at my favorite radio station in the valley Mix 100.5, and I immediately warmed up to this funny but inquisitive force of nature!
So who is he? Well, according to his IMDb page:
Christian Sesma is thoroughly committed to becoming a mainstream franchise filmmaker with brand recognition; as the next generation of young, Latino filmmakers.
Sesma's biggest film to date is "Shoot the Hero" starring Jason Mewes aka Jay from "Clerks." Sesma directed his own script and he also acted as one of the film's producers. (Update: Sesma's new film, "I'm Not Like That No More" starring Paul Rodriguez is making its world premiere at the San Diego Latino Film Festival, check the...
