We’ve all made the “Cop Rock” jokes. The Steven Bochco musical drama, which premiered in fall 1990, was a big swing: marrying original music with procedural storytelling. It was a colossal flop that we still talk about three decades later, and a reminder that musicals are hard.
Music has been a part of the TV landscape going back to the 1950s and shows like “Your Hit Parade.” But few series have successfully integrated regular music performances into their storytelling: “The Monkees” and “The Partridge Family” worked in the 1960s and ’70s. “Fame” did it in the early ’80s. And then “Cop Rock” scared people off the concept.
The 1990s animation boom incorporated music in shows like “The Simpsons” and “Animaniacs.” But not until the 21st century did scripted series really figure out how to make musical numbers work as part of the narrative. “Flight of the Conchords” did it with satiric tracks,...

“Geese and goats and Schrutes and hijinks at the Bed and Breakfast” is how Rainn Wilson, the actor behind The Office‘s Dwight K. Speaking to fans on a Reddit Ama back in 2012, Wilson called the Dwight-focussed show a terrific, weird yet accessible rural family comedy. Had it been ordered to series, it would have told the story of the Dunder Mifflin paper salesman running a 1,600 acre farm and B&b with his brother and sister.

Any time a new technology is introduced into the creative space, the challenge for creators is what they might choose to do with it. So this week, the Hulu Vr app launched a new interactive 360 video experience… that might give you the opportunity to get high with Snoop Dogg.

As demonstrated by the passion of thousands of geeks, filmmakers and executives who crowded the Vrla expo in downtown Los Angles on May 4-5, virtual reality may well be emerging as the next hot storytelling technology.
To be sure, Vr’s road is still a bumpy one. Some filmmakers, including Steven Soderbergh, have expressed doubts about the tech being useful for longer narratives. By contrast, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences symbolically gave its seal of approval to the format by awarding “Carne y Arena,” created by director Alejandro González Iñárritu and cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, a special Oscar at the Governors Awards in November.
Among helmers taking virtual reality a step further are Angel Manuel Soto and Nora Kirkpatrick.

Door No. 1 is a kind of live-action multiple choice comedy adventure about a ten-year high school reunion. The show puts the viewer into the middle of the action by making her or him a protagonist of the show: Alex, one of the former students attending the reunion.
Alex doesn’t talk throughout the show, but can decide to take multiple paths through the story, and make many bad decisions along the way — it’s a high school reunion, after all.

"I'm excited to be forced to get to know you." From filmmaker Michael Mohan comes a charming short film about romance and relationships titled Pink Grapefruit, starring Wendy McColm who goes on a blind date that doesn't go as planned at first. The cast includes Nora Kirkpatrick and Matt Peters, plus Nathan Stewart-Jarrett. It's an interesting twist on the typical idea of a romance or even a blind date, and it works well as a refreshing short film that makes you think about relationships and how everything is supposed to work can be different. Watch out - it is Nsfw so wait until you're home. But it's a great short. A young married couple brings two of their single friends out to Palm Springs for a long weekend. It does not go as planned. The short premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and also played at SXSW.

Straight outta my email inbox... A short film titled "Pink Grapefruit" by from director Michael Mohan which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January of this year, and went on to win a jury award at South by Southwest in March. The story: A couple (played by Matt Peters and Nora Kirkpatrick) arrange a blind date of sorts in Palm Springs for mutual friends (Wendy McColm and Nathan Stewart Jarrett)... and, well, things happen. Director Mohan and co-screenwriter Chris Levitus' intent here was to freshen up a simple, familiar premise with a slightly disorienting end-product. Did they succeed? Sundance and SXSW certainly think so. You...

TV show description:
This comedy series revolves around Jennifer Doyle (Jaime Pressly), a former high-powered executive who has fallen from grace and hit every bump on the way down to rock bottom.
With her teenage daughter Gretchen (Dylan Gelula) in tow, Jennifer moves back in with her meddling therapist mother Maggie (Jessica Walter) and takes a job in the bar owned by her good-natured (but often submissive) brother Wayne (Ethan Suplee) and his passive aggressive wife, Stephanie (Nora Kirkpatrick).

There won't be a second season for TV Land's Jennifer Falls sitcom. The cable channel has cancelled the comedy after one season of 10 episodes.
Created by Matthew Carlson, Jennifer Falls follows single mother Jennifer Doyle (Jaime Pressly) after she loses her high-paying job. She and her daughter move in with Jennifer's mother Maggie (Jessica Walter) so that she can reassess her life. The rest of the cast includes Missi Pyle, Ethan Suplee, Nora Kirkpatrick, and Dylan Gelula.
This marks the second one-season cancellation by TV Land. Kirstie -- starring sitcom vets Kirstie Alley, Michael Richards and Rhea Perlman -- was dropped in July after a 12 episode run.
What do you think? Did you enjoy Jennifer Falls? Do you think it should have been renewed for a second season or, do you agree with the cancellation?

Jennifer Falls will not return for a second season, EW has confirmed. TV Land canceled the half-hour, single-camera comedy, starring Jaime Pressly, after its 10-episode season. The show followed Jennifer, a woman who, along with her daughter, moved back in with her mother after losing her job. Matthew Carlson (The Wonder Years) created the series, which also starred Jessica Walter, Missi Pyle, Ethan Suplee, Nora Kirkpatrick, and Dylan Gelula. Michael Hanel and Mindy Schultheis executive produced the show. The network announced it has picked up two more single-camera comedies: Impastor, starring Michael Rosenbaum, and Teachers, which Alison Brie is executive producing.

TV Land‘s gimmick of creating new sit-coms that are throwbacks to the style and general effort of those classic shows from the ’80s and ’90s is one that is proving more and more a hit-or-miss venture. What at first seemed a no-fail stroke of genius, has now put out its share of failures, and though it has led to some truly great shows, we’re learning that you can’t always spin success out of the concept.
For every Hot in Cleveland, there’s a Retired at 35. For every The Exes, we get a Happily Divorced. Not that those shows were terrible. They weren’t. They just didn’t work out, and were perhaps not as solid in their construction as the real hits. Now we have Kirstie, which I admit seemed like a good idea on paper, and that one is mostly difficult to watch. This leads us to Jennifer Falls,...

The past few years has seen rejected pilots get second chances. In 2007, CBS rejected Babylon Fields, an ahead-of-its-time zombie drama about a town where people rise from the dead and return to their old homes. Now, NBC is giving the series another try according to Deadline. I expect it will have to work to avoid seeming like a copycat of shows that came afterward like In the Flesh and Les Revenants.
It’s official. Ronan Farrow will host a show on MSNBC starting in 2014. Farrow says he wants to create a show that works as “a guide on how people can have agency in the story”. In the meantime, expect to see more of Farrow on MSNBC.
