From The Office sidekick to standup legend and a serial killer, the multitalented Stephen Merchant is impossible to pin down. He talks about cancel culture, why pubs are more interesting than outer space and hanging out with Christopher Walken
Stephen Merchant has always been obsessed by the idea of the ordinary man “thrust into extraordinary circumstance”. Since he was a kid in Bristol, the son of a plumber and a nursery nurse, those were the kinds of films he sought out and the stories he wrote, about normal people who experience something that “jolts them out of their life and gives them a way of reframing it”. He’s talking to me from his office in Nichols Canyon, LA, in a house once owned by Ellen DeGeneres, where he lives with his partner of seven years, actor Mircea Monroe. "Just – do your part, and I'll do mine..." Scream Factory has revealed an official trailer for an indie home invasion horror-thriller titled Masquerade, the latest from filmmaker Shane Dax Taylor. This seems like it should be going direct-to-dvd as there are just too many of these dull, derivative horror films these days. Masquerade follows 11-year-old Casey, who must survive the night after a group of intruders, led by Rose, break into her family's home to steal their priceless artwork. The stakes are high as the crew will stop at nothing to get what they want until a shocking twist ending. The cast features Alyvia Lind as Casey, Bella Thorne as Rose, plus Skyler Samuels, Mircea Monroe, Joana Metrass, Michael Proctor, & Austin Nichols. There's nothing to really say about this except that it looks especially unoriginal and very boring. Here's the official trailer for Shane Dax Taylor's Masquerade, direct from Scream...

The Rookie reported for duty this Tuesday night, positioning Castle‘s Nathan Fillion as the titular 40-year-old flatfoot. Did the new ABC procedural cop your attention?
Fillion stars as John Nolan, a college dropout/longtime construction worker who one year after his marriage cratered, and in the wake of bravely busting up a bank holdup, enrolls in the police academy. Nine months later, The Rookie is born and dropped on the Lapd’s doorstep, where he is met by much derision — the most damning of which comes from Sergeant Wade Grey (played by Richard T. Jones).

"My employer is not a man you want to cross." After all the support from fans, Nathan Fillion went off and decided to star in his own live-action, unofficial short film for Uncharted. Fillion has teamed up with director Allan Ungar, producing and starring in this homemade short film about Nathan Drake trying to escape unharmed. In addition to Fillion, this stars Stephen Lang as Sully, Geno Segers as Diego, Mircea Monroe as Elena, and Ernie Reyes Jr. as El Tigre. This film plays up the humor and cockiness of Drake, along with his skills of sneakiness and hand-to-hand combat. It's considerably entertaining even though it's very simply put together, which is probably why this work so well. It's all about the character. Watch below. Thanks to Twitter for the tip. From YouTube: "Nathan Fillion is Nathan Drake in this live action Uncharted short film." Based on the video...

Nathan Fillion Tweeted out his thanks to Allan Ungar for “letting us all scratch this itch” he also thanked the fans in the same post and the attachment on that tweet was for a 15-minute short film he made with Ungar titled - Uncharted.
Needless to say I about lost my mind when I saw this posting and dove right on in. For years fans of the game have been asking for a movie based on the Uncharted series and the only person we wanted to see play Nathan Drake was Nathan Fillion. Well at long last he’s done a short film written and directed by allan ungar (Gridlocked) and it is freakin fantastic. Let’s stop all this babbling and get to the film, shall we?
I was starting to think that Fillion would be too old now to play the character, but after watching this I am 100% wrong.

Nathan Fillion really did get to play video game character Nathan Drake — just not in the upcoming “Uncharted” feature film.
Fillion spent last week teasing fans on Instagram and Twitter with clues related to the popular “Uncharted” video game series, touching off some speculation that he might be taking part in the live-action adaptation game developer Naughty Dog has been working on for some time.
As it happens, the project Fillion was teasing wasn’t the “Uncharted” movie. He was teasing an 15-minute fan film that was posted on YouTube, directed by Allan Ungar, in which Fillion plays the treasure hunter Drake — something a segment of “Uncharted” and “Firefly” fans on the Internet have stumped for repeatedly for years.

Four female friends think they can spice up their book club, and maybe their love lives, by wallowing in the kinky prose of E.L. James' Fifty Shades of Grey. That's the premise of this life-after-60 comedy, and there's not a doubt in the world that it's a pleasure to bask in the company of the four lead actresses – Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen. Until, that is, you see what debuting director Bill Holderman and his cowriter Erin Simms have concocted for this quartet of greats.
- 5/17/2018
- Rollingstone.com
Besides the numerous raunchy one-liners spoken by the central quartet of aging stars for easy laughs, there’s one short passage from Fifty Shades of Grey that’s actually read onscreen. It comes courtesy of Candice Bergen’s Sharon and deals with the inexplicable decision to arouse Anastasia Steele with the “friction” of Christian Grey’s zipper. The line is a perfect barometer for whether you’re the target audience of E.L. James’ trilogy or Book Club, Bill Holderman and Erin Simms’ romantic comedy utilizing it as a catalyst for refueled libidos. You either giggle while continuing to read with baited breath and excitement, like Sharon, or squint in confusion before putting the book down forever. Being in the latter category, I’m obviously not this film’s target demographic. But I liked it anyway.
This isn’t a result I anticipated, considering the premise. Sharon’s a divorced and...

Aside from its being a shameless plug for the “50 Shades” books, there’s nary a surprise in store with “Book Club,” the kind of comfort-food movie that’s been pre-masticated by committee to the consistency of pudding (with even less flavor). Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, and Mary Steenburgen are the clan of readers whose latest selection stirs dormant libidos, albeit so vaguely that viewers needn’t fear that any actual sex surfaces in this prudishly snickering sex comedy.
Though the four leading ladies have compiled a large body of memorable screen moments between them, the appeal of familiar favorites in an even milder retread through “The First Wives Club” terrain will inevitably appeal to underserved older demographics. But really, it’s sad that the best Hollywood can come up with for so much seasoned talent is this stale shake-and-bake combining upscale-lifestyle porn with some tepid smirky humor.

Hulu publicly unveiled the trailer and a behind-the-scenes video for its new virtual reality (Vr) comedy “Door No. 1” Friday. The comedy, which was written and directed by Nora Kirkpatrick of “The Office” fame and produced by AOL’s Ryot exclusively for Hulu, is set to debut on the service on May 24.
Door No. 1 is a kind of live-action multiple choice comedy adventure about a ten-year high school reunion. The show puts the viewer into the middle of the action by making her or him a protagonist of the show: Alex, one of the former students attending the reunion.
Alex doesn’t talk throughout the show, but can decide to take multiple paths through the story, and make many bad decisions along the way — it’s a high school reunion, after all.

One could say that Michael Rosenbaum’s prayers were answered when TV Land’s Impastor came his way. For the Smallville alum not only found in the comedy perhaps “the perfect role” – as a charming, extremely non-religious con man who co-opts the identity and life of a clergyman (who he later learns is gay) — it came on a show that proved to have legs, and as such earned a Season 2 pick-up weeks ahead of this Tuesday’s finale.

Impastor‘s Buddy Dobbs isn’t your typical gambling addict-turned-gay minister of a small-town church.
As revealed in the pilot for TV Land’s newest comedy, which premiered Wednesday, Michael Rosenbaum‘s character actually assumes someone else’s identity — the real pastor falls to his death while attempting to talk Buddy off a bridge — and inadvertently becomes the spiritual hero of an upstate New York hamlet. (Also, don’t apologize for feeling weird about seeing the former Smallville star with a full head of hair. You’re not alone.)
