From its humble beginnings as a passion project made by director Michael Duignan and a group of dedicated Kiwi collaborators, The Paragon takes audiences on a quirkily delightful adventure. Working with a tiny budget of only $15,000 US dollars, the film never lets its financial limitations hold back its boundless imagination.
We’re introduced to Dutch, a grumpy ex-tennis pro nursing resentment after a hit-and-run accident destroyed his career. Seeking vengeance, he joins forces with mystical seer Lyra to learn psychic abilities and track down the elusive vehicle. But far greater forces are at work—Lyra is in a battle with her evil brother Haxan, who aims to control an all-powerful crystal. The fate of the universe hangs in the balance, whether Dutch cares to notice or not.

“New Office. New Aussie boss.”
That’s the tagline for the new Australian version of The Office, that launches Oct. 18 on Amazon Prime Video everywhere, except the U.S. The latest iteration — the thirteenth different country version of the BBC workplace sitcom created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant that incredibly first hit screens in 2001 — has garnered a lot of chatter on social media, YouTube and in the global press, not least because it is another accessible English-language adaptation that follows the beloved British and U.S. versions, but also because it is the first adaptation that features a female boss.
The set-up to the Aussie Office follows the tried and tested franchise formula: the mockumentary style, the boredom, the assortment of odd ball characters, the will-they-won’t-they office romance, and of course the overconfident, delusional boss lacking in self awareness. Australian standup comedian and actress Felicity Ward heads the cast of the Aussie Office,...

Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant’s The Office has been remade once again, this time in Australia. Here’s the trailer.
Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant’s original version of The Office launched on the BBC in 2001. It introduced the world to boss from hell David Brent (Gervais) as he attempted to look good in front of the cameras documenting his workplace, paper merchants Wernham Hogg, alongside staff including Tim (Martin Freeman) Gareth (Mackenzie Crook) and Dawn (Lucy Davis).
All while trying to stay onside with bullying best mate Chris Finch (Ralph Ineson) and, in the second series, his new boss from the Swindon branch, Neil (Patrick Baladi).
Gervais and Merchant took cringe comedy to the extreme, with Brent becoming a byword for social awkwardness and inappropriate behaviour.
Since then, there have been 13 international versions, with Greg Daniels’ American version starring Steve Carrell being far and away the most successful,...

The Office is back! Well, a version of it.
Amazon Prime Video has released the first trailer to the Australian adaptation of Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant’s enduring classic comedy series The Office, and we finally get a proper glimpse at the Aussie variants of Brent, Tim, Dawn, Gareth and more.
With NBC’s follow-up to the U.S. adaptation of The Office still in development, global fans of the franchise can sate themselves in the meantime with an Aussie attempt at the mockumentary-style comedy.
Just one (big) catch, though: The Office Australia will be available on Prime Video in 240 countries and territories worldwide from Oct. 18, except, that is, in the U.S. That’s nothing a Vpn can’t fix, however, if you’re really keen.

"You will find the paragon for me!" Doppelgänger Releasing has unveiled an official trailer for a film called The Paragon, made by New Zealand filmmaker Michael Duignan. This wacky lo-fi sci-fi thriller originally premiered at the 2023 New Zealand Film Festival last year, and is getting a theatrical debut in the US this fall. It was shot over 13 days in Auckland, New Zealand on a budget of around $15,000 in US dollars. That's a considerably tiny budget! Yet this still looks pretty damn good. The victim of a hit and run learns how to be psychic so he can find the car that hit him and take revenge on the driver. Everything converges towards the singularity in Michael Duignan's feature film debut, a "hilarious rift in space-time." Starring Benedict Wall, Florence Noble, Jessica Grace Smith, & Jonny Brugh. Reviews say it "gives its all, embracing its DIY nature to deliver a light and breezy sci-fi comedy,...

One of the year’s best examples of resourceful filmmaking, Michael Duignan’s fantasy comedy The Paragon was shot over just 13 days in Auckland, New Zealand for a budget of around $15,000 in U.S. dollars. After premiering to much acclaim at Rotterdam and Fantasia, Music Box Films’ genre label Doppelganger Releasing will now open it to kick off the fall and we’re pleased to exclusively debut the new trailer. The film will specifically open on September 6 in theaters at Alamo Drafthouse locations in NY, LA, Chicago, Denver, Austin, and more, as well as digitally.

For a film about saving the universe from cosmic evil, stakes couldn’t be lower in The Paragon. What begins as a man’s quest for revenge takes a hard left into the occult and psychedelic, but its scope never expands outside of a small-town setting and smaller-minded protagonist. If anything, the film can’t get any bigger if it wanted to; writer-director-editor-cinematographer Michael Duignan shot it in less than two weeks on a budget of $25,000 New Zealand dollars (that’s around $15K in US currency). In other words: the film couldn’t afford corners let alone cut them. But The Paragon gives its all, embracing its DIY nature to deliver a light and breezy sci-fi comedy, and what it lacks in budget it more than compensates for in low-key charm.

In 1981, as the Monty Python sketch comedy troupe approached the end of its most fertile period, Terry Gilliam and Michael Palin co-wrote the feature film Time Bandits, which Gilliam also directed. Though Monty Python’s Flying Circus and some segments of their various movies would be entertaining to kids and adults alike, Time Bandits was pitched at a younger audience and, according to an essay by Bruce Eder at Criterion.com, became “the most critically well-received children’s film in nearly two decades.”
For some Gen Xers who saw it as children, Time Bandits was a formative event: a fantasy story that didn’t hold back on physical or emotional violence, and (spoilers ahead for a 40+-year-old movie) had no compunction about giving the young protagonist’s terrible parents an unambiguously punitive ending.

Australian actor and filmmaker Charles Jazz Terrier has completed post-production on a speculative pilot for “WTFitness,” a comedy series set in Melbourne’s gym scene.
‘WTFitness’ is proposed to be a series with eight half-hour episodes that boasts an ensemble cast including Terrier, Christopher Kirby, Kat Stewart, Jonny Brugh and Trevor Jamieson.
The show was created by Terrier of Fantome Bay Pictures and was developed in conjunction with award-winning filmmaker Nicholas Potaris. Terrier aims to create a genuine Australian workplace comedy while exploring real-world diversity, social and economic issues. He likens it to “The Office” meets “Parks & Recreation.”
“In ‘WTFitness’ we saw a unique opportunity to marry the Aussie sense of humor with a series that navigates both Australian and universal social and economic issues, with the content in some cases acting as a teaching mechanism between the situation and the audience,” said Terrier. “The series has been created in...

Tagline: "Out of Time Without a Clue." Mega Time Squad is an upcoming sci-fi comedy. From the mind of Tim van Dammen (Deathgasm), Mega Time Squad is set to release this April, through Dark Sky Films. The story is a strange one, in which a time shifting robber creates copies of himself. Very greedy, this robber needs to get rid of his accomplices - all who look exactly like him. This title also stars: Jonny Brugh (What We Do in the Shadows), Hahn Milo Cawthorne (Deathgasm) and Anton Tennet. The film will be released on home entertainment formats in just a couple of weeks. Director Dammen has talked about this film. He says of the story and premise: "[its] a time travel heist comedy about a small town criminal who accidentally acquires a time travel bracelet and uses it to steal a bunch of cash from the local crime boss...he...

Thinking about watching yet another movie or TV show about vampires generally fills me with dread - thanks, Twilight - but FX's TV adaptation of Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi's What We Do in the Shadows is a rare exception.
The 2014 mockumentary is hilarious and original, following undead trio Viago (Waititi), Deacon (Jonny Brugh), and Vladislav (Jemaine Clement) as they struggle with the more mundane aspects of modern life - paying rent, following a chore wheel, and trying to engage in New Zealand's nightclub scene. Now the movie has gotten a Us makeover, and the first trailer looks just as delightfully absurd as the original.
Set in New York City this time around, the TV series will again follow three vampires who have been roommates for hundreds and hundreds of years. It stars Matt Berry, Kayvan Novak, Natasia Demetriou, Harvey Guillen, and Mark Proksch and has Clement and Waititi on board once again,...

Shelton, a small-time crook, inadvertently steals an ancient Chinese time-travelling device which doesn't simply turn back time but for a short period, allows him to work with his past-self.
Shelton comes up with the great idea to work with past versions of himself to pull off a couple of jobs but what he doesn't realize is that by coming into contact with himself in the timeline, he's tampering with time and a demonic force which is out to get him.
This is the basis of Mega Time Squad, a new sci-fi comedy from New Zealand which tore up the genre festival circuit last year.
Written and directed by relative newcomer Tim van Dammen, the movie stars Jonny Brugh (Deacon from What We Do in the Shadows) as Shelton, the less than genius crook tempting the fates.

If you’re looking for a laugh, I’ve got a couple of funny trailers here for you to watch for an upcoming sci-fi comedy from New Zealand called Mega Time Squad.

The story follows a low-level criminal from the small town of Thames in New Zealand who “steals an ancient Chinese bracelet time-travel device that helps him pull off a heist and start a new life. But he may not survive the demonic consequences of tampering with time.”

"If you meet your other self while time traveling, that's when the demon comes." Dark Sky has released an official Us trailer for a time travel indie comedy titled Mega Time Squad, made in New Zealand, finally arriving on Us shores in February. Described as The Castle meets Looper, Mega Time Squad is a "study in high-meets-low, combining elements of the sci-fi, the crime thriller and the comedy to make a comedy heist film with a time-traveling twist." This stars Anton Tennet, Jonny Brugh, Hetty Gaskell-Hahn, Arlo Gibson, Eru Wilton, Milo Cawthorne, & Simon Ward. Looks very low budget and wacky and dumb, and maybe entertaining. The mean streets of Thames, New Zealand — though “moderately impolite” appears to be about as bad as it gets — become an improbable setting for supernaturally-sparked action in “Mega Time Squad.” Tim van Dammen’s clever crime comedy pegs good guys and bad guys alike as gormless clods, a dynamic only heightened after the discovery of a time-travel device that generates clones of our none-too-bright hero. The unique mix of simultaneously droll and broad humor is very nicely delivered by a well-cast ensemble, resulting in a polished oddity that should make a splash at home, while attracting decent overseas interest.
The film represents a considerable leap from prolific music-video helmer van Dammen’s prior feature, 2013’s amusing if rough trailer-park rock musical “Romeo and Juliet: A Love Song,” and the tongue-in-cheek splashiness of its style is immediately engaging. John (Anton Tennet) is a prime punter in his town of 7,000, where long-deceased...
