Netflix has unveiled an official trailer for a French action thriller film called Ad Vitam, directed by the camera operator turned filmmaker Rodolphe Lauga. The film features a screenplay co-written by Rodolphe Lauga and French actor Guillaume Canet, telling a story about a man trying to save his wife while tangled in a bigger conspiracy. After escaping from an attempted murder, Franck Lazarev must find his wife Léo, who has been kidnapped by a mysterious group of armed men. He is caught up by his past as a former member of the French Elite Intervention Squad (Gign) and pulled into a state affair far beyond his control. Netflix presented its first international showcase yesterday with a look at what is coming down down the pike. Below is a preview of what’s on deck for feature films. Of note, was the title announcement and treatment of the Japanese movie Bullet Train Explosion. Also made a official was Troll 2, the sequel to the streamer’s most watched non-English language film from Norway. Roar Uthaug returns to the director’s chair.

Also of note, the streamer dated the Mexican movie Los Dos Hemisferios de Lucca from Marina Chenillo for Jan. 31 next year.

Not made official by the streamer was a part two to their widely watched shark movie of 102.3M viewers, Under Paris, from director Xavier Gens and starring Oscar nominated The Artist actress, Bérénice Bejo.

New York artist Madeleine Hunt-Ehrlich makes films that, as she describes it, are “concerned with the inner worlds of Black women.”

Her documentary short A Gentleman’s War explored a Caribbean team playing in a summer cricket league in Brooklyn and “the utopian world this predominantly immigrant community has constructed on their weekends,” as her website highlights. A Quality of Light examined “the under-told story of the haunted artist who also inhabits the unique political position of being Black and a woman” while applying principles of music theory and West African performance structure in its construction. And Spit on the Broom was a surrealist doc that put the history of the African American women’s group the United Order of Tents, a clandestine organization organized in the 1840s during the height of the Underground Railroad, center stage.

The Ballad of Suzanne Césaire, the feature debut from artist and filmmaker Madeleine Hunt-Ehrlich, aims to foreground its primary literary material and historical context, but instead directs more attention to its oneiric touches and environmental phenomena––the “wind in the trees,” so to speak. The title figure, together with her more widely known husband Aimé Césaire, were both at the forefront of the négritude movement, which sought to put Francophone literature by colonized peoples in greater dialogue with their African ancestry, and to depict this with a supple, surrealistic view of the world. Assembled from deep research, assistance from academic specialists, and consultations with the Césaire offspring, Hunt-Ehrlich’s bold formal schema still prevents us from fully absorbing these efforts: “feeling” does outpace our full understanding. Film at Lincoln Center has announced Currents for the 62nd New York Film Festival, taking place September 27–October 14 at Lincoln Center and in venues across the city. Production has begun in Paris, France on Netflix’s French-language action thriller Ad Vitam starring Guillaume Canet.

Filming is taking place across the capital and its suburbs, including Versailles, from April 8 to June 20.

Ad Vitam follows a man who, after narrowly escaping an attempted murder, gets caught up in his past while trying to find his kidnapped wife. Other cast include Stéphane Caillard, Nassim Lyes, Zita Hanrot and Alexis Manenti.

Canet is also a producer, along with Cabanes’ Jean Cottin, and co-wrote the film with its director Rodolphe Lauga in association with David Corona.

French actor Guillaume Canet is starring, writing and producing the new Netflix thriller Ad Vitam.

Rodolphe Lauga (It’s Complicated) is directing the action film, which has begun shooting in Paris. Netflix will release the movie worldwide next year.

Canet plays Franck Lazareff who, after surviving an attempt on his life, finds his wife has been kidnapped by a mysterious group of armed men. Trying to rescue her, Frank finds his past catching up with him. Stéphane Caillard, Nassim Lyes, Zita Hanrot and Alexis Manenti co-star.

Canet and Lauga co-wrote the script to Ad Vitam in association with David Corona and Canet is producing, together with Jean Cottin for the Cabanes shingle.

Netflix has announced the start of principal photography on action thriller Ad Vitam led by French star Guillaume Canet.

Canet co-wrote the screenplay with Rodolphe Lauga in association with David Corona. Canet also produces with Jean Cottin under their Cabanes banner.

Lauga is directing.

Canet stars as escaped murder suspect Franck Lazareff with other cast members including Stéphane Caillard, Nassim Lyes, Zita Hanrot, Alexis Manenti.

The official logline reads: “After escaping an attempted murder, Franck Lazareff must find his wife Leo, who has been kidnapped by a mysterious group of armed men. He is caught up by his past and plunged into a state affair that is beyond him.”

Filming in Paris and Versailles will run from April 8 to June 20, 2024. Ad Vitam will play exclusively on Netflix in 2015.

Zee End Is Nigh

Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd., the disappointed bride in the failed engagement between Zee and Sony India, has formally ended its quest for a merger. On Tuesday, it withdrew its application before the industry regulator National Company Law Tribunal and said that it will focus instead on internal growth. Pulling the Nclt application also makes it somewhat easier for Zee to pursue its arbitration and other legal actions against Sony.

The plan to merge the two mid-size film and TV businesses was on the table for over two years, but finally (acrimoniously) collapsed in January 2024. Sony is also seeking restitution from Zee, which it says failed to live up to the agreed merger terms. Since the wedding bells stopped ringing, Zee has also announced that it will slice its workforce by 15%.

This year’s European Shooting Star from France had dabbled in performance — “10 years of ballet, maybe six years of singing classes,” she recalls. After a knee injury made it impossible to keep dancing, she switched to acting as “a new way of expression” and started trying out for open auditions, driving with her mother the two and half hours into Paris from their home in the French countryside. Her mother sent out inquiries to French talent agencies, and one agreed to sign Bemba after she graduated high school.

Nearly two years have gone by since we heard that production had wrapped on Cuckoo, a new horror film from writer/director Tilman Singer that stars Hunter Schafer (Euphoria), Dan Stevens (The Guest), Jessica Henwick (Love and Monsters), Marton Csókás (Freelance), Greta Fernández (Santo), and Jan Bluthardt (Tatort). Now we finally know when the movie is going to be making its way out into the world: Neon has announced that they’ll be giving Cuckoo a theatrical release on May 3rd.

At one point, it was announced that Gemma Chan (Eternals), Sofia Boutella (The Mummy 2017), Zita Hanrot, Proschat Madani (Walking on Sunshine), and John Malkovich (Being John Malkovich) would be in the movie as well, but it looks like most of them had to drop out of the project before filming began.

Paris-based company Indie Sales has acquired “Happy Holidays,” the sophomore feature of Oscar-nominated Palestinian filmmaker Scandar Copti.

Copti’s feature debut, “Ajami,” co-directed by Yaron Shani, won the Camera d’Or Special Mention at the Cannes Film Festival in 2009 and was nominated for an Oscar in the international feature category.

“Happy Holidays” takes place in contemporary Israel, where a minor accident in Jerusalem triggers a chain of events. “Lies and unspoken truths will sow division among a multi-faceted patriarchal society,” reads the synopsis.

Nicolas Eschbach, Indie Sales’ CEO and co-founder, described “Happy Holidays” as a “highly-expected second feature from Palestinian director Scandar Copti after his Cannes-selected critically-acclaimed debut.”

Currently in post-production, the film is expected to be delivered in the spring. “Happy Holidays” is produced by Red Balloon Film in Germany, together with Tessalit Productions in France, Intramovies in Italy and Fresco Films in Palestine.

Ernaux won the Nobel Prize in Literature in October 2022 for her work charting the lives of women in France from the 1960s onwards, including abortion drama Happening, which formed the basis for Audrey Diwan’s 2021 Venice Golden Lion winner of the same name.

Pyramide International has boarded “Last Summer,” an erotic thriller by daring French director Catherine Breillat, which is being produced by Sbs Productions, the leading French banner behind Paul Verhoeven’s Oscar nominated “Elle.”

Exclusive: Paris-based company Indie Sales has sold Angry Annie, French director Blandine Lenoir’s latest feature, to a host of key territories ahead of the film’s world premiere at the Locarno Film Festival on Thursday.

The film has been sold to Benelux (Cinéart), Canada (Axia Films), Indonesia (Falcon Pictures), Italy (I Wonder Pictures), Israel (Lev Cinemas), South Korea (Ak Entertainment), Switzerland (Agora Films), and Taiwan (Av-Jet).

Inspired by true events, the film takes place in France in 1974. When she accidentally becomes pregnant, Annie, a working mother of two teenagers, meets with the Movement for the Liberation of Abortion and Contraception (Mlac), a group of doctors and women who perform illegal abortions in the public eye, practicing a free, safe, and respectful method. Gradually Annie will join their battle, which will bring a new meaning to her life.
