He was a soldier in the Welsh Guards regiment who fought in the
Falklands War (1982). He was severely burned when the HMS Sir Galahad
was hit by Argentine missiles. He sustained disfiguring burns to his
face and hands, and unseen psychological scars as well. He was the
subject of two moving documentaries "Simon's War" and "Simon's Peace"
which showed his long, slow recovery and his traumatic adjustment to
life after the army. He has since founded a charity "Weston Spirit"
which tackles issues of social exclusion in young people, both
able-bodied and disabled.
