Toronto -- Canadian indie producer Cineflix Productions is opening a second beachhead to aid its U.S. expansion: British studio-based entertainment programming.
After striking U.S. ratings gold with The History Channel's docuseries "American Pickers," Toronto-based Cineflix is now working to produce entertainment format series in Britain for possible migration to the American market.
The strategy, explained Cineflix CEO of programming Simon Lloyd, is making friends with industry trends.
Lloyd argued U.S. networks remain on the hunt for reality formats that produce big audience spikes and, like "Dancing With The Stars" and "American Idol," first proved themselves in the British market.
"Often the best way to get a show on a U.S. network is to hang on a British network first of all, and try to improve it there. What we're hoping to do is to have hits in Britain, and we're hoping that some of those...

I'm not quite sure what to make of Bravo's newest culinary competition series Chef Academy, which launches tonight. I'm a huge foodie and Top Chef might just be one of my life's main obsessions but I couldn't work up any appetite for the soggy and tasteless Chef Academy, which plays as a budget chain knock-off of the glossy and well-edited Top Chef. Chef Academy revolves around hotheaded French chef Jean Christophe Novelli, a Columbo-obsessed Michelin star winner who moves to Los Angeles with his pregnant fiancee to open up a West Coast outpost of his celebrated London-based Novelli Academy Cookery School. I could have perhaps gotten behind a docudrama that focuses on Novelli's efforts to get his Venice, California cooking academy off the ground but that's not the route that Chef Academy's producers go, instead transforming it into a reality competition series as Novelli selects nine students for his academy...

Bravo just announced its brand new show, "Chef Academy." The docu-series chronicles world renowed chef Jean Christophe Novelli's move to Los Angeles as he opens a test program for a top-notch culinary institute and trains and transforms nine aspiring chefs. Throughout the series, Chef Novelli presents unique dishes that only someone of his caliber could create with directives laden with a heavy French accent. According to Bravo, "the awe-struck students, many of whom are culinary novices, are wowed by the creations they see too quickly taking shape with such ease in front of their eyes. While the dishes inspire the students, tensions arise when they are asked to recreate the dishes with their very fate at...

Along with his executive chef Steve Kitchen and assistant Joel, Novelli selects nine students for his first foray in teaching French cooking in America.
Of course, the fate of the students at the Academy are at stake and they'll be assessed weekly through a variety of tests and challenges, including recreating classic French dishes in their own style.
