- John is an avid traveler and has literally been around the world, having visited South Africa, The Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, France, Brazil, Thailand, Jamaica, Mexico, The Cayman Islands, Puerto Rico, The Dominican Republic, Canada and Malaysia.
- In a ironic twist, while sitting next to producer/director Brent Owens on a 7 hour flight, John and Brent had a long conversation in which they both discovered that their fathers were actually best friends who worked together for over 25 years in Manhattan.
- Johns mother Regina Nicholson died of cancer in Jan 2009. John was chosen by his oldest sister Elizabeth to give the eulogy at his mothers funeral, which was a said to have been very touching and moving tribute to her life and his close relationship with her.

- John grew up in the same South Jamaica, Queens neighborhood as rapper 50 cents. The two lived less then a mile from each other.

The doctors had assured his parents that he would most likely not live through the night. A priest was brought in and John was baptised in the delivery room.

- Had a remarkably close relationship with his mother, and she is one of the people who encouraged him to give up his corporate career to pursue acting.
- John Lived in Atlanta for several years prior to moving to Los Angeles.
- John and his friend fellow actor/producer Nathan Grubbs met in the Eric Morris's acting class "intensive" in which they worked together for two years. Nathan then cast John for the role of "Thomas" in the movie Nathan Produced " Privateer".
- John is good friends with pioneering director Neema Barnette. While they are both from New York City, they met and became friends out in Los Angeles.
- John was a retail executive before starting his acting career.
- John met his friend and fellow actor Mark Slater in Eric Morris's acting class in Los Angeles in 2005. They hit it off upon first meeting, but didn't keep in contact. In 2011, John and Mark met again during the callbacks for "The Lookout" a film in which they both got the lead roles and played best friends in the movie.
- John came very close to being killed in a car accident in 1993, when the Volkswagen Jetta he was driving was hit head on by a car that jumped the divider on the Inter borough Parkway in Brooklyn. The car was completely totaled , but john walked away unharmed, despite not having his seat belt on.
