Whether playing Di Kate Fleming in Line of Duty or a back-against-the-wall bomb disposal expert in ITV’s Trigger Point, Vicky McClure has mastered the art of procedurals over the years.
But in Paramount+ series Insomnia from The Crown producer Left Bank, in which she plays a career woman, Emma, who experiences a breakdown when she suddenly stops being able to sleep, the actor-producer bucked the trend.
“I feel like I’ve grown up, I’m 40 now,” McClure told an Insomnia Q&a in London late last month. “There’s a lot of procedural drama that I do and I enjoy it, but I was excited to step into something that felt different.” McClure added that she quite enjoyed walking in heels for the entirety of the series, for example.
McClure’s challenge was made trickier by the fact she has never suffered from insomnia – although “just a bad night...

The long shadow of memory haunts the suspects in every season of Unforgotten, a first-rate Masterpiece cold-case mystery series. Each unearthed crime generates ripples of consequence, shattering lives as the truth comes into the light. But in Season 5, it’s the more recent accidental death of original lead detective Cassie Stuart (Nicola Walker) that has everyone spiraling — especially her former partner Sunny Khan (Sanjeev Bhaskar). Sunny’s sustained grief, revisited nine months after last season’s tragic climax, creates tension at work and on the home front, where his fiancée Sally (Michelle Bonnard) can’t help but complain, “It’s hard to feel jealous of a dead woman, but I do.” And that’s nothing compared to the chill that instantly sets in at the precinct when Cassie’s replacement is introduced: the brusque Jessica “Jessie” James (Sinéad Keenan), who makes no friends when she keeps messing up the names...

"Ray - what the bloody hell's been going on?!" Check out the first trailer for an indie drama titled Ray & Liz that just premiered at the Locarno Film Festival earlier this month. Ray & Liz is the feature directorial debut of an acclaimed photographer named Richard Billingham, a Turner Prize-nominated artist based in the UK. Justin Salinger (from Crowhurst) and Ella Smith (from Hot Property) star as a married couple in Birmingham who live on the margins of society. The indie UK cast includes Michelle Bonnard, James Eeles, Sam Gittins, and Andrew Jefferson-Tierney. Ray & Liz is based on Billingham's own memories of his parents and his childhood growing up in a Birmingham council flat. This looks extra artsy, but I really dig the offbeat cinematography. BFI's review says it's "brutal, tender and bleakly funny," calling it an "off-kilter, obliquely topical portrait of how grinding poverty begets dysfunction." Our first look below.
