The Santa Barbara Film Festival will open with the world premiere of Aaron Maurer’s documentary Invisible Valley, which profiles the stories of the disparate people that make up the Coachella Valley. It kicks off a festival that will run March 31-April 10 with a hybrid edition that includes online elements and screenings at a pair of pop-up beachside drive-in venues.
The full lineup revealed Tuesday features 47 world premieres and 37 U.S. premieres from 45 countries alongside the fest’s annual tributes featuring the likes of Bill Murray, Carey Mulligan, Sacha Baron Cohen and Amanda Seyfried which will be livestreamed online.
Every film screening will be offered for free this year, with a ticketed online component that will showcase the entire film lineup along with the tributes, industry panels and filmmaker Q&As.
The fest will close with a series of short documentaries by local filmmakers.

Eugen Jebeleanu’s debut feature “Poppy Field” has been sold to Missing Films for distribution in German-speaking territories ahead of its world premiere at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival.
The film follows the struggles of a young Romanian policeman Cristi over 24 hours as he tries to find the balance between two parts of his identity: that of a policeman working in a macho environment and that of a closeted gay person.

On 22 January, the 55th edition of the festival will open with the screening of Micha Lewinsky’s long-awaited new film One-Way to Moscow. The Swiss Panorama section of the Solothurn Film Festival’s 2020 edition (22-29 January) will play host to 22 fiction feature films and documentaries hailing from all corners of the Swiss territory. The Locarno Industry Days’ Alliance for Development wrapped its third edition today with a handful of potential co-productions catching the eye.
The initiative aims to help foster development and co-production between France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland with projects backed by European funds including France’s Cnc, Italy’s MiBACT and Germany’s Ffa.
Among the nine projects in the programme this year was Gigi Roccati’s (Babylon Sisters) Isis-themed thriller My Kin, which has been boarded in Locarno by Belgian producer Hubert Toint (Gangsters).

12 Unique Visions We Are Excited to See at the 35th Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival
Numerous sections that range from those that focus on particular geographical regions, to one that highlights features crafted by homegrown talent, another formed by stories about people who have left their hometowns to find a better life elsewhere, and even one that honors Minnesota’s Scandinavian heritage, are some of the blocks that build the extensive and boldly curated program of the 35th Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival (Mspiff).
Discerning which films to watch from the couple hundred that will play in the Midwestern city during the next two weeks is a colossal task and one that is directed by taste and interests; however, there are plenty of options for adventurous audiences looking to watch a unique cinematic vision outside of their comfort zone.
The most audacious offers include a French animated featured focused on a war-torn African country, Joel Potrykus follow-up to “Buzzard,” a subversive Lgbt drama about skaters in Mexico City, the story of a Somali man in Minneapolis who finds friendship in a lonely dog, a dark Swedish comedy that resembles the humor of celebrated Nordic masters, or a Brazilian coming-of-ager centered on a girl obsessed with the recent murders of local women. Just from the premises is easy to predict that these will not be your typical experience at the movies, but that's not to say they won't be exponentially more entertaining and eye-opening.

Here, crosswords are completed (including the mysterious entry, "garbage helicopter"), a speed-trap camera is demolished, a Holocaust museum is visited, the world’s second-biggest chair is solemnly viewed, and a gang of art thieves is encountered.

Needless to say, things do not go as planned. Schneider vs. Bax is as much about the contrast and comparison of these two men and their families, as it is the nascent yet ineffective real-world cage match.

Swiss films remain in demand for festivals at home and abroad. Two films play in international competition in Zurich – Micha Lewinsky’s A Decent Man (Nichts Passiert) and Ruxandra Zenide’s The Miracle Of Tekir – while Guadalajara festival director Ivan Trujillo is in town scouting films for a Swiss focus at the Mexican showcase in March.
Swiss titles have also been long-listed for European Film Academy awards.

The 14th edition of Berlin & Beyond (B&B), the Bay Area’s annual week-long festival of new films from Germany, Austria and Switzerland, will take place at the Castro Theater from January 15 to 21, 2009. I walked into the festival’s press conference hoping to find three particular films in the line-up—Christian Petzold’s Jerichow, Götz Spielmann’s Revanche and Uli Edel’s The Baader Meinhof Complex. I’m happy to say that two of my three wishes came true.

A record 67 countries have submitted films for consideration for best foreign-language film for the 81st Academy Awards, Academy president Sid Ganis said Friday. Nominations will be announced on Thursday, Jan. 22, and the awards will be presented on Sunday, Feb. 22.

I haven't been moved at all to do an Oscar Update because nothing has happened that warrants any kind of real attention. Either predictions are being made on films that haven't been seen or much ado is being made about nothing. However, I can't make it seem like I have abandoned "The Contenders" section so I was able to pull a Ton of little tidbits together and bring you what I believe to be a rather impressive update if I may say so myself. We can start with a few of the Oscar contenders I saw recently. I reviewed Blindness (D), Appaloosa (B), The Duchess (C-) and Miracle at St. Anna (D+). Obviously I wasn't all that impressed with three of them and those three are going to struggle for an Oscar nom outside of costume and art noms for The Duchess. As far as any topline awards go, all four are out of contention.
